The deal isn't as good as before but it's not bad, especially if you missed out on the outlet sale in December.

Go to the EPP site (http://www.lenovo.com/ibmeppsales/ca), use FNDEPP and apply coupon code CAEJANUARYSALE to get one for $808.

Is it just me or is that a really expensive price tag for what looks like a bottom of the line laptop spec-wise?

These are small thin laptops. I suppose that you could compare it to something like a MacBook Air. You're paying for the small size. I believe that they weigh under 3lbs as well.

Nyuh-uh! THIS is the hot deal with 3 year warranty!

Lenovo X61s - BT, Vista Business, 3 y. war. $715 (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=675152&highlight=thinkpad)

When I do a build with a 3 year warranty and Bluetooth, it's ~$1215. For $715 ($500 less!), I'd buy it even though I don't really need it (RFD compulsion!) but for $1215, I don't think I'd buy it even if I needed it: I'd wait for a better deal.

That's the one I was alluding to. I got the last one of those and wouldn't sell it for 50% more than I paid.

When I do a build with a 3 year warranty and Bluetooth, it's ~$1215... I don't think I'd buy it even if I needed it: I'd wait for a better deal. You can do BT with a $3 dongle from DX et al. The warranty is a good idea if you're concerned about mobo or LCD failure but most other problems like HD and RAM failures are inexpensive to replace yourself. (Even mobo and LCD replacements can be done cheaply if you buy the parts on eBay and have minimal mechanical skills.)

The problem with waiting for a better deal is that X61s are being discontinued so you may not get even this good a deal if you wait too long. (Then again Lenovo could have a big blowout sale in a month or two to clear remaining inventory.)

P.S. If you're near the border or have an Amerifriend, you may be able to get a better deal from Lenovo US (http://stores.channeladvisor.com/LenovoOutlet/Notebook/New/ThinkPad%20X%20Series/).

Jan 26th, 2009, 11:14 AM
Bases on other responses in varies threads, because Lenovo uses excellent quality parts so it's built to last and of course, the X61 is 12" screen and a merely 2.6lbs. As screen gets smaller, price increases. (this doesn't not count for the measly 10" netbooks)

How is this a good deal with a mere 80 GB HDD and 1 GB RAM?

This is a "good" deal if you compare it to the previous regular prices where the similar config was 1000+. But keep in mind, this exact model was $550 during the december blowout sale....

If you want to compare the specs, you can get a much better desktop system for cheaper... But that's not the point when you're looking at a 12" sub-compact notebook....

I got one of these during the december sale for my wife. If you add a $20 2 gig stick of ram (3 gigs total), the laptop actually runs pretty smoothly. If you're not going to game on the thing, this laptop is great...

oh, and the OP should fix the link to point to the FNDEPP portal instead of the IBMEPP portal...

Buyer beware on these. I too ordered an X61t during the Christmas sale (07.12.2008) and have yet to receive it. In fact I can't even get a reply from Lenovo with an updated status for my order. (Emailed them last week, no reply yet) Definitely will be the last Lenovo I purchase directly from Lenovo.

That article is b*llsh*t. There's no comparison between a $200 or $300 netbook and an X61s. The keyboard is full-sized and has far better feel. The screen is far bigger and better. The TrackPoint is far easier to use on such a small device compared to a touch pad. Instead of an Atom processor you get a standard Pentium dual core CPU. Max RAM is 4GB. You can run more than just a stripped down version of WinXP, including 64-bit operating systems. The build quality and support are also far better than most netbooks. The X61s compares favourably with full-sized notebooks.

You get what you pay for. If you want a toy then go get a $200 netbook.

Well said, and it seems they decided to continue manufacturing these to meet the demand from the customers that never got theirs from many weeks ago.

So I have a feeling there will probably be another clearance sale, probably best to wait for that ;).

p.s. I have one of these guys from the first sale, they're awesome.

Bear in mind all the people still waiting from orders last time ordered the tablet - I think most people who ordered a x61s got theres - the hold up is on the tablets - it does not look like they are offering those again in fact.

On the netbook argument - find me a netbook with a magnesium alloy casing and shock detecting harddrive plus a CPU that handles Vista properly for $500 and I will agree with you.

If anyone gets an x61 make sure you take off all the bloatware including that Office trialware and then defrag the HD - the unit I received had a HD badly in need of defrag - it runs like a dream since I cleaned it up but it was a dog when it first arrived.

Btw - they updated the outlet listing over the weekend - not many cheap x61s and T61s listed there so I am not so sure we are up for another big offer unless they have a serious surplus lot of L7500s or MBs for these things.

My understanding from speaking with Lenovo people at the time was that the X61s for $715 had been ordered fully-loaded with BT, fingerprint reader, Vista Business, 3-yr warranty, etc. by a customer who then cancelled. That was a one-time opportunity for those of us who got lucky.

