Is contrast ratio really that meaningful?

Basically, it's the range between brightest to darkest. So if we have two monitors, both with crappy grey blacks at the darkest level and one monitor has a super bright backlight while the other monitor only has an average bright backlight, the first monitor will have a higher contrast ratio, but still the same crappy picture...

the higher contrast ratio one worse maybe because you have to crank up the LCD to block out more backlight so that it is comfortable to view.

I wish this monitor had 1x VGA 1x DVI and 1x HDMI. I really don't need 2x HDMI and would prefer to have a DVI.

But you would hook your monitor up to your pc via the VGA and the 360 to one of the hdmi slots. Could even hook up say an HD receiver if u wanted to.

Isn't DVI = HDMI for the video signals? Just get an HDMI-DVI converter or cable.

I also have the Dell 2309 and I just bought the p244w today from staples. The P244w is amazing, I love it. It has identical PQ if not slightly better than the dell and it's got 2 hdmi inputs and its 24 inches baby!

I'd say get the p244w.

Although, the other acer that's on sale has a larger resolution. 1920x1200, but doesn't have any HDMI inputs... but i guess it depends on whether or not you actually need the HDMI inputs.

I'm thinking of exchanging my p224 for the other one as I don't think ill ever use the HDMI inputs to be honest.

the Acer X243WBD has tilt height adust the 244w does not the Acer X243WBD has better blacks and color it has a higher res the only thing that it is not better is the response time but you wont notice anything from 5ms to 2ms

1st) the spec from Staples is rubbish, for example the Dell 5ms respond time is TYPICAL, while the 2ms from the Acer is GTG, also the contrast on the Acer is only 1000:1 (not 2000:1)

2nd)

To answer your previous question. You can buy the monitor with a coupon code. So the final price will only be $229 + tax which is crazy.

The resolution doesn't make to big of a difference. But also remember that the x243 is a bigger monitor.

You're talking able dynamic contrast ratio, which indeed is a laughable piece of specs that companies use for marketing. However, static contrast ratio is one very important factor to determine the quality of the monitor, no matter for normal consumers or professionals. It's the ratio measured without changing the brightness of backlight. 1000:1 is already a good static contrast ratio, which almost no TN panel can reach.

Nobody turns on the dynamic contrast ratio option on their monitor, for it will make the graphics look dim and lifeless.

Hey guys,

I'm gonna purchase this at BB and price match. (p244w bii) which by the way is awesome. I went to my buddies house yesterday to look at it... It's absolutely good enough, actually awesome for video games. 2ms is really wicked. On top of that... it's actually 20,000:1 Contrast Ratio...not 2000:1... Blu-ray movies off the ps3 look ridiciously good. Highly recommend this product.

Just curious can I use my buddies receipt from Staples to price match it at BB?
it's 379.99 at Bestbuy so the price difference is huge and I'll end up saving even more because they take off another 10% off the difference hehe.

Thanks. Picked one up after work at the Markham location. I called first to confirm if they had stock, and they said they had 5, and I bought one of them. This is for 243. Accepted the $20 off coupon as well. Did not ask about stock for the 244.

Price is showing up at 261.95 for me in vancouver???
But I used the coupon and got 20 dollars off. Is this happening
To anyone else?

Staples usually adds the $12 recycle fee on the list price. I just bought one online delivers to Vancouver. Good luck hunting.

Oh. The $20 online coupon helped out my decision too.

with P224W you have 1" wider and 2 HDMI

with Dell S2309W you have:

Samsung panel (LTM230HT01) vs lol AU Optronics lol (M240HW01 V0), generally Samsung > *

$80 cheaper
smaller pitch - 0.266mm vs 0.276mm

so imho the Dell is still better

You don't really need a DVI input. You can get a DVI to HDMI adaptor.

I would also like to know the difference between the two monitors. I was actually debating if I should get the x243 over the P224. Mainly because the x243 has the higher resolution.

Yes I know I can get a DVI to HDMI adapter, it just would've been nice to have 1 VGA, 1 DVI and 1 HDMI. I hooked it up and looks good, doesn't appear to have any dead pixels. Its just going to be a general purpose monitor for the wife for web browsing, homework etc. No gaming so she should be ok with it. I think I'll end up just getting the adapter and keep the P224W.

