Swagbucks - free gift cards and other prizes

I searched for Swagbucks but I did not see anything so sorry if this is a repost. I am quite surprised this hasn't been discussed at RFD.
This is my first thread start at RFD after many years of lurking and leeching! I think I have found something worthwhile to come out into the light.

Swagbucks is a site where you search which is powered by Google and AskJeeves. It rewards you by 'randomly' awarding you with Swag Bucks in denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, etc. You trade these in for prizes such as gift cards from Starbucks, Amazon, Subway, etc or save up for big items like an Xbox360 bundle or iPhone.

I have looked around and this does not look like a scam and it has been verified by many sites. You can google Swagbucks, scam or something to do your research but it looks legit.

I have been using swagbucks instead of google for about 3 days and I have 40 Swag Bucks. This is a sample of what you can purchase:

3 SB - Valley Sports Card e-Gift Card (?)
36 SB - classic VHS or Vintage Records
45 SB - Amazon.com $5 gift card
50 SB - Starbucks $5 gift card
25 SB - various limited edition music prints
10 SB+ - various sports cards
3800 SB - iphone
4100 SB - Xbox360 premium bundle

I figure if i use this for one year getting ~ 10 SB a day I will have about 3500 SB's and will be close to getting a free iphone. It takes only days to get a free $5 starbucks card.

You start off with 2 free swag bucks and 1 more on your first search (that is what happened for me). While you search, you can get randomly win Swagbucks in denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10 or $20. Usually it's $1-2 but you get the occasional $5-20. Shipping and Handling to Canada is free.

You can not spam search with swagbucks, there seems to be some sort of time limit to how often you can win. Most of the time it's been more than 1 hour before I win again, but I have won once in a 20 min span. It's just best to incorporate it into your daily internet usage and forget about it.

I so love this site. The only problem is that I normally don't use search engines very often. But last week, or maybe the week before, I redeemed for banana buttons, and a t-shirt.
I just don't understand, if we are referring people to a site, why can't we get credit for that referral? Is it because technically we used redflagdeals to tell them, redflagdeals is the referrer not us?

Even if you do not search much, try bookmarking the search results page. I'll try to make a clearer example to earn more Swag Bucks:

A) you have a bookmark of Red Flag Deals with www.redflagdeals.com

Canadians can order anything but electronics from the U.S. website. We can also order from the UK site if we want. Done it many times when the Cdn site doesn't have the book or dvd I want.

I think you can only get books and cds from amazon.com. I am not sure, but that's what I heard.

I rely on high quality results from Google too much to use this.

I'm a bit undecided about this swagbucks. My first problem is that I already have two toolbars installed to earn points from My Points and airmiles from Airmiles, this is already a pain in the butt :cry: and neither produce good results. :(

Then I look at the swagbucks prizes and there is almost nothing that I want, the only exception being maybe the amazon ecards but even then I'm hesitant as the shipping will probably kill me on amazon.com orders. Aside from the fact that even the big prizes don't interest me, the big prizes are too far away for me to even consider.

I made 8 swagbucks yesterday, my first day - it's going to be a long time before I earn enough for anything.

I'm using all three searches just to go to sites I was going to anyways as the results from all three are less than desirable, the bookmarking suggestion for swagbucks is a good idea and probably the most painless way to get the occasional swagbuck.

I've done some looking around and see they post bonus swagbuck codes periodically on the blog and on facebook but they seem to go fast - they tend to be available for a very short period of time or for a set number of people. (first 99 people, first 300 people)

On the upside, I get the impression they are adding new prizes pretty regularly so maybe by the time I have a decent amount of swagbucks, there will be something I'm interested in.

Thanks for the post. I signed up yesterday and now i have 10 swagbucks. It will take me a long time to get anything i really want..but its free :) . I just want to know, how is it that you know there is a time limit on searches. I was looking at the 'how it works' portion of the site(not very helpful) and the FAQs and i could not find how many times u are allowed to search. It makes it seem as if u can search indefinitely and u are awarded swagbucks randomly.

I think it is a time limit because that's what i read from other 'experienced' swag buckers on their blogs. I've used it for about a week now and I can access the internet regularly throughout the day, and based on experience..after i win a swagbuck from a search, i won't get one for the next hour or 2. And I seem to be able to win every couple hours. Definitely immediately after I win a swagbuck, it is not likely you will win again for the next hour. It's happened once. It was about 20 minutes after and I was quite surprised because I wasn't expecting it but I was just using my swagged bookmarks and i won.