Speaking of their outlet offerings, have a look at their monitors. They have a bunch of 17" ($110) and 19" ($150) 1280x1024 4:3 monitors. These would work fine as external monitors for the X61s.

If we are going to get another hot deal my prediction would be the X300 - it is replaced by the X301 and they are currently clearing it out in some countries - plus we saw a bit of a preview the other day with an RFD coupon. The config options are already limited the same way the x61s ended up. Have a nasty feeling it wont come cheap even with a big discount - that SSD pushes the parts cost up regardless of other trade offs on pricing.

I bought the X61s with the 4 cell battery during the last sale - it lasts less than 2 hours on my settings (I use the default, but set my display to max brightness).
With the 8 cell battery, it lasts just over twice as long, but weighs a lot more (3.3 pounds vs 2.7 pounds). There's 10% off accessories with the coupon code, so the battery is $143.28.

I suggest you give them a call immediately. I ordered a t400 from them several months ago and found they have horrible e-mail and status updates. When I called them, they updated me with the status of my laptop and the status of my order. They also mentioned that for some reason my credit card didn't go through and that they will do everything they can to solve the problem. Something about contacting their colleague in the financial department. About 4 hours later, they called me back and told me everything has been cleared and my laptop was cleared for shipment and they updated me with a tracking code.

So in the end... I suspect if I didn't call them, I would never have gotten my laptop. Even to this day, I don't know what the problem was.

After this price update I'm really considering this deal.

I have a laptop that may get another year, may die.. now? I'm just not sure. Would it be advisable to just get the x61s and use my current laptop as like a home pc (on it's battery it lasts ~90 mins). Or will these things keep dropping, and I should just wait?

Tech prices always drop.... don't buy until you absolutely need it or the price is too good to give up. keep in mind the x61 is *last* generation. if you're getting a computer for the future, get the current generation x200 which is much better and faster.

I'm personally waiting for the dollar to equalize again... That has the best impact on prices... =)

Strangely, they've raised the prices of the X200. The base prices of the X200 & elite X200 go up by ~$40 & $60, respectively. Also, last week they were offering free 2GB Intel Turbo Memory upgrade.

I was going to pull the trigger, but now not only have they removed the free upgrade, they've also increased the prices. Good for my saving account, I guess.

Heads up to anyone else who, like me, were still waiting for their order from Christmas sale. Finally got a reply from Lenovo.

Thank you for contacting Lenovo, the makers of ThinkPad and ThinkCentre products.

This product is severely backordered. At the time, the sale was limited quantities. We had the option to cancel this order per our terms and conditions, however we chose to honour your order. It will be at least another 2-3 weeks for delivery. If you would prefer, we can cancel this order.

Should you have any other questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us again, or should you prefer to speak to a ThinkPC Sales Specialist, please dial 1-866-42-THINK (866-428-4465) Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 6:00pm EST. A representative would be pleased to assist you.

Thank you for choosing Lenovo, we appreciate your business.

Not the answer I was looking for. An indication that it was delayed when I first made the order might have been nice. Pretty sure I am canceling this and never dealing with Lenovo again. :(

The only store that carries thinkpads that I have seen so far was the one on south-west corner of College & Spadina. It's on college, the second store. They mostly carry macs and thinkpads, also some laptop bags, etc. They have several thinkpad models on display. Not sure about the prices though.

I just noticed this thread and had to give my opinion on this laptop...

I have a Lenovo X61 tablet that was purchased as part of my program of study. My entire class (all 150 of us) have the same laptop. This thing is the biggest POS I have ever used. They have problems of all kinds (speaking of hardware, but also a couple driver issues with the thinkcenter suite of software which you can't remove to my knowledge). Anyway, my advice would be to stay away from these computers. I've since started to move towards mac, although I still have to use the X61 for school.

Current repairs done: broken bezel (replaced), faulty MB fan (MB, Fan, CPU, and memory replaced), broken latch (replaced), broken latch again (not bothering to replace it again). A lot of people in my class have been having problems with the hard drive too (we have 120Gb drives although I'm sure the manufacturer is the same).

If the problem was isolated to my computer, then I'd say I have a lemon. But I see way too many problems with these computers from everyone who has one. The tech department in my school has moved to Dell tablets for the new class, and supposedly they're also riddled with problems (although to a lesser extent).

This thread is about the x61s - the non-tablet version. There may be a lot of folks on the thread in expired deals that are still waiting to receive their tablet from December that may be pretty upset to hear this.

Btw - laptops in use at universities and colleges get some of the toughest treatment out there - look at Lenovo's site they indicate a huge proportion of their problems come from these sites. It's just the nature of the environment - they get throw into and carried around in rucksacks from class to class. Compared to a corporate environment its the hardest wear and tear you can get - add the fact that tablets are by design more delicate and you have a recipe for trouble - I am not defending Lenovo - you should not see the failure rates you are getting but I am surprised the IT dept did not just move to regular laptops from tablets.

