I've just jumped into the BD world and I'm amazed with the difference in quality from standard DVD.
What I do find frustrating is that my standard DVD collection has over 100 titles while my BD collection is quite small.
Just wanted to see what people are doing - are you re-buying some of your DVD titles with BD? What sways your decision? What do you do with your old DVD's?

I've only been upgrading when the br's are either really cheap, used, or for my favourite movies. I still have several hundred dvds that I haven't upgraded yet. If theres an hd-dvd version, i've been upgrading to that (cost savings, same relative output). I've been giving my old dvds to my parents/family. No point selling them for a few bucks.

I think I might take advantage of the ColumbiaHouse deal going on for .49 cents Blu-rays. That's the cheapest way I think to re-purchase some of those movies.
Good call with the Friends / Family...

Go to blu-ray.com and if you want to upgrade your DVD's, see the reviews, and see if the upgrade is worth it.
Someone who owns 'Kiss of the dragon' on DVD, it would be worthless to upgrade to a Blu-ray version because the blu version is horrible.
For me, I have upgraded some DVD's to Blu's (Transformers) and the results are amazing.
Try to upgrade your Fullscreen DVD's 1st, and then your widescreens later.

I only update the movies that I know I'll watch again, and that they have a much improved picture quality than the DVD's. Or, if it is a guilty pleasure of mine, then i'll buy it on blu ( like Transforms 1986. Have all the DVD copies and the Metrodome Blu ).
Though, I refuse to update any of my TV's box sets, unless the price is right ( or Stargate SG-1/Atlantis comes out :P )

I upgrade some of my DVDs to Blu-ray. I always check the reviews first though as there as plenty of catalogue titles that aren't really worth it because the studio may not spend a lot on the new transfer. I usually wait a bit for the price to drop too as catalogue titles generally aren't in as high demand as new release titles. It depends on the movie too. I like Wedding Crashers and own the DVD but won't upgrade to the Blu-ray as the video/audio upgrade isn't enough to justify the extra cost. However, whenever LOTR comes out, I will totally buy those right away!
BTW, the abbreviation is BD (Blu-ray Disc, not BR.

Thanks! I edited my post to BD instead of BR.
I just went through the Columbia House selection with BD for 49 cents. Re-buying 3 movies - 300, I Am Legend, and Casino Royale. I figure those 3 are movies I'll watch again and at the enrollment price, it's worth it. Also re-bought Band of Brothers BD from the Amazon.com deal from yesterday.
Too bad they don't have those $10 rebates if you already own those movies on DVD.

King Kong came out yesterday on BD and has gotten great reviews for its PQ/AQ. I got the HD DVD for cheap though.

i only upgrade for movies which i know will look awesome in HD like most animations. other than that, i don't see the point in buying a movie who's 20 years old in HD. seriously, it won't look that much better than upconvert

I had this other dilemma the other day. I upgraded the entire Infernal Affairs trilogy for the blu-ray boxset. But I know I had to keep the first one on DVD. It was autographed.

It depends on how much effort was put into the restoration and the quality of the print. Casablanca all the way from 1939 looks incredible in high-def. Gangs of New York from 2005 looks terrible though.

I'm super pissed off with my BD copy of LOST Season 4.
For the money i spent i was expecting the PQ to look better than xvid or DVD.
Im trying to find a number or website where i can complain and hopefully get refunded.

I've been rebuying some titles (like Disney ones) and giving my old ones away to family. With today's economy, it's hard to justify buying something you already own :cheesygri

+1.
If they're cheap, I'll upgrade first to HDDVD. Then BD. No point in paying more for the same quality.

I might do King Kong on BD if I find it really cheap somewhere. I have the hd dvd version that came with the 360 hd dvd player but the movie is only the theatrical release not the directors cut

I cant be bothered so replace my dvds with BD. Now that used BD are starting to come down in price I buy most my movies on BD (used of course). For me, the difference between BD and DVD just isnt worth ANOTHER $30 to buy the same movie on BD. I dont watch movies as many times as I did in the past either so theres even less of a reason for me replace my collection.

I have a lot of DVDs, and I would go broke upgrading all of them to BD, so I am selective about which titles I re-buy. If I can get them cheap or used, I jump on those opportunities but only for movies that I really like. I wouldn't upgrade a title like Spider-Man 3 when I can just watch the upconverted DVD, but I would definitely upgrade for Spider-Man 2.

I agree. I've been researching which titles are worth upgrading. I find that's the best way to get the most bang for your buck. No sense upgrading if the BD quality is only marginally better than the DVD...an upconverted DVD would suffice.

I've put my old DVD's in a box. Might sell / donate them eventually. I have a healthy collection HDDVD and BD, many are duplicates. I have 3 copies of Blackhawk Down. DVD, Superbit and BD. lol
I will re-buy movies I like because I will never watch them in SD. Quality of the movie depends on how much I will pay for the new ones. Something like LOTR will be a day 1 purchase, others will be bought when a thread is made in the hot deals forum.

only some. Matrix i double dipped on..and im glad of course. I think the transporter series will also be a double dip. The rest of the stuff i wont bother with unless its a worthy transfer (LOTR/Star Wars/ect)
some are a huge difference. some arent worth re-buying yet (sin city now out has no extras and isnt the uncut version..so im waiting on that)

as a rule, i never buy any BDs unless its under or at $15/16 per. Only exceptions are disney/pixar things that never go below $20

Amen to that. Or even $9.
i.e. During the boxing day craziness Kill Bill Vol 1. and Vol 2. and Reservoir Dogs were $9.99 at Best Buy. Just as they were on Amazon.
I went to BB and they only had Reservoir so I bought that for $9.99, and then got both Kill Bills for $9.99 each from Amazon along with some other items.
Afterall in this situation, Quentin Tarantino hasn't stated when he's releasing "Kill Bill the Whole Bloody Affair"...especially on Blu-Ray.
