Hot damn. What do you do for a living?

It's not really all that much and has been building for a few years. I got the 135mm (which I'm considering selling), the memory cards, and the reader at B&H when our exchange rate was at par, and I got the original 5D (which I traded in for the 5D2) when Canon was running the exchange rebate that netted me a $1000 rebate. I got Aperture and the MBP (which is used mainly for school work) at a student discount, and the tripod is a POS that I bought for $50 at some point. The flash I bought with a gift card, and the 8GB card you see (if you see it) came with the 5D2.

It's pretty much all I spend money on, anyways. :) I've pledged not to buy anymore photography gear until September of 2010.
I've got nothing on magical up there ^^^.

So my Double Honours Math Degree I got for 48k would be considered a deal? Should I post it in the in the Hot Deals forum since it is almost 50% off. I am sure I have my degree lying around somewhere, but none of my friends have seen it in years.

As for my mortgage, the bank wanted to give me double what I asked for but I only wanted a basic house.

None of these things determines how well I can take a photo though.

But here is my canon gear:

XSI
18-55IS
55-250IS
50mm 1.8

Total spend approx 1050 + tax.

looking at getting a flash, might splurge on the 580EX, otherwise the 430 seems like a good choice. The only other type of lens I am thinking about right now is another prime 28mm f2.8 Canon, mostly for the low light performance, and being able to take the photo in the same room. (This is due to the 1.6x crop factor).

My reasoning is that I can get better glass and such in the future, but this gives me the low light performance, 95% of the wide angle I would want for landscapes and close ups, and the telephoto range when I take it outside in the summer.

I think these 'Post your gear' threads miss one good opportunity for those newer to photography to learn why you have what you have (not all of it since some people have 10-30+ pieces in their kit).

Body: Canon 350D (Rebel XT)

Lens:
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6

Cactus V2s Wireless Triggers/Recievers
Roots DV30 dSLR camera bag
Kingston 4GB CF Card
Modified my cheap tripod into a lightstand with shoot through umbrella
Deal Extreme Memory Card Reader
Deal Extreme Macro Tubes
Deal Extreme Canon Hood
Deal Extreme Remote Trigger (Jingsin?)

I must say I am a quite a cheap bastard with all my deal extreme stuff; haha.

I need a recommendation for a new tripod. Any suggestions on what head/legs to get? Budget is $100-150 and I am looking at either an integrated system or legs/head (Henrys has a 20% off sale right now). Just needs to be able to support a 40D in the future with a 70-200L with no wobble (or any hesitation as my tripod feels now with just a 350D on there).

Anyways, for those who are so confident about their activities, it's funny how they resort to personal attacks and even trolled through my posts.

Even if this post gets removed, every picture that gets posted here, of carefully arranged consumer goods whose value could feed a small city in Africa, proves my point.

jackwest, I'm curious why your posts regarding equipment are only in the Canon threads? I haven't checked the other threads, but there are people posting pics of Nikon and Pentax gear as well.

For those of us who do this professionally as full-time or on the side, we take these kinds of pictures for insurance purposes. At least I do.

The thread was started to share what kind of gear others are using in the common love of this hobby/job/profession. It can lead to discussions about why we use certain gear and can definately lead to discussions of what is being used by certain forum users to achieve certain results in the pictures that they've posted in the past.

I don't think anyone here is taking it as "show off what I have"...cause in the end it will come down to "what can you do with that gear"....and there are many threads with pictures in them to prove what great photogs we have among us sharing their experience and creativeness with others.

If someone here totes around film Canon and one lens all the time and has questions regarding photography as a hobby, all the better...we're here to encourage each other.

Your comments and perceived negativity isn't helping foster that encouragement.

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6

Out of genuine curiousity, why do you own both the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II and the Canon EF-S 18-55 F/3.5-5.6? Do they fill different roles for you?

I was thinking of getting the Tamron, and if I do, I thought I would sell my Rebel XS kit lens. I'm just starting out so I don't know too many of the differences.

I have:

Rebel XS
EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS
EF 50mm f/1.8 II

I am debating many things right now. I absolutely love my 50mm 1.8 for low light, and thought about getting the 50mm f/1.4, however I notice not that many people own it. Is it worth the price difference? I also think I need to get a 430EX II flash since my built in flash photos leave a lot to be desired.

I'm sure the reason he has the 18-55 is because it came with the camera as a kit lens. The 17-50 Blows the lens away in all regards, it is a excellent performing lens at a very low cost, only gripe I have is the Build Quality could be better, but otherwise its fantastic and very well priced.

