Looking for something that showcases Blu-Ray, think Baraka, Planet Earth, etc.

This will be on a 42" plasma, 1080i (tops out at that) sitting 6 feet away.

I am not too concerned about dialogue, but looking for something with good picture quality.

The most common right now would be:

Transformers, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2.
I would say something like The Last Samurai perhaps or even Casino Royale.

No Country for Old men

Have that in my collection, it is a must have for Coen fans.
And there are good visuals in HD, shots of the desert and stuff.

Any Disney film like the Chronicles of Narina, Pixar movies. They have excellent PQ. Just watch Cars, Ratatouille or Walle.

the only time i'd buy blurays are for the real 'keeper' movies. The Dark Knight and Blade Runner would be prime examples. Transformers looked stunning but i wouldn't own it.

John Woo's "Red Cliff" is definitely recommended for blu-ray. Movie looked so beautiful in high definition that you coulda sworn it was a painting. Hong Kong BD has the watermark thing though. There's also a Taiwanese version of the bluray from the folks at Deltamac. Their releases usually don't have any watermark.

Planet Earth and Wall-E is what I usually see recommended for this purpose. Pick up Planet Earth for about $45 - $50 from Amazon UK and Wall-E at Rogers Plus' 25% off used BluRay sale.

I'm thinking of getting Baraka.

Few things

Paramusic near Ryerson was selling the Dark Knight for $19.99...fake?

Also, is the PS3 a decent blu-ray player? E.g is it like a "low-end" blu-ray player? or is it just like any other bluray player.

It's not only one of the best it also loads blu rays as fast as the super high end blu ray machines out there! I've never had a problem with mine and would absolutely recommend it!

Where can I buy this in the GTA? Please don't say Pacific Mall and I'd rather not order it online either.

I'd like to know as well. I couldn't even find Chinese blu-rays at P-Mall last time I looked. The plaza at Warden/Steeles might have some, though.

I don't think you can ever find any Asian blu rays in Asian centers. They are too crooked to carry legit stuff. The only other place where I have seen Asian movies was Star Struck but they don't carry all the titles. Though they might import one if you ask them.

Your safest bet is to use DDDhouse or Buyoyo for Asian Blu rays. Though if anyone does find a legit source for Asian blu rays, I would like to know too.

Like I said, they don't. There are actually some stores that sell legit DVDs (i.e. the music store beside the north entrance), but unfortunately not Blu-Rays. It's a shame, because I'd really like to buy HK BD movies locally instead of paying $40-50 online.

the movie was bad but if u want to just use it to showcase Hi Def/Blu Ray then you should check out Speed Racer.
the HD content will melt you eyes..even though the movie might melt your brain. :cheesygri

Broadcast books/music sells asian import blu-rays. Though pricey from $35.99 (older releases) and up. They also have alot of asian blu-ray concerts releases as well

I believe Pacific Mall has a shop and First Markham Place definately has a location. I have seen pretty much majority of the asian releases there. They can also order/pre-order some for you if they dont have stock.

Yeah, Broadcast Books sells legit blu-ray discs imported from Hong Kong. They have two locations that I know of. Pacific Mall and First Markham Place. I actually got my friend to buy "Red Cliff" BD version through a friend of mine visiting HK and even then, it was pretty expensive. It was $269 HKD. you can divide that by 6.3 to get the Canadian equivalent. Somewhere about $40-45 bucks.

Harmony is definitely not recommended. They love to jack up the price to everything they sell. Compared to Broadcast Books, they're even worse in terms of price.

Mong Kok is the place for cheap blu-rays. I picked up Red Cliff there in January for $210 hkd.

Two places i found that had cheaper asian blu-rays. Dont bother going to big shops like HMV etc, mad expensive.
For your reference if you go back to HK,

Laser Collection
LG 15, 6E Nelson Street Tak Fat Shopping Arcade Mong Kok
(this shop sells alot of Blu-rays and prices are quite competitive. You can find pretty much any title both asian and imports here)

Sino Centre
582-592 Nathan Road, Mong Kok
(this shopping arcade sells DVDs, music Cds, games, toys etc) ALl shops are small and the shops have a small handful of blu-rays. Prices I find here are cheaper than anywhere else in Hong Kong, but selection varies as well as stock. You would have to walk from store to store to find the title you want)

When I was in Hong Kong last year, most of the shops were closing down. I couldn't find one decent DVD shop in the Mongkok area. Although I found some decent deals at CD Warehouse which I recommended my friend to go. He didn't listen and went to HK Records instead.

The taiwan release is the same as the HK release. The only difference is that teh taiwan release has a slipcase and it doesnt have the watermark that appears once in a while. I noticed the watermark a few times during the movie, but majority of the time i was not distracted by it.

Most shops carries blu-rays now as i believe they are starting to get more popular in HK. Though they are still bloody expensive. I even see the canadian releases there Sin City and DUsk til dawn for around $180 HKD where we had them for $10 cdn. Recent hollywood releases are usually $238 and up.

THe shops in mong kok that sells asian blu-rays esp SIno centre mainly sells DVD and music cds and their stock are usually very small perhap 10-20 titles.

I just got back from HK 3 days ago, and I was scouring HK for BDs. Most chinese concerts / movies in BD are avg. HKD 268, so not that much difference from buying it at Broadcast at P-Mall except for the tax. Hollywood new releases are quite expensive.

That's because the exchange rate has gotten lower. Shopping for BD last year was a blast though. Also, just a note of precaution for Jacky Cheung fans, his latest concert BD is encoded in PAL so it will not be playable in North American PS3's.

According to a few sites including Yesasia, Jacky Cheung BD concert is blu-ray all region.

Back on topic, i would nominate Planet Earth as well. With 4 discs and under 4 hours total of viewing. It has amazed alot of my family and friends.
