OPTIONAL INDUSTRIAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (IIP): Third year students with CLEAR academic standing may opt to enroll in the IIP. If hired by one of the corporations who intend to provide such internship placements, they will spend a period of 12-16 months, from May to September of the following year, as engineering interns at the corresponding corporations. After the completion of the industrial internship, students return to the academic program to complete their final year of studies. Enrollment in the IIP extends the program to five years.

The IIP students enroll in the course WKT 99A/B: Industrial Internship Program for Electrical and Computer Engineering Students during the academic year in which they work as interns. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

I'm also at Ryerson and I also have co-op/internship for my program which is required though, we require 400 hours of co-op before we can graduate. Pretty much I have it in 1st and 2nd semester of year 3, and during these classes(one hour every 2 weeks), we learn to spiff up our resume, cover letters, and find potential employers. Then after 3rd year, during the summer we all get internship placements based on where we applied.

You might be able to do it earlier, I got an internship placement during my 2nd year, which was great, got tons of experience and it paid great($16 an hour) compared to other student jobs. Though only 50% of it counted towards my internship hours since I was supposed to do it 3rd year and not 2nd.
