Possible to record using Rogers Digital Box?

Well the FTA took a hit with N3 (international channels) - parents are big fan of couple shows which takes place in the morning while they work. Now I can set their PC up with a tv tuner, but before I go ahead and order the Rogers Cable (after so damn long :lol:) is it possible to record from the Rogers Digital Cable Box?

I understand it does not have PVR option (hence the TV Tuner) - is there a signal out/loop in the Digital Termial box that I can run to the PC using coaxial cable and record using the TV Tuner? Any help will be greatly appreciated :o

You should be able to go from Cable Out to the Tuner Card, but that'll only allow SD shows, which I'm sure is fine for them.

what do you mean by SD shows?

Standard Definition - ie, 480i, or what everyone has watched for the past 45 years :D

SD = Standard Definition

You also have to consider which service you're getting. If you're getting the HD service, you'll get that box shown above ^. If you're just getting the regular Digital Cable ('PersonalTV'), then you might get their crappy mini box, like I have.

Now, forgive my laziness, but I forget what the outputs are on it. You could always go Box -> Tuner -> TV though (assuming your tuner has an appropriate TV-Out)

@ _Allan_ --- Ah, cool thanks! So that picture you posted is the standard Digital Box they will give me for basic cable package? (will order one multicultural channel afterwards for the parents)

And just to confirm, audio/video line goes to TV, and coaxial cable from cable out to PC's tuner card will let me record the multicultural channel just fine? Thanks again!

Check the ROgers website, I'm sure they have pics there of the backs of the machines ... I've only had PVR / HD PVR's with Rogers in the last 3 yrs

the picture shown above is the 3250HD (DVI-out), i remember because i returned mine and grabbed a 4250HD which has an HDMI plug on it.

and yes like mentioned u can use the coax from the box to the tv tuner, but that is kinda pointless, might as well just skip the box then and go straight from a splitter to the tv tuner.

best option is use the S-video out and the rca (red/white) for audio, that is offcourse assuming ur tv tuner will accept those ( i use a hauppauge 150-MCE with sageTV). there is a huge difference between the coax and s-video

the other thing is if u want the PC to control the rogers box u will need to get an USB-UIRT (google it) and that thing will be able to change the channel on the box when nobody is around, especially helpfull if the channels ur trying to record are out of the SD range (i.e. anything over 100)

I used to run S-video and RCA audio to my Hauppauge 150 and capture the output with WinTV. I also had composite video and RCA running into my DVD recorder. Both provided good SD results.

You could change to the HD PVR and either use its built-in functionality, or use the Firewire port to save HD video to your PC. There are also $18 TV-in USB 2.0 thingys on eBay you could use for SD. Got my dad one of those.