Mechanical: are you sure you are logged in? Make sure you're login name is in the top right of your screen.

I win about 5-6 times a day. I don't surf throughout the day but I access the internet in 1-2 hour intervals.

Sometimes I will go away for a couple hours and I come back and I am expecting to win one..but i don't. So who knows.... I find if you search too often in a short time span...i never win anything.

You do not have to be logged in to win a Swag Buck. Just make sure you search with the Swag Buck search engine and you will be equally likely to win one. As soon as you see a win, it gives you the option to login and redeem your SB.

3-4 a day wins of $1 is $60 a year..sure it's not the greatest..but it is free. And maybe you'll win a couple 5s, 10s and 20s...

I have 62 SB, not including SB earned from friends and it's been about a week for me. Yes I got a lucky 20 SB win but hey..even without that win - that's still 42 for the week ~ about a $5 gift card so it's worth it to me. But again I just think you should incorporate it into your bookmarks and forget about it.

I'm not trying to be a smart aleck but seriously - if you bought one less coffee a day and saved a dollar from that, you could buy the iPhone faster than collecting SB's. If I really want to search for something without sifting through crap, I just use google alone, but the swagbucks search is usually not so bad. The site I'm looking for is usually on the first page.

I guess you can still "buy" gift cards that are emailed, but physical articles are probably a no-go.

On a related note, do you think that if I put my address but put Ontario as the province that the article will end up at my place? I know Canada Post will use the postal code to get the right area but what about Puro/UPS/FedEx?

Yes, that's what I'm planning on doing too. I read on another board about people saving up their amazon.com certificates to buy stuff, and I think the only case where they would not be stackable is if the were promotional certificates, but these are just regular gift cards, so it should be fine.

I've been lurking for awhile now, just wanted to add a few swagbucks thoughts that I had.

If you think about saving up for an iphone, which seems like it will take forever there are two obvious downsides 1) ...it will take forever and 2) there's a chance this site, like many others, will disappear. I figured (I am attempting to save up for an xbox360 or something similar) instead of taking that risk perhaps cashing out for 5$ gift cards is the better approach? If you cash out every 45 swagbucks then at least you have that and say by the time you save up 300$ - which I calculated to be 2700 bucks - the site goes down you'll at least have that much towards whatever it is you're working for.

The only possible downside to that is... do the gift cards expire?

Admittedly I checked the whois on swagbucks just to see when it was registered to and its registered to 2010 sometime (other sites are only registered for say a year and then disappear).

I wish there were some way also (I know, no referrals here :) ) to get active referrals, I signed up under my friend and she said in the 5 days that I've been signed up I've already gotten her half-way to another gift card.

I've had my amazon.ca gift certificates in my account for a few years, and they're still there. So, no, I don't think they expire. Also I think by Canadian mandate they are not allowed to expire anymore... correct me if I'm wrong.

There's always been tax whenever I've ordered anything. They are required by law to charge tax, unless they want to pay out of their own pocket (which ;) I don't think they'd want to do)

I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but if you calculate it, it actually costs less to buy certain items from amazon than to redeem it through SB. That being said, you have to take into account taxes and such, so calculate carefully.

Hmm someone told me that it sets a limit sometime between 6-12 hours and after so many searches but that can't be right as I won only a few hours apart. Another easy method is to stop using www.youraddress.com instead I got my Google Chrome explorer to just use "www.swagbucks.com" as a redirect.

So if I wanted to open my gmail I would type in the url address bar : gmail

And it will go enter gmail into the swagbucks search url "http://swagbucks.com/?t=w&p=1&q=" that i wanted to search for gmail which turns out to be "http://swagbucks.com/?t=w&p=1&q=gmail" and I then click on the Gmail link.

So in a good way I will never accidentally type the wrong url and I earn swagbucks as well.


To do this simply download Google Chrome and go to the options screen

On the "Basics" tab look for "Default Search" Click on "Manage".

Click Add, then type this information:

Name: Swagbucks
Keyword: Swagbucks
Url: http://swagbucks.com/?t=w&p=1&q=%s

**Do not alter this information**

Then click on and look for swagbucks and click "make default"

Then exit the menus.

And from now on you can just simply type "redflagdeals"

And it will automatically search it for you and you click on the first link and it connects you to redflagdeals. Or you can just search whatever you want and not have to worry about going to www.swagbucks.com first.

