Let's say you were to take the pictures to a store (i.e. SDM) and print it. Do you usually crop the pictures first so that it'll print well to a 4x6" or you let the shop crop it for you?

my images come out at the right dimensions for 4x6 but I always 100% edit and go through my images before sending off to print (probably because I shoot with a dslr and shoot raw).

but still, why let them automatically crop and potentially ruin an image? Crop it yourself and get exactly what you want. It will also give you the chance to crop it even more (while still retaining the 4x6 dimensions) to exclude some parts of the photo, making the composition even better. You'll get better photos if you do it yourself.

I've never went out to print my photos simply because I think it's a waste of money to get prints. Now my mom wants some old photos to be printed and I need to figure out the best way to get it done.

+1. I go through all my photos and crop and adjust the levels before they get printed. Some photos are just way better after some touchup.

There's something nice and different about a photo album. Crop and print them. It's worth it.

Depends where you are getting it printed.
For me, I get everything smaller than 18x12 printed at Costco.

I'll grab the printer colour profiles and crop it EXACTLY to the dimensions the printer prints at...not only the ratio, but to the exact pixels.

Everything can be found at http://www.drycreekphoto.com/ for the Costco prints.

costco is wicked
for snapshots i dont bother crop unless the subject fills the entire frame. stuff from the dslr i edit and crop accordingly (non-4x6 of course)
