It's about $700 cheaper for the two of us to fly to HK rather than Seoul, but I'm not finding anything cheap to get to Seoul from HK. Does anyone know of cheap Asian airlines (a la Ryanair in Europe)?

Checked a few dates in September and only saw a few flights outbound that were cheap.
Seems like its very selective in dates/times.
Price to Beijing works out to $869.18 for those who don't want to check. And it's on select flights and dates.

So tempting... From Montreal, it's about $418 one way compared to the $394 for Vancouver/Toronto. Not too bad if you ask me.

YVR To Hkg works out to $1011.06 with most flights/dates available.
I don't see how these equate to 40percent off though.

Still higher than the $745 round trip tax-included for the escape pass with bonus buy, if you are going in May. (Note: Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday flight only)

I believe reading somewhere on their website that the maximum stay for the promo is 3 months. Anyone know how would AC handle the situation if I buy the ticket and decide that I want to stay longer than 3 months in HK (i.e. bought ticket for April to Jul, but decide that I want to come back in Sept instead)?

i always predicted prices would get cheaper as the year goes on but i really don't know how they would be able to survive if they sell for any cheaper...

AC would not handle this situation because AC would simply cancel your return segment.

also, the bonus international pass is not supposed to accrue Aeroplan mileage

Can anyone with experience flying to Korea comment on the price? I'm really having a hard time not pulling the trigger. My dad's convinced I can get a better deal though (may also want to spend a couple days in Singapore).

I've flown to Seoul at off-peak times (peak would be june - early september) for under $1000 from YVR (Vancouver) -> Seoul via Seattle.
But YYZ (Toronto) -> ICN (Seoul) costed around $1400 a few years ago. Sounds like $941 is a good price.
But I'd highly recommend Korean Air if you can find a flight around the same price :|
Check out http://www.toureast.com/ as I've used them before for cheap flights

with oil charge and tax, the total amount for such cold season is over $1100, which is expansive IMO. Normally, it shall be under $1000. Buy from travel agent is always cheaper.

I am looking for a flight back to Asia, that's what I observed too. Can anybody else confirm this?
and.... How are the travel agencies able to drive the price down that low while up keeping their staff and office anyways, which makes me wonder how much does the air liner make selling the ticket at their original prices...

It is probably not a fair statement to say the prices have gone up. Speak to any Chinese travel agent and he/she will tell you that your $981 all-in fare (and even this $788 fare before taxes) is a reflection that the fares have actually gone down.

I booked mines last week during some special two day sale $970 (all in). Toronto to Hong Kong in April to June. I was hesitant to fly AC for a bit cause of the problems that happened last time with the delays and no screens etc.. but now I see on the site they show a red star indicating a new plane/interior.

The new plane is great. On my flight from Shanghai->Toronto the screens were broken on the back half of the plane, but I didn't care becuse every seat has USB powered ports and almost every seat has 110V sockets.

I don't understand why they still have a "fuel surcharge" of $160? for HKG, when oil has plummeted to $45/barrel from $100+ when they put that surcharge on. Just another price hike IMHO.

From what I heard travel agencies get commission from the air lines if they sell above a certain quota # of tickets each month. They would also be more updated with the discounts and promotions. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Since 4 years ago for their HK/Toronto flights AC has been using Airbus 340's which were completely new planes at the time and already had individual screens. And since last year they switched to the even newer Boeing 777's which also have indivual screens and some power outlets for each role of seats. They are the newest planes in their fleet. :)

The surcharge used to be something like 255 when i bought in nov. They actually dropped it to 166 but yes I agree that oil has gone down since that.

ya, usually travel agencies are a lil bit cheaper when I was doing the search online it was $986.40 and when asked in-store it was $970 flat.
No man .. I hated AC last year I was on the new planes when it malfunctioned and couldn't take off at Pearson their apologies were sub par at best no compensation for money at all, only a night in a cheap hotel and free meal vouchers when pushed. Next day I got replaced with an older plane to Vancouver at which point I thought its ok only 4 hours as longas the remainder had a TV and power outlet. To my surprise nop I sat there for the remainder of the flight from Vancouver to HK 14hrs of death staring at the seat in front of me. However the return flight was awesome, the business class and economy are really comfy. I would only fly if they guaranteed me a new plane lol

Sorry to hear that. I rode on the Vancouver flight too and yeah it can't compare at all to the Toronto one, because the flights are shorter and the older sucky planes were able to handle them. I don't know if they replaced them in the last 10 years.
They have to use the new planes for the direct flights from HKG to Toronto because it's a 16 hour super long haul flight that only the newer planes more fuel efficient planes can handle.
Of course the worst is the UA flights from Chicago to HK where they stuck you into an 20 years old crowded 747.

I believe the fuel surcharge is a result of AirCanada making a major error in their advance purchase of jet fuel. I read that they pre-purchased jet fuel for 2008 and most of 2009 at the price-points prior to the mega drop in oil costs... I bet they thought they were smart, likely getting a discount of $5 per barrel volume or something, and then cringed when they saw the price of a barrel drop by 30%+! Someone in their purchasing dept should get fired!

I booked my flight from YVR to HKG in Nov and they've already changed my itinerary twice! The biggest one is instead of coming home on a sunday, they bumped the flight to the monday (i have to work on monday!)
I called them and they said they are only taking calls regarding east coast delays currently and said I should call back later.
any advice?

In my experience, AC is usually very accomodating when it comes to schedule changes (which seems to be what yours is). The options which will be offered to you will likely be a full refund of your ticket or re-booking you to something to your satisfaction.
Just call back later... your flight is not till Nov!

I bought my ticket from YYZ to HK for Nov. 28 and returning Jan 5. I bought my ticket through Tour East, a Chinese travel agency and it came up to $925 after taxes and fuel surcharge. This is actually like $20 cheaper than if I were to book from AC's site directly... Hey extra discount I don't mind it at all! :cheesygri