These 'codes' are just that - a swagcode that is redeemed for a swagbuck or more depending on the code's value. You can enter them by clicking on 'your account' then there will be a little box that says 'swgacode' and you can eneter it there by pressing the 'gimmie' button. :D

it's mostly dependent on the time of day and what search terms you used. for example, i earned 7 swagbucks on the first day because i used terms late at night that no one else would be searching. yesterday i only got 1 because i am using the same search terms. swagbucks rewards based on unique searches and rewards those who use it normally.. the more you try to work the system, the less you get..

3-5 Business days or so. I've only ordered 2 so far though. -- They don't send you an email once they've issued it though, you have to check yourself in the Account section.

Like buddhababy mentioned above, you are better off checking twitter, the blog, and the swagbucks facebook wall. Googling will help you find expired codes.

If you don't have time to check all 3, the facebook wall is the best bet, since if a code is available, people are usually posting about finding the code, asking for hints, posting hints, or saying thanks for the code, so you'll know something is going on.

Just use it as your regular search engine, in addition to the bookmarks. Don't keep searching things repeatedly. In the beginning, I did a lot of searches at once and it was a waste of time. Just use it when you need to, or if you're bored and feel like surfing the web. The Swagbucks site says its designed to recognize and reward natural searching.

Is there an automated program that does searches by itself?

Spamming searches will not get you more points. Just search "naturally" and be rewarded. What I found out with this site is, the harder you search, the least you'll win. I usually win when it's least expected.

Automated program will get your account banned.

By the way, does anyone know any other sites that rewards users from using their site? (reliable and proven)

If you don't mind a bit of advice, may I suggest to you (and anyone else for that matter) that you cash in for your gift cards and add them to your Amazon account as you go.

There are no savings for cashing in for higher value cards over lower value cards; while it's fun to cash in for a big amount all at once, you run the risk of SwagBucks either a) raising the SB's needed for the gc's or b) the gc's no longer being offered (they have said the Amazon gc's will not be around forever see Post 47 (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8161111&postcount=47)) or c) the site itself goes under.

Lots of RFD'ers here can attest to big losses on Pigsback and Boomertowne in the past when the sites first raised the values needed to cash in for prizes then eventually shut down.

In just under a month, I got enough to get three Amazon gift cards. Although half of the points was from a friend I referred.

BTW, if you want a Wii, consider getting the Amazon gift card. The Wii is 3500 points, which is equivalent to 3500/45 = 77.8 Amazon gift cards. 77 Amazon gift cards, each worth 5 bucks is 385 bucks at Amazon.ca. Even if you pay regular price for a Wii at Amazon.ca using the oft-quoted 10 dollar coupon, that's 269.99, or 305 with tax and free shipping. And hey, you still got 80 bucks left over!

I completely agree. At Pigsback, at 3700 or so points, I had more than enough for a $25 GC, but I was saving for a $50 GC. They shut down without warning and for all my efforts I got nothing but a useless pen & paper set. So I would recommend cashing out ASAP.

Boomertowne went up in April 2007 and was down by September 2008.

Pigsback on the other hand was and still is an established site in Ireland since 2000 and in the UK since 2005. They came to Canada in 2007 and died here around June 2008.

Well, they could easily flop. I used to be involved with some shady rings in the past regarding -similar- payment sites. Ie) Alladvantage (used to have a banner on your screen and you'd earn like 10 cents an hour or something).

Various things like this you can easily exploit, especially with the referral system. The problem comes in when the ADVERTISERS start to tighten up on things and that is naturally transferred to the company (ie: Swagbucks) where they have to buckle down which obviously leads to us.

Take the Airmiles Toolbar for example, quite a few people on this site exploit it using a macro ( :twisted: ) and assuming that 1 air mile = 16 cents they're basically giving away $4.80 a month to each person.

If anyones noticed lately, they now have an automated macro detection system implemented with it, I'm guessing in relation to Yahoo getting pissy about how easy it is to exploit.

Long story short, I'd definitely cash out early.

Mine came in about 2 or 3 days. You should have a confirmation email from when you ordered it. Actually, when you place the order, you need to verify the order - check your account page and see if the status shows as unverified.

indeed, the page should look normal, if you look at your link URL, you will see your referral code inside at the end of it. When someone signs up through your link it will be reflected probably after 24 hours in your account as they will be listed as your friend. Good luck!

Wrong, that means nothing.
You would have to add the item to your card and checkout.
Then on the "shipping method" page you put you address
Next page you'll get an error saying

Yes- I ordered a couple weeks ago from amazon.com using my swagbucks gift cards. I had redeemed a number of amazon.com cards leading up to the order, and deposited them into my amazon.com account. Any unused amount is kept in your amazon.com account for your next order. I don't think you can transfer it out once you put it in, but once you deposit it, it won't expire.

