I know this deal has been around for a while but it is STILL a smoking deal. I found this one in the clearance bin. I realize that I will have to change the firmware (Vonage). [ any hints feel free to PM me ]

hook this up to //www.peopleline.net for the cheapest VOIP in GVR at $100/year.

Are all locations offering that price now? Last I checked it was around $50. Isn't even on the Staples website anymore. YMMV?

Those in the GTA (or those looking for 416, 647 and 905 area codes) can try http://www.vbuzzer.com/ ($50/year for unlimited local incoming and outgoing).

Just setup my VOIP number, looked at peopleline as looked professional, but their rates were significantly more than Acanac for VOIP. Anyone love/hate peopleline or Acanac for Voip? Still in trial with Acanac and not sure on call quality yet.

I use , I used vbuzzer, although it was O.K. I havn't found anything that touches voip.ws for call quality yet, not vonage, not any other other ones, plus you can pay extra for premium routes, or get the discounted version.

I use freephoneline.ca - no monthly cost - works great with the unlocked Linksys.

Dito... you can't beat the price... It's coming up to a year since I've been using my PAP2 with their service.

Yes, you need to order your own config file. I think it is around $50.

Only issue with voip.ms was that they had no features. Basically not a replacement for home phone. Only voicemail and CallerID I think. It would be nice to switch to a service where you know how much it will cost you every month.

I hated acanac voip.

been a paying customer for 15 months, sending emails every 2 weeks and my issue never got fixed.

Basically, I would hear the other party perfectly, but they would hear me very badl (stuttering) on about 10% of the calls. On another 10%, they would eventually stop hearing me.

I ended up switching to unlimitel.ca and I love it. 2.50$/month + 1.1 cents a minute, crystal clear quality. I even got myself a toll free number (2.50$ / month, 4 cents a minute on incoming calls) :o)
Might be because they are located in Ottawa (and so am I).

Acanac DSL is fine for me though.

I agree with the problems on Acanac. I was on it for a few months and the quality for me was consistently worse than vbuzzer. I would get an annoying echo or background sound (not all calls, just some calls) and I tried different settings to no avail. I basically stuck with vbuzzer due to better quality - I pay a premium, but at least I've never had any problems and it allows me to simultaneously ring my cell phone on incoming ^^.

Be careful of picking up the "only one left" on clearance sale. Sometimes, if the package has been returned, it might mean whoever bought it before you, tried to unlock the device, but failed to unlock it due to not understanding some instructions, and then tried to return it to the store. Hope you manage to unlock it. I've noticed some in the store close to me, but they were opened (not wrapped) and inside the box, it was also opened or unwrapped. I did not buy them as it was opened before.

I have never had any problems with ACANAC, a lot of the time I have had better quality calls on my ACANAC line then my primus line. Both of them on the same Shaw connection.

You need to pay by minutes!! not good, 1.1 cents for local calls? forget about it, how much you pay every month???

Only issue with voip.ms was that they had no features. Basically not a replacement for home phone.

Am slowly setting up with voip.ms, good quality and they have been adding features on a regular basis to the point of being somewhat feature rich now. LNP in and out, ring groups, multilingual voice mail + indicator + sent via email and call hunting were features I was looking for, and they have them.

You need to pay by minutes!! not good, 1.1 cents for local calls?

And unless you spend about 1 hour daily on your personal phone (or mobile via callback) I find those "unlimited" 10-15$/month calling plans less interesting. Assuming 1.1 cents with either voip.ms or unlimitel.ca I can talk for over 22 hours a month for 15$, DID cost notwithstanding, and all prepaid so no expensive surprises. Realistically, I spend much less time and money than that. IMHO VOIP monthly rates targeted at home users are mostly for the peace of mind of current telco customers looking to save a few bucks and the minority who use their home phone a lot. And many "unlimited" services restrict you somewhat: limited number of minutes a month, maximum number of dialed numbers, few/no concurrent channels, only 1 or 2 peers, etc. I tend to prefer the pay-what-you-use models for their sheer flexibility. Ah, if only there were such a thing with Internet access: pay per gigabyte, no speed limit, no monthly fees. *sigh!*

Back to original topic: 10$ for that ATA looks good. Good find OP!

