Hey all,
I've seen a few topics lately about purchasing an HD TV and being able to buy a Rogers 4250 HD box for $99.99. Well I noticed this morning on the Best Buy website that the price had gone down to $149.99, with no HDTV purchase necessary. See here (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10097795&catid=20229) . There wasn't any stock listed in my area however, so I checked Future Shop website (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10097795&catid=24993), but the price was still at 249.99.
I was going to Future Shop this afternoon anyways to pick up a few of the 2.99 USB memory sticks.. so I figured what the heck, I'd try a price match. As soon as I got to the counter with the 4250 and asked about their price match policy, the person who rang me in said "oh yea, it's 149". He made it sound like that was the FS price too, and I didn't really notice if he had to do a price override. I was actually a bit disappointed not to get the extra 10% of the difference, but still a pretty good deal I figured.
Anyways I hope that helps for anybody who is in the market for one, but isn't purchasing a new TV anytime soon.
Update: It looks like Sears is selling them at this price too.

Thanks,
My parents bought this at the rogers dealer for about $199+tax (about $225) so I told them to return it and go buy it at FS. BB is sold out near us.
Hopefully, they refund it.

Is it worth it to get this box if you only have basic cable or do you need to pay for one of the higher end cable plans to really take advantage of it?
Thanks

You need an HDTV or else it's redundant over the older box. Pretty much.

If you have an HDTV its great as the basic HD pack is free with basic cable, you just miss out on a few channels, Discovery, TSN, Showcase, A&E, but you should get every channel, that has an equivalent channel in basic, in HD.

Also look into calling Rogers for a free 12 month credit of the HD Box rental.
Just give them a call, theres a thread about that, you may even get a PVR.
Unless you have a 2nd TV. Also theres a store that will order them at $99, its a Chinese store, 1 month wait. Got mine there without a sale. Forgot the name, i'll edit the post with it as soon as i find the receipt.

Great deal if you already have a HD TV or missed the boxing day deal. I bought an extra one (4250) if anyone wants it at cost, before I return........stock is hit and miss, but my buddy decided on not keeping it. PM me and might be able to deliver if you're close.

This might be a little off topic, but consider Over the Air HD instead of feeding the Rogers monster.
I bought a $55.00 stick that had a crappy little antenna. Plugged it into my PC and without even trying I had a bunch of HD channels. Now, with a bit of fiddling and fine tuning, I receive Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC, CTV, CBC, PBS, Global, E! and a few other stations.
The big network stations come in very clear except ABC. ABC is currently upgrading thier buffalo antenna. The broadcasts are from 720i to 1080i, stereo sound etc.
So for minimal start up cost, I have 15 Free HD channels.
Besides, after Rogers sent me the letter saying they were jacking up my rates, I figure they don't really want me as a customer!

If you have a tube tv the 940SD is at the Source for $99 but goes down to $49.99 on a regular basis (we got one for our old tube tv for the kids to watch in the basement like YTV). And usually they have a programming credit going on at the same time. So we basically got the 940SD for free.
With the 4250HD basic cable will give you around 18 free HD channels (CBC NewsWorld has just been added to the free HD channels). Also you get timeshifting channels for the Canadian channels. Rogers on Demand has some freebies and recently some of the major networks has put some of their top shows on demand for free.

I know a few people who did this. They tell me that the quality of the picture/sound is actually BETTER than Rogers due to compression that Rogers uses in their HD programming.

[what area do you live in? how big is the antenna. Is the antenna installed outside the house?]
I'm in Scarborough, around Kingston Road and Markham Road. 7th Floor of an condo building facing West. The antenna is literally the crappy little 1' high thing that came with the usb stick. the antenna is about 2' away from the computer (indoors, lol)
Fox comes in crystal clear all the time. Some of the other US networks will drop off periodically. ABC is more or less crap right now as they are upgrading thier broadcast tower. My PC is connected to my tv via a dvi > Hdmi cable. PC is running a gforce9500 and the tv is a 1080p Olevia 47".
The Canadian channels are worse. I figure this is because I get most of the building blockage to the north of my location. ( I have a clear view south / south west over the lake)
With a proper antenna, ($100 to $300) I'm sure you could clear all the available channels for the GTA (supposedly 21 OtA)
You can not get sports, or movie channels OtA. This is just the network broadcasters like... abc, nbc, cbs, fox, ctv, global, cbc, pbs, omni 1, 2.. etc

I've never paid for rental for a long time. The key is to call back when your free rental is over and negotiate a new contract with them that includes free rental. I've had boxes from Rogers rental-free for the past 3 years.

On Jan 17, 2009 I saw the HD Illico Explorer 4250 HD at Zellers in Atwater Metro in Montreal for $169.99 (minus the 100.00 credit from Videotron - for subscribing to HD television - making it 69.99). A very good price.....It may be worth it to check if you can still get the receiver for this low price.
Check if Zellers is still selling the receiver for $169.99 and verify if videotron is still offering the special as it was called their "Superbowl Special."
Obviously, this special is only good if you are a new subscriber to HD television..and would not be available for people who already own a HD box and are just looking to purchase another one. In any case, it's worth a try!!!

one problem with buying the box, instead of renting it, is that Rogers won't service it/replace it, if you run into problems.
a tech actually told me that when i had to get my HD-PVR replaced (got it free from Rogers for 2yrs).
i understand that spending $149 is cheaper than $18/mth, over the long-run, but when an upgraded box comes out, you'd have to buy a new one, instead of just getting your current one replaced through Rogers.
just my 2¢.

That really depends if you care about the new boxes. The 4250HD had HDMI port so it's great for the HDTVs since the 3250HD older model didn't have it. You do get one year warrenty on the box through the store. I got a 4250HD for $99 so yes it's worth it for me to own it right now since I can't seem to get free rental anymore. The PVRs though have more problems with them. My sister works for Rogers so she gets a good discount. She has the PVR and said she'd never buy one because of all it's problems. But she said if you find the 4250HD on super cheap then go for it.

I'm not sure you will get it because the $99 deal was a Rogers promotion if you bought any HD TV. The $99 promotion with Rogers was over back in late January. I bought mine on the last day of the promotion.
I believe whenever someone would buy a HD capable TV from HDTV and not buy a box, they sold it to someone who just wanted the box.
You should definitely call to see if they have boxes left over from the promotion because I wouldn't want to make a trip for nothing.
BTW, the two HDTV stores share the same name but they are two separate companies. I think their respective owners are related but are in competition with each other...kind of like Bestbuy and Futureshop.
