If you are a coach be careful if your team is winning overwhlemingly, you might get fired for hurting the other team's feelings

lol, although it is a bit of a douche bag move to keep shooting 3's in the 4th quarter when you are up by that much.... Where is the respect for your opponents..

although I like to see a good ol fashion ass whoppin' once in a while.

my understanding is that he was fired cause he thought the apology from the school was not necessary and did not agree with it.

of course, what should they do to the ppl that organized this game..apparently the opposing team had 8 of the 40 students on this team?? not the cream of the crop by any means...LOL

Also, this is the school he beat:

"Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia."

Only 20 girls in a school which specializes in teaching students with learning differences! I think he should have had some dignity. Firing may be a little harsh but I would have reprimanded him as well.

Original Thread (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=691596) and article (http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_31290.aspx)

When I play sports, I have no problem with a blowout if the other team quits (i.e. just standing around and throw the game away). But if they tried and clearly outmatched, it's a good form of sportsmanship to ease up. Killing the team that was not even close to the same level by full-court pressing until the last few minutes of the game, that's a disgrace. The coach's email after the school made its stance was even worse.

They shouldn't have fired him, they should have fired the person who matched these two teams up.

yep, 'cause the schedule maker was the one telling the team to fire 3pt shots in the 4th quarter when they were up 75-0....rriiiiiiiiiiight...

I don't think its ever right to ask you team to not play their best. But when my team looks like its going to blow out the other team I pull my best players and rotate the others so they play out of position. If that doesn't work I've spoken to the other coach and turned off the scored board and run the clock.

Like someone mentioned, they scored 12 pts in the 4th.

Also, I think it would have been more of a disgrace to the losing girls if the other team did stop trying. Why would you want someone to pity you like that? It would have looked worst if the winning team girls just stood there and let the other team go up to the basket and make their shots, AND continuing missing.

Granted, the excessive cheering and whatnot was probably not the best show of sportsmanship, but I think they were more excited in reaching 100 pts than clobbering the other team.

Don't they have some kind of mercy rule in high school basketball? You would think that the refs would have allowed the other team to forefit after the half when they were down by 59.

But the coach didn't deserve to get fired...look at the NFL and the Pats when they went 16-0
They were gunning for teams when they were up by 30+ points in the last few minutes of the 4th Q
You should get your players to play with all their ability regardless if you are losing or winning (even if it is by 100)

Or look at hockey, team Canada (I think it was the women) won a few games by like...22 goals in the past tourni for the wold women's championship (IIRC)

Unfortunately there is no mercy rule according to the article I read. The firing is extreme. A lower penalty should have been instituted.

you did not quote my whole post. I said it was a douche bag move to shoot 3's when up that much and where is the respect for your opponents.

The last line was more or less a joke.... though I do like to see a shalaking in sports once in a while.

Why were these teams matched up anyway? I know it is not the matchmakers fault what occured once they hit the hardwood but why make them even do it.

probably the only reason they stopped was cause they reached 100.

remember how rondo likes to do alley-oop plays in the last few secs when their team is winning.. it's not classy...

anyway to win like this is lame..

international competition is a bit different, especially if any tie-breaker after the round-robin is decided by goals for:against ratio....i believe Canada failed to advance to the playoffs one year cause they didn't want to score any more in one of their games.

How is that the same? You're citing professional sports to a high school basketball game. That isn't what those games are about. As a coach, you are there to provide leadership and guidance. There is a lot to be learned/taught, and embarrassing the opponent is not one of them. Do they get a bigger W in their record for winning 100-0? No. The coach deserves to get fired because you can tell he is a douche. He says something like "my players played with integrity" so he doesn't feel like an apology is appropriate. Where is the integrity in that??? There are a lot of lessons to be learned in sports especially at a young age, i.e. respect for your opponents, the game, yourself, teamwork, etc... Did the coach have a bet or something and he was trying to cover the spread? Despicable.

What if the team was full of people with 'special needs' or some sort of disability? hm....

how about that womens hockey team that beat that other team 82-0... lol I guess it is because goal differential does matter and if other teams put a whooping then it could matter.

Firing was way too extreme. and yeah i agree with a previous post that a lower penalty should have been issued. but i guess the private christian school is looking out to uphold their reputation and set an example. which I really don't agree

So scoring 3-pointers in the 4th quarter when you are up a lot of points is wrong?

Am I missing something?