For general use I think the x243 might be better. It's 1920x1200 and 0.6" taller in height. The p224 is mostly for gaming/movie viewing.

my comparison but others may disagree:
- pic quality on acer seems better
- acer gives off more heat. i think it has higher power consumption
- extra 150 pixel on the vertical is real nice (this is why i bought it)
- when booting up with black screen u can notice bleeding on the edges. i guess only when screen is completely black will you notice this.
- the stand it came with is just as bad as the dell. but i plan on replacing it with a better stand anyway

There are 2 ways. You can buy an HD/AV cable that costs $59.99 and has an HDMI hookup. Or you can buy a VGA / AV cable for $39.99 and that hooks up to the vga port on the monitor.

But then you will need a dvi to hdmi adaptor so you can use your computer and the 360.

I have my 360 hooked up to it and it looks really nice.

I currently use a 22" HP w2207 with the 360 and comp but want to upgrade, I may wait till next year though. It looks good with this monitor already I just want a bigger screen. I had to read a lot of review about those two Acer monitors.

p244w seems to aim gaming and movies, but almost all review destroy it's raw image quality and color precision. 1080p resolution is also something i admire from this monitor.

X243 has a lot of complain about it's stand. Medium image quality. Great brightness.

My decision were made once there, at Staples. The p244w didnt have DVI and my video card doesnt have HDMI. Since i was there for a deal, buying a 20$ adapter wasnt logical for me. Well... the true reason is I've been dreaming for a 24" monitor all day long, and like a kid, i wanted it Right Now!
Result : X243 for 282$ including taxes.

So, tested it all evening. My first thought. It's big. Had a 22" Acer before. But still. Damn it's big. After taking some times to caliber video and desktop color with nvidia drivers, h.284/1080p movie trailers look great. Left4dead in native resolution is great. Surfing web is kinda different. First time i own a monitor with such brightness quality, so white appears white for the first time.

Overall, that's what i expected from a cheap Acer monitor. It's great, but not perfect. Only one big negative point : the big little blue power led. Annoying :cheesygri

Just picked up a X243w at Victoria Park X Ellesmere... and the 1 year plan because I'm too lazy to ship back to Acer if things happen... (Blame it on my previous Acer experiences)

So far:

The Good:
- This monitor is BRIGHT... makes me wonder if the backlight of my previous monitor was broken (Samsung 912N)

- ZERO dead pixels (yay!)

- Colors are so-so, but not TOO bad considering this is a 24" TN for ~$250

- 1920 * 1200 is pretty practical... and my desktop looks HUGE compared to my 19"

The Bad:
- The item is pretty large, and you'll have to make sure you have space on your desk. (I had to relocate my center speaker, as well as the control unit of my Z5500)

- The stand is a bit flimsy, and has a pretty large footprint. Tilt function is OK, but be careful to tilt slowly.

- No XP drivers, although the monitor functions normally using 'plug and play monitor'

- Staples will not handle warranty after 30 days UNLESS you buy their extended warranty

- An extra HDMI wouldn't hurt, but I suppose that's what the P244 was for...

The Ugly:
- Quite a bit of bleeding on the edges, reaching a little over 1 cm from the side

- The Blue LED is a royal pain to get used to...

***

A note about Staples:
(Excuse me if I'm REALLY out of date)

The 'improved' warranty plan can only be refunded 30 days after purchase, as opposed to when the factory warranty expires back in the days.

24 hours elapsed since acquisition of P244W Bii at my Bureau en Gros in Qc.

Color: 7.9/10 looks a little dull to average viewer but not to me. More on the neutral natural side I would say.

Size: I'am using it as a TV monitor for Bell HD PVR and 2 HDMI connectors Very Nice 10/10 and HD image is clear and well defined/detailed even on a 24"
But I did use the tilt to make the picture more contrasted and it helped!

Plus side: Auto-Switching senses wich component is open and then switches to the component left running. Cool.

Stand is quite Ugly looks like Penguin Feet " V "

No stuck dead pixel on mine. A litle bleeding on the edge nothing major to return unit.

The bad
Staples/Bureauengros will honor warranty for only first month then you have to deal directly with ACER wich was alot of worries when I had bought their TV screens in the past (5 years ago). So:

Overal score of price vs features: 9.3/10

Overal score of after sale service: 7.8/10 (based on past experience directly with Acer)

Probability of unit going back to staple with it: Probably 9.5/10
I didn't have a good experience being treated with ACER.
I wished Staples would handle the warranty then it would be a solid purchase recommendation. For that alone, I can NOT recommend this product.

While it is working and you have no problems or issues with your unit, you have a solid purchase but if the problem arise then you will see it is not quite easy to deal with ACER alone.

