I've noticed a few people doing a certain tricep exercise at the gym and I wanted to know the proper name so I can look up proper technique.

It's a dumbbell exercise where the person lies down on a bench and holds only one dumbbell with both hands above their chest, then lowers the dumbbell back behind their head, and back up again to the starting position.

It is NOT this exercise below but something similar (in the one I'm describing, the person uses one dumbbell and doesn't bend their elbows so much):

What you are describing is a variant of the lying tricep extension.Try them with a curl bar held close together over head and then lower to your forehead with elbows approximately above the chest.Easier to handle a bar or even two dumbells as opposed to one.

Wrong.

It's and extension ( tricep ) exercise.

Lying Dumbbell Extension

poedua is correct if describing the picture as you have posted.
The person is working out triceps by extending the elbows.

However, the OP seems to be describing a Chest exercise.
If you are holding one weight and keeping your elbows straight, you are most likely doing a Pullover as linked by Dell.

Both exercises target different muscles and only differ slightly in execution. So both descriptions are right in a sense.

The OP can look at both and see which one he means.

Once again...it is a variation of the lying tricep extension using a dumbell.Semantics maybe but what you are doing is extending the tricep not the apparatus.

if your holding one dumbell, you can classify it as a skullcrusher but that name is most commonly used with barbells. if you rather hold a dumbell and do this, i suggest using in 90 bench that is used for shoulder presses. the reason is holding the double grib while holding the dumbell is hard on your wrists but using a handle is alot easier. like others have said, there are so many variations and names that is easy to confuse.

Because there are certain descriptions and names of exercises that could be .............just plain wrong.