It works with any SIP/IAX VOIP provider (Acanac is one of them).

I signed up with voip.ms and they emailed me asking to fax in my ID lol (they have this manual authorization thing before you even purchase something)

unlimitel.ca is good but charges $4 for voicemail and $5 for call forwarding.

Saw a couple of these in the bin one time I was there, but didn't bother since I don't really make any LD calls, and the free 500 mins /month LD within Canada on my cell phone never even gets used either so I passed on it. Wouldn't mind maybe considering something like this to replace my bell land line...Only thing that I wondered about is how they would let me use my non bell dsl without having basic home phone with bell. If I was to cancel my home phone wouldn't my dsl get cut off since it is not with bell?

Yes, you need to order your own config file. I think it is around $50.

Do you have to buy a config file from them? I setup my vbuzzer using info found in forums for my PAP2.

Thanks for the recommendation on voip.ms.. their rates to the NWT/Yukon ($0.015 / min) are *way* better than vbuzzer ($0.16 /min). I'm switching.

That is exactly what I said. You need to order (i.e. buy) a config file from them and pay $50 ish for it. (I am referirng to freephoneline.ca to make this clear for anyone else reading this conversation. Otherwise you are stuck with using the softphone)

The config info is personalized and they need to activate the ATA access on there end. No way around it. If you want to use it with an ATA you have to buy the config.

As for this deal, it is a great deal but likely sold out at most places.

hmmm, I am thinking about getting VOIP.ms as a second line (fax) on my SPA-1001, will use DRPD to route to fax. Anyone have fax working with VOIP.ms? Usually you need special fax-friendly packeting protocols for fax to work nicely on VOIP.

I have Acanac as my ISP and I am subscribed to their VOIP service, as I mentioned in the other thread on the topic. Been on the VOIP for a year.

With a good connection, both my ATA and softphones operate well enough that no one can tell whether I'm on hardline or on a VOIP line.

The freephoneline service uses a lower rate interface to the phone network and is somewat muffled by comparison. My understanding was that freephonelnie charges a one time fee if you want to use an ATA - was it $50? Or was it $100? That would be plus taxes.

Acanac was $9.99 tax included - slilghtly less than $120 a year including taxes, with unlimited North American calling . . . freephoneline and their sister companies only support free urban local calling to major Canadian urban centres.

I run my own PBX at home. I picked up some vonage pap2 devices on clearance from thesource and unlocked them to connect to my trixbox. I sent a couple to family around the country so we can dial each other with 3 digits for free, and restricted their calling to 4 digits or less so they can't dial out on my normal trunks.

For POTS connectivity, I bought a DID and termination through les.net and I am very happy with the service. 3.50/month for the DID (phone number), 1.1c/min for local and incoming calls and 1.5c/min for long distance calls.

Originally I was paying 45+ to rogers for Voip and it never rang when people called, just went to voicemail. I couldn't put their phone box behind my router without a lot of extra effort. Now I can take my pap2 anywhere with a net connect, it will tunnel back to my server at home and give me my phone extension. So far, I believe my average phone bill is about 8$ a month, with way more features, including mp3 copies of voicemail emailed to me, and a backdoor IVR when calling from my cellphone that I can have the system call me back and give me a dialtone (way cheaper to call LD!)

Cheers!

- Tim

wow Tim, you seem to be very educated in this VOIP thing :) I'm just getting started and signed up with VBuzzer In/Out for $50/year. Good so far.

FYI. There are two of these devices sitting in the clearance bins at Staples - Richmond Hill - Elgin Mills & 404 location.

They were ringing through at $49.97, but maybe a PM would work with scan of receipt from other Staples store?

Here's mine. It was $9.97 - 25% (there's a $0.97 item on there too).

This is the gray adapter. I also fond a black one bonded to vonage in clearance that scanned at $49.97, not sure it was a linksys though.