There is no limit to stacking these cards, as they are gift cards, and you can apply the cards towards shipping, and also towards most Amazon Marketplace vendors.

I took a trip to the US, so I had amazon.com deliver the package to me at the hotel, so I saved on paying the shipping/import fees that would have been charged to have it delivered to me in Canada.

Some electronics can be delivered to Canada, it depends on the item, but the shipping charges are $19.99 per item, and also possibly a per item or per pound charge, depending on what it is, etc. It's all explained in their shipping rates section. Also, the item will usually say "For shipping only within US" or something like that in the item description. If you do a checkout, you can see exactly how much they will charge, including the import fee.

I think for most items, it's not worth it to order from amazon.com unless you can't get it in Canada. Gift card is just a payment method. You get charged tax on the full amount.

Then you can create a filter for emails with "Swagbucks - NEW CODES" as subject, and forward it to your phone's email address (supposing your carrier has that service).

There is a reason why I posted. Whats the point of going to enter the code when its expired. No one edits their message regularly saying the code is expired. To those who complain about getting an extra message on their phone, suck it up. You will benefit from the time savings at one point or another.

The perfect scenario is that the code poster edits their post so that we don't get more notifications, but of course the code poster isn't going to be the one who finds out when a code expires, so another post about expiry is necessary.

Speaking of the rules, should we allow code hints in that thread? Just in case someone sees a new hint and can't figure out what the code is, I think it's a good idea to post the hint in the subscription thread to let everyone know there's a code out there. The discussion about the hint goes to this thread, and the code, once people have figured it out, will go back to the subscription thread. It's a bit troublesome but at least you get more help in code hunting. What do you think?

If you mean Amazon.com Marketplace vendors, then yes you can. There is one exception- Eddie Bauer, and I think if there are others they will tell you at checkout, before you pay.
I just ordered a used CD from a Marketplace vendor and paid with Amazon.com gift cards.

You can also use amazon.com cards at endless.com, which is owned by amazon.com. They sell shoes and bags but they don't ship internationally yet.

However, amazon.ca does not let you use gift cards for the Marketplace vendors.

It kinda make sense. They earn money through sponsors/advertisers and use a small proportion of their revenue to distribute to swagbucks users as prizes.

Assuming their revenue does not increase proportionally with the increase in users with the referral system. The only way to maintain the site to continue functioning is to reduce the number of swagbucks given to users. That way, the dollar amount of prizes redeemed remains the same so they won't have to fork out additional $$ from their revenue pool.

From what I observe, if they want this site to continue growing/expanding, they will need more sponsors + increase spending by existing sponsors.

Lately, not very often! I can pretty much count on one in the morning, and one in the evening. For searching 1000+ things in one hour, I would expect to get 1SB, so don't waste your time with that. After I win, generally I don't win again for another few hours. Perhaps twice, I have won after only an hour, but that hasn't happened in a few weeks. I also find that I am only getting 1SB nowadays, while before I would get a 2 or 3 or 4 every once in a while.

For minimal work on your part, I would search first thing in the morning, then maybe 3-4 hours later, and then in the late evening. So basically spread your searching time out, and don't try too hard, just use it if you are searching for something.

If you go into almost any item it shows a regular and a featured price. Although you probably shouldn't save up for more then 1 GC if that is what you are buying since you can add them to your account and they never expire then, I still wouldn't be too worried about them going up to 100.

Has anyone that subscribes to the codes thread noticed a huge lag time from when the posts are made to when the emails get sent. I just got an email about the vicki code now and it was posted 2 1/4 hours ago. The email is going to my BB. Haven't had problems with other emails or before, just seems to be today.

Maybe there is just too many ppl subscribed to the thread. Just seeing there is 8400 + viewed, if half of that is subscribed, then that is 4000+ email to process.

The problem is when somebody gets an email, they go to the code thread, see the code at the bottom of the first page, use it and find out that it doesn't work, and post an expiry post immediately without seeing that on page 2 there's already an expiry post. They don't get that first expiry post in their email because they had not visited the thread since the code was posted.

Another scenario is that they get the code in the email, find out that it's expired, then click on that link to go to the code thread and see no expiry post at the bottom of page 1, and without checking page 2 post another expiry notice... I'm just trying to make sense of the many expiry posts we've been getting recently, lol

That would defeat the purpose of having a codes only thread to save time. You would need to subscribe to both if you were using a mobile phone.
