It appears that Google will be hiring interns for this summer. Can anybody verify this?

Why would they hire at Ryerson when UofT is right around the corner.

When Waterloo is just 1.5 hours away.

Not that I know of. Haven't received any emails advertising it nor is there any posting on the careers program. But this is from the business standpoint :P

Google wouldn't just hire at a specific university, especially Ryerson. I'm sure if you have good marks and the employer likes you it wouldn't really matter if you went to Ryehigh or Waterloo.

Google has been laying off staff the past few months...

Don't be surprised if Google isn't hiring (very many) students the next few semesters.

They are indeed hiring for interns at this time. Though they don't usually hire at specific schools, I think there would be some biased shown towards Waterloo or UofT. It's up to you to show that you're just as capable. While grades do play some part in getting an interview, the interview itself is purely down to brain power and very little on experience and what you did and what you know. More about how you use what you know to solve stuff. Good luck!

Assuming Google's business does not shrink, I would actually expect them to hire more interns now that they are laying off full time staff. It's just a cost saving maneuver to get the same amount of job done but at a lower cost to them.

Wow, lots of misinformation here.

They will hire you if you're good regardless of what university you went to, BUT active recruiting only happens in UofT and Waterloo in Ontario AFAIK.

They have been no layoffs. They are not renewing contracts for their contractors. The whole idea behind having contractors is that you can easily get rid of them once the contract is done.

Once again, no full time staff are being laid off. As for interns, they are still hiring, but it's essentially a hiring freeze for full time.

I'm just assuming, I haven't been keeping up with news. But it would just make sense that even if they were laying off full times, they should be hiring MORE interns, not less.

lol.
I guess they wont hire from MIT or Waterloo because they would obviously have to pay them higher wages than what they would have to pay Ryerson students. I am not saying that MIT and Waterloo students may b better than Ryerson students. Just that cuz MIT and Waterloo are "better known" and ranked highly by certain institutions, their students would get a better pay.

You're kidding right? This is something you made up?

Large companies usually have a set rate for what they pay their interns. The company I work for determines co-op pay by how many credits they have completed towards their degree.

lol yes yes absolutely. kidding.
i dunno y i said that. I am not even qualified enough to comment on something like that.
my bad.
yes it depends on "number of credits completed towards degree" as you say and on "work term level":

The cuts are here, and hiring will be reduced: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/changes-to-recruiting.html#links
