will DDR3-1866 work well with the i7 920?

I'm building a new PC and I was going to order the motherboard/ram combo that ncix has on sale this week... it comes with 6gb of DDR3-1866

now I was watching a show on rev3 called Tekzilla and they said that you should use 1066 or 12600 ram with the 920 and 1866 if you get a 965

is there any truth to this? Will I run in to problems using 1866 with a 920?

the 1866 is just the "max" it'll run at.

If you get those, but run your core i7 920 at stock speeds, it'll run a maximum of 1600mhz (133*12)

To get it near the 1866 you'll *HAVE* to overclock the other parts of the computer.

Ie: increasing the baseclock from 133 to 155 for example will put your ram at 155*12 = 1860mhz, but this increases all the other parts too... cpu for example: will now be at 155*20 = 3.1ghz minimum

I'll leave the overclocking discussion for another thread, but your short answer it, it'll work just fine, but not at those speeds, so unless you are going to be overclocking, the 1866 is useless.

I wouldn't buy that ram normally but at $450 for the mobo + ram it's hard to say no

I mean heck 6gb of DDR3-1333 costs just shy of $200

sorry to bump an old thread but I figured I'd just ask here rather than make a new one....

so tomorrow is the last day I have to order the evga/6gb (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=36115&vpn=eVGA-X58-6GB&manufacture=Bundle%20Deals&promoid=1058) ram deal but I want to make sure I'm making the best decision

now I know I've seen in some computers that having (using DDR2 as an example) 4 1gb sticks can actually yield worse performance than 2 2gb sticks even if the 2gb sticks are even slow ram.

knowing that do you guys think it might be wiser for me to get these GSkill 3x2gb DDR3-1333 sticks?

I would purchase the Asus P6T motherboard as well(I prefer Asus over EVGA anyways) so the cost of the mobo + ram would only really be about $20 difference(may even be cheaper if they are a special purchase item on wednesday)

I bought the Gigabyte EX58-DS4 and 6x1GB Aeneon XTune from last weeks sale at NCIX. Threw it together and OC'd to 4.1GHz(on water) no problem. In the past, some MB's didn't like having all the RAM slots filled, but I havn't heard any issues with X58 so far, so go with whatever is the best deal. Just make sure the RAM is standard 1.5v. Hi performance DDR3 rated over 1.65v can't be used on i7.

I got the same bundle too! But I don't think i'm going to do such a godly OC like that though haha...not enough funds for water cooling =(
