PSU Advice

I just bought the following:

1 x Asus M3A78-CM - AM2+ AMD780V (255)
1 x AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad Core Processor AM2+ 3.0G
1 x Sapphire HD4670 - 1G GDDR3 PCIe (658)
1 x G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK PC2-8500 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-5-1

Any my 380 Antec PSU doesn't look like it is going to cut it. Do you think a good 500W PSU will do the trick?

get the tx750 from corsair. would last you atleast 2-3 build cycles

I too would recommend corsair. It's one of the best.

I have a corsair 620 i think...it's been a while since I've built my computer. But it's been working great. I remember I use to have generic ones and they pretty much blew and fried my hard drive.

The good brand ones cost more, but it's worth the money.

Those Corsairs are great PSU's, but they are all overkill for your needs.

Do you really need that much juice?
Why not get a power meter for like 20$ at CanadianTire (and return it if you want later on) to see how much power it really draws off the outlet
If it's under 370W (80% effeciency at 80% load = ~300W), why not keep it?

As I can see it..it only adds up to like.. 250W under load (figures with 1 HDD and 1 optical drive)

But if you have like 4 HDDs and 2 optical drives, then we're reaching close to 350W...

If your going to buy new I also suggest corsair, you could get one of their lower models like the corsair 520 which would be more then enough for your system and still be able to take over to the next system you build. Also the quality of these psu's are great.

A solid 400w should suffice as well. 4670 doesn't even require a 6pin pci-e power connection.

Something of 500W with a reputable brand (Enermax, Seasonic, Antec). 500W not because of the power you require, but rather the bare minimum standard/point that manufacturers start to put some decent quality control or caps in the PSU itself.

You could run that on a good 350W. If your Antec is relatively modern it should run it just fine.

A Seasonic 400-500w unit would be my suggestion.

Good OEM power supply (they make PSU for other brands and unlike other companies, thier "low-end" line up are just renamed, older generation of PSU)

You might want to replace that Antec 380W depending on the model, I've had 2 whine on me with crappy Fuhjyyu caps

I just picked up a corsair HX1000 for my build :twisted: But i plan on adding another 4850x2 next month and later this year upgrade to the i7.

Unless the ATX12V and EPS12V specifications go away suddenly... then you'd be left with a very powerful, yet obselete paperweight. Not a lot of things in the hardware world are "future-proof".
