i heard from my friends that if a student does not take ENGL 112 for the first year of engineering(or any other faculties) will receive a GPA Penalty of around -5%, but i went to the engeering dep. and they said there "might" be a chance of GPA deduction..aw im soo coufused now...
oh and also if this is true, and i chose to take ENGL 112 in the summer of first year, does that still count as taking Engl first year? which means i wont lose 5% GPA....

thanks for ur answers :)

Since I am not in applied science, I am not sure if it's the same as in science. One question for you though, why didn't you take ENGL in your first year? Is it because you haven't met the prerequisite? Or you just don't want to take it until you really have to? I think if you take ENGL 112 in summer and obtain a passing grade, then you should be fine. However, ask the adviser just for sure.

Also, take a look at this: Bachelor of Applied Science Degree Requirements (http://www.students.ubc.ca/calendar/index.cfm?tree=12,195,272,30). It states "Students admitted directly from secondary schools are required to take English in their first year if eligible to do so. To be eligible, students must have met the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) requirement." I notice there's another english test for engineering student which is Engineering Communication Competency Test, you will need to take that at the end of first year though.

You might also want to see this: Communication Requirement (http://www.students.ubc.ca/calendar/index.cfm?tree=12,195,272,29). As long as you have the LPI requirement, then you should be fine. I don't see anywhere mentions the 5% penalty though, you should ask the your adviser.

LOL I know. I've been there too. Those two English courses were just like nightmare to me. Don't worry, you will survive. By the way, you do realize summer course is fairly short, about 1 and half months in length, right? You will have to read those assigned books, write essays and prepare the presentation in a lot shorter time than you do in winter or spring term. Imagine first class starts on Monday, and you will have to hand in the first essay on Friday. Wow... how fun is that? I don't want to scare you, but.......... good luck with that.......

What you do in ENGL 112 highly depends on your prof. I know some profs only required reading of short stories, in class essays/summaries, and one take home essay. Others had a lot of discussions/presentations. Look on www.ratemyprofessors.com, and see which prof you think is best. Its very unlikely you'll have to read a novel in ENGL 112.