The 50mm F1.4 is a faster lens, will give you a narrower DOF (when used at f1.4) is built much better, but not necessarily optically better. It will perform a little better with low light as it is 2/3rds of a stop faster. Personally since you already have the 50MM 1.8 I'd save your money for something else unless you really need those stops.

The built in flash in most consumer grade cameras are not that great, they work but hardly does a good job at all, the 430EX II is a great flash, well respected and a great choice.

You actually don't have every right to comment on something you have an opinion on - these forums are privately owned and you play by their (the admins) rules.

And, if you did go ahead and ask if anybody had a good experience with their Future Shop PSPs, you'd probably get a few good results.

yes be very careful... if you are only saving a marginal amount of money i would buy local so you can test them out first. i had a very bad focus problem with my 24-70. granted its only the first time ive had issues with focus but you dont want to buy it out of province if there is a chance its too soft. if you dont mind sending it in to canon and waiting up to 3 weeks then do it but i rather spend the extra to make sure it works and is sharp. buy used if you want a deal because they go for $70-$100.

in stores you can usually swing one for about $110+tax and if you're lucky $100

again i love the 17-50. sharp as heck wide open and great colour/contrast out of camera. i didnt find the built THAT bad but could use some work. iwas more annoyed with the loud as heck focus. that grinding noise was the most distracting thing ever especially during ceremonies. never realized what a difference it was to have USM until i went that route.

amazing lense though. i would be hard pressed to buy the canon equivalent unless you are really serious about photography

I was going to sell my Canon gear a couple of weeks back because I wanted a pro body (essential for shooting brick walls just in case I drop it) with FF (so I can take a pic of all the bricks).

Since then, I've added the following lenses: 15mm 2.8 FE, 24L, 45mm tilt-shift and a 50L.

My gear:
Bodies: 1Ds mk3, 1D mk3, 5D (back-up)
Lenses: 15mm fe, 24L, 35L, 50L, 85L, 100 macro, 135L, 16-35Lmk2, 24-70L, 70-200L 2.8IS
Flashes: 2 x 580ex2's, cp-e4 battery pack, quantum t5d-r /w turbo pack (off-camera lighting), nikon sb-24 (back-up to off-camera). 4 x pocket wizard plus 2's, 1 x pw multi-max32.

Naaah, I bought most of my gear new from authorized dealers (/w cps). This is the only way I can insure and claim them as an expense.

For weddings, I use the 24L + 50L for the bride getting ready, 16-35 + 70-200IS for the ceremony, 35L + 85L for formals and reception. If I had to, I can shoot an entire wedding /w the 35L + 85L combo /w 2 bodies. Real money maker combo. For personal use, I exclusively use the trinity (35/85/135)

Pretty much what Magical said. I am trying to sell it but nobody seems to be buying it; haha. I am going to be using it as my Car rig lens with my XT (once I upgrade to a 40D) so I won't need to worry about breaking the lens.

Hehe, ok so it wasn't exactly cheap but I bought decently smart, all of the main pieces I listed came in well under a couple grand for everything. The Tamron lens is the only thing I bought new from an online store, the 40D was new but off Craigslist, the two Canon lenses were bought used off Craigslist as well. Same for the 580EX, was going to buy a 430EX till i found someone selling the 580EX in almost brand new condition for the same price as the 430EX, once again on Craigslist.

I'd rather pay a little more the first time and get something I'll be satisfied with rather than pay less and then pay again to get what I wanted to begin with.

Hey Ryan, there's different levels of CPS memberships now (Silver, Gold, Platinum) - Silver is free, gold & platinum has a yearly membership fee but obviously offers better service. When I applied for CPS a year ago, all I needed was 3 professional references (from clients), 2 promotional materials (business card, brochure, website and price list, gst # is what I sent them). At the time, I sent them 2 serial #'s to 2 pro bodies and 3 'L' glass serials. I like the service; when my gear breaks, I get a loaner and turn around for repair is usually less than 5 days. But the best perk is CPS pricing.
ie. $1940 for 85L mk2 when the lowest price at the time was $2199 (aden) or $4200 for a 1D mk3 vs. $4699

If you'd like more info on this, you can e-mail cpsinquiries@canada.canon.com

This thread has made me realized that I have too much gear sitting around and not being used... I think it's time for a garage sale :(

I'm a Sony guy. Doesn't mean I'm the fanboy some of you think I may be

It's my carry-everywhere camera. I think it's the best G-series to ever come from Canon before they went all-commercial, and less photographic, with the G7 (and everything after it). I've got a Lensmate 52mm adapter on it and a 52mm B+W MRC UV filter. It's more to protect the delicate F2.0-2.8 lens, but I put a CPL on from time to time when I need to. The tilt & twist LCD is super valuable, and the top-mounted status LCD is cool.

not sure - probably need to research the market but it'll be a competitive price. also have a filter and hood and is in impeccable condition. i THINK i still have the warranty and receipt as well, so will probably sell it on the higher end of the "average price" - $400-450?