I am glad to see that Lenovo has lost alot of credibility and gained a quasi-permanent record by their many schemes and tricks on RFDers. For a modern computer company, they aren't very savvy.

Lenovo = Fail.

I know you're reading this, middle management.

I just noticed this thread and had to give my opinion on this laptop...

I have a Lenovo X61 tablet that was purchased as part of my program of study. My entire class (all 150 of us) have the same laptop. This thing is the biggest POS I have ever used. They have problems of all kinds (speaking or hardware, but also a couple driver issues with the thinkcenter suite of software which you can't remove to my knowledge). Anyway, my advice would be to stay away from these computers. I've since started to move towards mac, although I still have to use the X61 for school.

My friend and I bought the exact same X61t online in Dec. 2007. Both of them have not have had any issues, and we're both university students. When Lenovo called to tell us the warranty is about to expire and the option to upgrade it is still available, we both didn't bother since they have been working problem-free. The only problem I had was the right-click button on the stylus broke, and Lenovo shipped a new one to me right away without asking for the old one back.

The Thinkcentre software CAN be removed. Restore the system using a custom restore, and uncheck all of the ThinkVantage stuff that you don't need. You can also uncheck other crapware and the trial versions of programs they include.

The only store that carries thinkpads that I have seen so far was the one on south-west corner of College & Spadina. It's on college, the second store. They mostly carry macs and thinkpads, also some laptop bags, etc. They have several thinkpad models on display. Not sure about the prices though.

Hope that helps. :cheesygri

Uh, if you want to buy an X61 from Computer Systems Centre (the store mentioned above), bend over as you enter the store . . .

Can you suggest alternatives with similar or lighter weight (~3lbs) and screen size/resolution that are cheaper? Thanks

ThinkVantage software can conflict with drivers for some peripherals (i.e. half of the function buttons on my laptop stopped working after I installed a logitech mouse), that's the only reason why I tried to take it off (and failed).

Anyway, I'm glad that some people are having good luck with their Lenovos. As for me, if I had the $3000 I dropped on this POS laptop, I would buy that Dell Netbook for $299, drop a 32Gb SSD in there, and install Mac OSX. Lighter than the X61, and quicker too (because really, nothing can be slower than this machine).

I ordered X61 on Dec. 06.
It was shipped yesterday Feb. 09.
I lost faith in this Tablet after reading a lot of negative stuff and I am even considering selling it right away and buying a refub Macbook Air for $1099.
I need something super light and portable.
But hey it's a tablet and this is why I bought it. Let's see.
Could be a keeper.

I am currently using the older x60 tablet version, and all I can say is that unless x61 took a major nosedive, there is nothing horribly wrong about the laptop, and totally bests any netbook except perhaps those new ASUS with the Nvidia 9300M in graphic intensive tasks. This is not to mention that tablet pcs and netbooks are not comparable things. I bought mine a year ago for $1380 (includes tax) - a good price considering it had a 7200rpm 100gb drive, 2gb ram, bluetooth, 8 cell battery, and 1400 x 1050 screen. $3000 is way overpriced considering the major sale a while back!

Things I would like to point out:
1) If the latch breaks, don't bother replacing it as it costs more than a hundred dollars (not covered by warranty) and will break again. I'm using a partly broken latch. I am thinking of making my own solution using the stuff you use instead of laces on shoes... I can't remember the name :o

2) Thinkvantage software is awful as it consumes an enormous amount of system resources. I erased it, and didn't even bother making a recovery CD. I downloaded XP tablet OEM edition and just used my legitimate code on that.

3) The Fn and Ctrl keys are switched, but once you get used to it it's actually better. That being said, they keyboard is both waterproof and indestructible. Believe me I've tried! :cheesygrin

4) You don't need the dock or an expensive external cd drive. I just bought a $22 internal drive and bought an IDE to USB connector on ebay for $7. Never malfunctions...

It's definitely not a comprehensive machine, but if you get used to its quirks it works quite well. If you're in the liberal arts, the tablet isn't very useful except when marking onenote/pdf documents. So... the lighter x61s thus should be a decent laptop.

I agree, it is overpriced. It wasn't by choice that I payed $3K. I got it back in September 2007, when they could be had for ~$1500 through visa perks. Unfortunately, I had to buy it from my faculty that bought a bunch of software licenses, and a $200 Lenovo external DVD writer. We did, however, get a free 1Gb USB key. Anyway... I try not to think about how badly they ripped us off.

Stupid ass UPS Standard shipping. It's going to take longer to get from Mississauga, ON to Vancouver, BC than it did from China to Canada.

agree... also repairs for thinkpads from these guys are only as good as the warranty you have... without warranty, they'll charge a minimum of $100 just to open the lid of your thinkpad laptop without even fixing it. They're a rip off unless lenovo pays for their time imo.

Anyone got their x61s (non table) from Lenovo recently? I wonder if the shipping slowdown is still happening. I'd like to know how long it actually took them to arrive -- from ordering to delivery..
