I've seen neoprene laptop cases, and was wondering if this this material would protect well enough for DSLR cameras as well.

Only against minor scratches and bumps. Its not really for impacts or extended use. Put neoprene on the camera, then put the camera inside something else.

i would just pickup a real bag for it
like kasakato said it will only hold up against scratches
if its because you want something thin and less heavy to carry just throw it into a topload bag

I've seen Camera Armor in the store, but don't have any experience with it. Maybe this is what you're looking for?

dont have experience with this but i hear that some people were complaining because grit would get in between the armor and camera. this would cause wear on the paint since the sand and other misc stuffwould rub against it under the armor. not much protection for falls either...
