Haha well he did get one for the Golden Globes.
Heath will definitely win though.

Unfortunately The Dark Knight got snubbed for Best Picture and Best Director.
Some other films got snubbed too.

I'm disappointed that The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button has so many damn nominations.

Sure, Brad Pitt gave a great performance. But it's a short story that was originally 3-4 pages that high school students read, dragged on for 3 hours into a film that's like watching Forrest Gump version 2.0! It's the same screenwriter for bloody sakes!

I wouldn't say it got snubbed. It got 8 nominations, rightly deserved. And also, it rightly didn't get nominated in the Best Picture and Best Director category. The 3rd half of the film was totally off-pace and disjointed. It was a good movie, but that is it. I am glad the AMPAS didn't bow to the enormous pressure in feeling that they had to nominate it.

half of those nominations are ass...the other half i agree with..like most people here said. the benjamin button movie doesnt deserve 13 nominations...and slumdog for best film? good contender but hardly a winner.

milk? watching ACTUAL milk was more entertaining and action packed...and yes , the comment is oozing sarcasm.

The one thing I am happy with is the fact that Dark Knight isn't nominated for Best Picture.

I don't think an animated movie will ever get a Best Picture nomination again since they've created the ghetto known as Best Animated Film.

Amen to that.
The Reader does not deserve best director/picture.
They could have easily replaced it with The Dark Knight.

I agree with "The Reader". I watched an early screening of the movie last month and it didn't strike me as the kind of movie that would get rave reviews. Kate Winslet though, I have to admit, was pretty good. Ralph Fiennes though was underutilized in the movie, although the actor who played the younger version of him did a decent job.

Man on Wire should snag the best doc award. It was fascinating to see all the details of Phillipe chasing his dreams of walking across the twin towers. What made it even better was that after you watch the film your happy with his success but by the end of the film your feeling for him as a human being does a 180 turn.

And of the other nominees, which would you pick? In general the entire field was weak this year, and honestly, SDM does hold up better than the rest. I mean, it has to compete with what? The Reader?

And the other categories were a given too. It correctly did not win the award for Sound Editing, which TDK deserved. But it totally did deserve the sound mixing award (although I would have been happy with Wall-E too).

I was surprised at the song, but Peter Gabriel's snub might have hurt it. I was really hoping for Wall-E or In Bruges for Original Screenplay. However the biggest upset of the evening was the foreign film. No one expect Departures (Japan). IT seemed to be head to head with "Waltz with Bashir" or "The Class". Really surprising that one.

mickey rourkes performance is overrated imo.... the thing is that wrestlers do exactly what he did everyday... he probably just followed around jake the snake for one day and had his whole acting right there...

being a big wrestling fan for most of my life...the movie overall was good but it was just a poor man's documentary of a mixture of different wrestlers...he delivered it ok but not so amazing as ppl make it out to be....

if anyone with anything to deal with wrestling should win an oscar, it should be Ric Flair... simply amazing...

+ ! Haha Ric Flair! :)

Though I still think Mickey should have won, it was an awesome portrayal.
That was what Darren was aiming for, to demonstrate how these wrestlers can get hurt in the ring day in and day out, but for some of them if not most of them are hurt outside of the ring. From drug addictions, to family problems etc.
Mickey was goddamn awesome. I have to see Milk so I can really justify Sean Penn's win.

it's not just about the wrestling scenes. It's about real life problems that Ram had outside of the ring, and how he had to cope with getting older. Still respected by the up and comers, and those in the industry, while his body has to withstand punishment meant for much younger men. wrestlers could do the wrestling scenes, but I doubt they'd have been able to pull off the performance Mickey did overall.

Sean Penn did a good job. It was an honest portrayal for the most part, but it wasn't really a role that someone else couldn't have done just as effectively. The big dramatic scene was a few tears in one scene, and the largest stretch was him having to act like a gay man. There's no one scene that comes to mind where you reflect on the movie and say "That was a great scene".

I was really surprised at Sean Penn's win. I didn't see that coming at all.

Why not? Penn won the SAG Best Actor awards and the majority of Academy members are SAG members as well. I think that Rourke was probably a close second though but his private life and past history was too off-putting to the more conservative members of the Academy. He partied with Paris Hilton last week -- that's something Oscar nominees don't do. These award shows are giant popularity contests and you've got to have a great on-screen performance combined with a decent public persona.

Oh come on now. Just because they're Jewish, that doesn't mean they'll flock to a specific film. Considering Winslet won for her portrayal of a Nazi guard who let hundreds of jewish women die, I would think they tend to base their decision on artistic matters rather than politics.

It's called "OSCARS DISAPPROVE ON PROP 8 DECISION SO SUFFER YOU MIDDLE AMERICAN HOMOPHOBES AS WE GIVE SEAN PENN THE AWARD FOR PLAYING A GAY POLITICIAN OH AND P.S. EAT A LOG OF POO MICKEY ROURKE".

Oh, and the terrible tripe the screenwriter for Milk was talking about in regards to the politics of California- the Oscar's aren't a friggin' soapbox for your views. Nobody cares you wrote a story or you pretend for a living, in fact they probably hate you even more because of the "job" you have- given this, you think they actually care about your political opinions?
Considering the theme of the movie that Penn won for, his "rant" was appropriate to what the movie was all about. Milk himself would be proud.

Great to see Slumdog Millionaire reign as Top Dog, they deserve it and Rahman and co destroyed the place.

Exactly how I feel, even if the rest of the field was somewhat lackluster. I don't think I can sit through it a second time. The film was predictable and manipulative.

Putting John Legend there was like putting garlic with Chocolate Ice Cream but at least he can say it was the most important performance of his career.
