I'm not sure what my ISP has done recently, but my ping times have improved drastically over the past few months to virtually everywhere. If you look at my post above, you will see how good it is for online gaming and not just good download speeds.

Yeah yours is wicked fast. EastLink must be this shiznit. I used to have trouble playing online games and downloading stuff, and yesterday I hosted a DotA game and was downloading BF2 patch with no problems.

ahh Battlefield 2. You are talking to the absolute worst player ever at that game!LOL A couple years ago some co-workers convinced me to buy the game and play online. I always tried to stick close to them to survive, but all the years of being a Quake 1-4 FFA player has installed a gung ho strategy in me. It does not work will with that type of game! :cheesygri

What should I be getting with sympatico high speed (I believe it's ultra high speed?)? I can pretty much get anything from sympatico for my service, so if I can upgrade it and get faster speeds I'll probably do it. Keep in mind these are my speeds running wireless on another floor of the house, using a cheap router from bell, and a $20 usb receiver from Canada Computers.

Ok yeah,

This speedtest.net site is completely unreliable.

I'm in Ottawa and it recommended I should test with Montreal.. ok fine.

Got 6900 and like 45ms ping

Tested with Hamilton and got 6400 and like 60ms ping.

And I know both those results are garbage because I have rogers 10mbit line, I figured rogers must be having crappy bandwidth right now so I loaded up usenet, and boom..... steady 1240KB/s (which translates to 9920kbps.)

So yeah, this site is garbage and unreliable...

I wouldn't trust its ping either if its that bad in guessing my bandwidth.

My typical download speed from newsgroups (PowerUsenet) is just over 11 MB/sec. I think the bottleneck is my hard drive. Newsleecher occasionally reports it's "waiting" for my drive to catch up.

My router is a 1Gb WAN router so I don't know where else I could gain speed. Any ideas anyone?

I pay $50 + taxes/month. There is no download limit.

Really tempted to move my television, internet and phone over to Bell as I can get more for my buck with them overall, but it seems like such a hassle. Plus I imagine I won't be able to get the Maxx 10 or 16 internet service in my area.

I used to be getting around 175 Mb/s a few months ago, but now after testing, these crazy numbers are coming up.

Still max'ing my DL's at 10 MB/s though.

Note, this is from Cityplace condos in downtown Toronto.

Glad I retested.... Telus is NOW supposed to be 6mbit, I'm still under 3. Time to complain!
Are you saying that they are upgrading everyone's 3mbit line to 6mbits? And how come your's is so much faster than mine =(

That is insane, I hope Shaw catches wave of this and doesnt charge 270/month for their 100MBps DOCSIS 3 internet service, although you can get that in larger regions.

Edit: Why are Shaw's speeds out west so fast? How much are you guys paying?

All Shaw tiers now include PowerBoost which gives artificially high speed test results, but the 7.5Mbit service is $33, 15Mbit is $43, and +$8.95 if you don't have any other Shaw service.

hmmm.

If you want faster service, you can always go with Shaw. Most of the Telus results from out east are from condo developments that have 100Mbit+ service, as Telus doesn't provide regular DSL service throughout most of Ontario.

What exactly is PowerBoost?

I can't believe it. Shaw's prices are 20-30% better than what we're paying here. Rogers is shafting us (not surprised).

Internet with Rogers (cable) here are $47 for 7mb and $60 for 10mb.

They have a much higher speed for a short period of time before it throttles back. The idea supposedly is that people browsing the web benefit from it all the time while those downloading large files do not.

Ouch, that pricing sucks. PowerBoost gives you a lot of speed (upto 25-30Mbit) for a few seconds at the start of a download.

Does Shaw implement caps too? If not Rogers is SUPER shafting us.

Shaw has soft caps that you'll get a warning for going over, 60GB on the 7.5Mb service and 100GB on the 15Mb service, but from what I've seen they usually don't bother with the warning unless you're way over those caps.

Just Xtreme-I but being on a very uncongested node, a 3 minute drive from the headend, excellent SNR, and doing the test at 2 AM help out as well ;).

Shaw's own line sucks to other corporations ironicly (my friend who works at IBM has a much quicker connection):

I have residential 5M profile but use a wireless Airport Express

speeds from this router to my Macbook. Also, I am using Acanac's
network browser with other staff, which is faster than using a
regular browser.

Note: during heavy traffic hours when Bell manages lines 4pm to 2am,
my speeds go down to about 4M to 5M; ditto weekends.

No kidding. Cable providers have no difficulty adding more HD channels but going over 60GB in your download quota a month is "congesting" the network .

Although I feel for you Rogers customers, I have no problem maxing out my connection on torrents (when encrypted) at 1.3MBps or going over my slightly increased bandwidth cap.

It was all dial up in the early 90s.

I started using the internet with SLIP and WinSock, on a 33.6 modem

We've come a long way.

If I could get fibre, I would do it in a heart beat