Roots DV30 dSLR camera bag
Kingston 4GB CF Card

Definately will be getting a 70-200L f/4 and no longer the Sigma. Tripod I guess I will really need to stretch my budget. Found out the recommended tripod in my other thread is a knock off and has a horrible design. Might need to cough up the cash for Bogen legs/head.

As above it is normal to have 3+ lenses.

But it is also normal to only have 1 or 2. less common, but still normal. I only have 3 lenses (use 2 90% of the time, the 3rd I use in certain situations). for the person starting out as I did almost a year ago, one lens (18-55 IS) is good enough. the 2nd lens I would recommend would be the 55-250 IS, but I would wait a bit before getting that one. I waited about 4 months, but I also knew I would be buying more gear. Just don't get sucked into spending a billion dollars on lenses and equipment unless your knowledge and budget permit.

If you buy the lenses used, and arnt in a rush and wait for good prices, you will also find they dont depreciate like bodies or pocket cams do. you can unload a used lens years later for very close to what you paid for it.

I just impulsely bought a Canon 50mm f/1.8 last week during the online Labour Day sale. I don't know if I want to keep it yet but I got it for $97 + tax after stacking two coupons. Still playing around with it but it has proven itself well in low light.

CANON A710.

http://www.usa.canon.com/app/images/PowerShot_2006/PS_A710IS/a710is_586x225.jpg

This is the best camera I use ever.
Steady Shooting All Through the Zoom Range
The elegant A710 IS is fully equipped to help busy families capture and hold onto special memories. You'll get up on the stage and down on the field with a powerful 6x optical zoom, and Canon's Image Stabilizer Technology will keep your images clear and sharp at every point in the zoom - even in low light. Excellent 7.1 megapixel resolution, easy high-tech operability and a load of creative shooting modes will keep the fun - and great images - coming.

I'm wondering if I should get the 70-200 2.8 IS. I saw it at a local shop for 1900$ instead of 2200$ at Future Shop (which I could pricematch). I might even be able to deal with the local shop to get something like 100$ worth of prints or something like that. I really hate the 1 year warranty Canon offers.

I shoot concerts in small venues with awful lighting and my 18-50 is a bit short. I wish there was something stabilized with a f/2.8 between the 17-55 and the 70-200...

70-200 2.8 Is is a solid lens....1900's nto a bad price - typically on craigs it goes for about 1700-1750 and if you get it from forum sites or stuff from the states you can knock it down to 1600-1650 due to the great fx rate.

After reading this, I remembered that I still have a A75 so dug it up and found it doesn't work. I also remembered there was a recall on it, so guess what? I get to try Canon repair all over again...for fun this time. I also found out in researching that their demonic Calgary repair facility is no more...about time (I hope the workers are all starving the the street). They now do all repairs from Mississauga, maybe they got tired of all the complaints about Calgary.

Update, just checked it out, and its definitely the defect described in their recall notice. I'll keep everyone informed of how they'll wheezel out of it of the repair.

My understanding is that the 2.8L IS has been or is shortly going to be discontinued. Will be interesting to see if they are remaking it with the new hybrid IS, or if this is just pure speculation.

True, I love my 24-105. I would think that the move to 2.8 (if it happened) would add quite a bit of weight to the 24-105 though

That thing is heavy for a walking lens, but it is oh so sharp! :D

I prefer the 24-105 for a walk around lens. I found I was stopping down the 24-70 2 stops, whereas the 24-105 was often only 1. This was with a 40d though and I have since tried the 24-70 with a 5dmkII and it seems better. It is almost as if the extra weight on the 5d balances it better.

And my gear currently - all canon lenses

5dmkII
2 x 40d
10-22
24-105
50 1.8
85 1.2
100mm macro
70-200 2.8IS
300mm f4
1.4 tc

Considering selling the 2 40ds and 10-22 shortly. May also sell the 50mm as the 85 is the best portrait lens I have ever used. That could free up some cash for a 14mm 2.8 seeing as I do not have a wide angle lens for the full frame.

I might even consider getting an adaptor and a Carl Zeiss prime lens for the wide angle instead.
