I just finished installing my new 5.1 surround sound system and I'm wondering what are some good DVD/Blu-ray movies that can show off the system?

Gross Point Blanke is a great way to test your sub woofer and surround. The gun fight scenes give a great sub woofer repsonse

Pretty much any action movie will do the trick. The more recent Star Trek and Star Wars movies are good for directional effects as the spaceships zoom all over the place with their weapons firing. Transformers also has an amazing sound design.

3 words: The Matrix Reloaded (HD-DVD or Blu-Ray).

I hooked up my 7.1 surround sound system and this was the first movie i watched. Honestly, I was blown away by the use of ALL the speakers, especially in the scene where Neo is fighting all the Agent Smiths. Awesome movie.

i've always been partial to the opening scenes of transformers (i.e. before you see shia lebouef). The helicopter whirring and the subsequent battle scene gives your sub and surrounds a nice little work out.

EDIT - Agree with above poster. The Matrix reloaded is a very good hi def title. Might want to check out black hawk down as well.

For the surround part, there is a scene in the Matrix where Trinity runs past the camera to the right and you can hear her continue to run behind you. And I think there is a part where you are looking over Neo's shoulder as he is working on the computer and there is a knock at the door and he turns around to look exactly where it sounds the knock is coming from.

Ridley Scott's Gladiator

Even the Dreamworks logo and music at the start is incredible.

How about T2? I am just guessing since I don't have surround sound but that movie was amazing for its action sequences and gunplay.

John Woo's Red Cliff is recommended for surround sound speakers.
Especially for blu-ray as it has 3 lossless audio tracks. (LPCM 7.1, DTS-HD 7.1 and Dolby Digital 7.1)

Flashpoint's not too shabby either.

Hubby's favourites to throw on the SS are The Fast and the Furious (the last scene sequence) and Days of Thunder. Ironman gives the system a work out as well...

I'd go with SPR, LOTR, or Gladiator.

Kung Fu Panda is a must. I swear my walls expand when I watch that one.

The Band of Brothers episode where they are crossing the river to capture prisoners. When they unleash the guns you hear the bullets wiz past your ears. Band of Brothers in general is pretty good for audio.

+1 for
Transformers.

Here are my personal favourites:

1. The Matrix. Hard to list all of the surround effects in this one.

2. Blackhawk Down. Pretty much non-stop shooting and explosions

3. Star Wars ep. 2. That one scene where they're flying through the asteroids and Jango Fett (IIRC) drops the sonic mines will stress your subwoofer nicely.
