Hi guys
I've been getting into marathon running lately and have heard about people using calf compression sleeves (similar to the ones basketball players use) for quicker recovery, in addition to the regular stretching, ice and rest. What are your thoughts?
Oh also what brand is good and where to find them in Canada --> I've heard of Zensah, McDavid and 2XU. Thanks!

What exactly does this sleeve do for the calves?
Does it prevent/delay cramping of the calves when running marathon distances?

You could probably get them at a Shoppers Home Health Care, or at least get them to order one for you. I don't have a calf one but I did get a thigh/hamstring one there, the company that made it was RehBand.

I'll try that if I can't find anywhere else. Thanks for the heads up!

I have some socks made by the company Zoot. They work well for recovery, and they are made as a sock that is able to be run in. So I have run marathons in them. I dont know if it made a difference as it was in an Ironman, so the marathon hurt no matter what you did.
I did find though that driving the next day was alot better with them, then the year before without them.

I was looking more for one of those compression sleeves rather than the higher socks, but I guess they provide a similar purpose?
I seem be getting calf cramps a lot during volleyball and basketball, so a friend recommended that I try this.

From what I've read people seem to be split on whether compression gear helps w/ recovery or not. Some people on slowtwitch swear by them... others don't. Some pros wear them... Some don't.
How they're suppose to be used seem to be up to debate as well. Some people wear them while running. Others say they're for recovery only so they put them on after a race and sleep in them. Companies seem to market their compression gear as "recovery tools" for post event, but of course say you can wear it during as well. They have all their bases covered.
I don't think I've seen calf sleeves really for sale. Most people seem to favour the compression socks.
I refused to pay $60 for a pair of socks that I don't know if they would work or not. I went out to Wally's and bought a pair of medical compression socks. They have only about 1/2 the compression but I figured I'd get them just to test em out.
My conclusion so far is... I don't know. I've worn them during some 10k runs and honestly couldn't tell a difference. I also wore them for a day after my 1st marathon and well, it's pain either way so I can't tell if they helped or not.
