View Full Version : [Merged] Google: This site may harm your computer?

I googled something (itchy ears) out of my Firefox 3.0.5 browser but every site (even if I google "Google") has beneath it "this site may harm your computer" and when I click the link it goes to a google page (with a google address in the address bar) saying it may not be safe and to go to the google statistic diagnostic page. What's this about? I can't view these pages unless I copy and paste the URL posted in the google notice.

Was doing some searching on Google and I see the caption "This site may harm your computer" on a lot of the results (actually every site on the first ten pages alone). I've never noticed before and I'm sure it wasn't there.
Google refers your to stopbadgeware.org for information but the site yields a "Page Load Error" which is of no use.
Post your opinions / thoughts / feedback here.

So it's not my computer!
I was just about to post this. I have a feeling google got hacked. I've been running scans for the past 20 mins.
I use Firefox as well, tried it in IE and same thing.

I was going to post the same question.
With the exception of a link leading to books.google.ca, every result for 'samba "map hidden"' has the 'this site may harm your computer' link beneath it.

It's a world wide problem.
Trying to go to the stopbadware.org site won't work because it's getting absolutely HAMMERED by half the planet trying to access it at once!

Wow I thought it was just wikipedia that got hacked and marked unclean, but it seems to be every google search results.
Would hate to be the IT guy that has to fix this or the programmer that introduced the bug/flaw.
Seems to only be happening with google.ca... Never mind happening on both.

Good job on not being evil Google, you just flagged every single website and prevented access. You've destroyed the internet! Think of what this power could do in the wrong hands? (Chinese censors) :-0:D:lol:

Googles help page gives a 502 error as well, which is where you would go through to submit feedback.
I wonder if it was some industrious hacker or an upload gone wrong? I could see them doing uploads in the early hours of Saturday morning, probably their time with the least amount of traffic.

Sad part for me was sitting there for a good minute trying to think of another search engine to use, my mind literally blanked out.

I'm usually not the one to make smart-alecky remarks but somebody's got to take the moral high ground and denounce the pr0n googling that's obviously being discussed here.

BTW there's 4 posts dedicated to google on RFD. I don't think people have been more upset about anything EVER!

when I clicked on your link there, Rehan, I got the harm warning - but when I do the search myself, I don't... Google is fixing the problem... Some of their servers are now fixed while the others still have the problem. The fix should be propagated to all of them pretty soon.
I changed my previous post to a screen capture to be more clear. :)
Edit: All fixed now.

Good job on not being evil Google. It was funny at first (all the messageboards are buzzing) but it's actually a bit scary, I realized how reliant I am upon Google. If they ever decided to change how things are setup or impose any form of censorship, you would be helpless and not even realize it.

You do know about other search engines right? No to mention that google isn't censoring you going to those sites, they're just not letting you get to them from google's links. There's nothing stopping you from typing in fuzzykitten.com or whatever.

Why it happened:
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/this-site-may-harm-your-computer-on.html
... We work with a non-profit called StopBadware.org to get our list of URLs. StopBadware carefully researches each consumer complaint to decide fairly whether that URL belongs on the list. Since each case needs to be individually researched, this list is maintained by humans, not algorithms.
We periodically receive updates to that list and received one such update to release on the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here's the human error), the URL of '/' was mistakenly checked in as a value to the file and '/' expands to all URLs. Fortunately, our on-call site reliability team found the problem quickly and reverted the file. Since we push these updates in a staggered and rolling fashion, the errors began appearing between 6:27 a.m. and 6:40 a.m. and began disappearing between 7:10 and 7:25 a.m., so the duration of the problem for any particular user was approximately 40 minutes. ...

It's better now! It was strange because I even googled "Google this site may harm your computer" and I found some stuff but dated October 2008. When I tried to view the diagnostic it would give me a server error and the Google logo looked off.