Isn't that what most stores usually do? At least I've never had luck bringing back items to them after 30 days without extended warranty.

From my experiences at BestBuy / Futureshop, unless it's within 30 days of the purchase, I'd have to deal with the manufacturer for warranties.

A cheap way of forcing you to buy their extended warranties, but it does make sense in a way.

Previously, the extended warranty at staples could be refunded up until the day it activates (i.e. 3rd year + 1 day). With the new 'improved' system, however, you only get 30 days from purchase to decide whether you want the extended warranty.

My monitor does not do this, I tried. Here's what happened.

Turned computer on, turned monitor off, left it alone for several hours. Came back, turned on monitor and lights came on buttons. A few seconds later, the Acer splash screen came on for a few seconds, then it went to "no signal". I moved my mouse and the screen came back to life.

The computer doesn't go into sleep/hibernate, it is still on because I can still hear music and such if I press play on my keyboard.

I guess I have a defective unit? If I unplug the power cord and replug it I can sometimes turn the screen back on but none of the touch sensitive buttons light up. I will take it back tomorrow and exchange for another and see how it goes.

The store I went to required the printout so I PMed at BB instead.

But I'm going to return the one @ BB and get another one @ Staples to extend my P244W trial :). Gotta make sure it doesn't die after 28 days!

Get the X243 instead and let me know how it is :P

P244W Bii
The same thing happen to me last night.
I tried opening monitor and it refused to come on.
I pressed 8 times and could not open it.

I then changed the power cord in the back for another spair I had and after 4 consecutive tries, it finally came alive again. Since then it has worked but I will return it tomorrow morning.

Don't like that behavior at all. Once is to many for me!

Too bad 2 HDMI is awesome but reliability is upmost important to me!

Me too.

The same thing happen to me in the morning.

It was perfect last 5 days, and then it happen to me right now.

Monitor did not turn on automatically, and I touched keyboard and alive.

Also, the front menu light [Splash menu] is dead totally.

Return policy is 14 days.

Can i return to store?

EDIT: I just tried to pull power cord out and reconnect it, splash menu is alive now.
Why it happen to this monitor? Driver or firmware problem.
I think it will happen again, Can I fix this probelm?

Same things happened to the one I bought. Wouldn't turn back on after it goes into sleep mode. Was fine for the first few days. Returned it to Staples for full refund. Decided not to buy another Acer monitor. Think I will stick with my 20" Viewsonic (2035) for the time being.

Yikes... getting a little nervous about the purchase. I wonder how to stress test this monitor to check before the return policy is up?

I wonder if Acer would be interested in this thread since it appears to be pointing out a serious hardware failure in one of their products...

Is the monitor standby issue only present for XP users? Or do Vista users also have the same problem?

My X243 does that occasionally as well (under XP), but it goes back to normal once I power cycle the monitor.

Still waiting for an XP driver...

I am using Vista Home OS, and I decide to return this monitor.

I think It will happen again, it is the reason why they want to sell it as clearance....

I've been using the X243 with my Sony FW laptop (HDMI to DVI cable) running Vista Home Premium. Didn't install anything...just plugged it in. It's been rock solid since I bought it on the first day of the sale. The laptop is my main computer used daily and has gone through many sleep or hibernate cycles already. Never a glitch so far.

I don't ever touch the power button on the monitor. When the computer powers down or sleeps, the monitor senses the signal is lost and automatically goes to sleep. When the computer is turned on, the monitor automatically turns back on.

I run the monitor with Brightness and Contrast at zero for best results. e.g. photoshopping etc. The default settings are liable to burn your retinas

I've been leaving mine on 24/7 since Jan. 28 and it still auto turns on from sleep mode when I move the mouse. I have 4.5 days left to refund. What should I do? Keep or refund?

Mine is still going strong too. I'm going to take my chances with it (and Acer support if it ever comes to that).

I figure since I'm on my third XBOX the least I can do is give another company a chance to sell me subtandard merchandise.

My front panel OSD stopped working, lights have been off for 20+ hours. Everything else seems to work. Is it worth it to RMA just for the OSD?

I have the same issue. I ensured all power management options were off. The only thing that does work is unplugging the monitor. I've sent in a tech request to Acer and will post what they tell me. Only other option I see is to actually use the power management option and select power down the monitor after x amount of time... this has worked for me but would rather fully turn off an item if I'm not going to be using it for several hours.
