View Full Version : Running Shoes - Any Suggestions?

So, I've begun running for the last couple of months for the first time in over a decade.

Unfortunately, my multi-purpose sneakers have begun falling apart from all the Ottawa road salt (not to mention years of wear!)

Does anybody have any suggestions for a solid pair of running shoes at a decent price? Any good places to go for running shoes?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yeah Realized that. Apparently you can't edit the forum in which you created a thread?

I think if you're going to run outdoors during the winter you'd need a different shoe vs running indoors/during the summer IMO. There's some good ebay stores if you know what you're looking for....

Sometimes you can find some really good deals at Winners believe it or not. Saw some top of the line ASICS going to $50.

Here's a local store if you don't want to do the Ebay thing or need some advice before you invest in your first high end shoe. Some runners believe in getting a proper shoe and paying more first time. After that, you can go for best price because you don't need the advice anymore.

First, take the wet foot test to see what type of feet you have.
You can then use that to find the type of running shoes you need.

That being said, I buy my shoes every year at boxing day at
Sportchek. I run marathons and go through a couple a year.
Running room is way over price, IMO. If you do buy from them,
make sure you get the 20% coupon in cereal boxes.

If you are serious about getting into running you should go to a specialized store where you can get someone to recommend you a running shoe based on your running style. There is a Running Room store on Slater you may want to visit. There are also other stores on Bank St if you want to shop around some more.

Don't be cheap on the proper shoes and your feet, shins and knees will thank you.

Thanks to everyone for their help. Did the wet foot test and will definitely do a little more research on specific shoes before checking out the local stores

You may want to buy your first pair of runners from one of the higher end running stores. The New Balance store at Woodroffe for example allows you to try your shoes on for 30 days as long as you wear them indoors on a treadmill.

Take advantage of this!

I got a great deal on my NB 846. They came in and such an awfully stiff heel it hurt to even go shopping in them. 50+ km later, they are broken in and usable but I don't think any running shoe should ever hurt like that.

You may like a certain brand, you may not. NB certainly didn't work for me. The trial period lets you give them a shot.

Definitely try out a couple pairs of shoes from stores like Running Room and NB where you're give an indoor trial period. Tried about 3 diff pairs of shoes before I settled on the Nike lunar trainer.

National Sports also gives you 30 days to try them out.

I would prefer a place that has a treadmill and some sort of "expert" to assess my running style and feet. Sometimes just wearing the shoes feel great in the store, but after running with it, they KILL my feet!!

The only pair of shoes that I've had no problems with (that pertain to my feet) were Nike Shox!

I'm trying out the newer New Balance brand now ... so far so good, but I think they have to be broken into :(
