Have any of you done an international exchange program with your university/college before. Where did you go? What was your experience like? Share you experiences here.

Not quite an exchange program, but my family was with the homestay program with Algonquin & I believe Carleton University for around 19 years. Same concept as exchange program, except we didn't send anyone there, we just had people from other countries living with us for a while while they were in college/university, usually taking ESL.

Overall it was pretty hit or miss. We had some students that were great, and we had some that were just awful. Some would steal from us, damage things and not replace it, would use all our internet bandwidth downloading movies, etc. My parents just stopped doing the program this past summer.

My friend went on exchange for a year to Hong Kong; he's coming back in July.

My advice for you: DO IT.

Pros:
-Looks good on CV (international & foreign aptitude)
-Great experience
-Personal growth
-Fun, fun, fun, especially if you're escaping -50C temperatures!

Cons:
-Might be expensive depending on where you go

A lot of schools have partnerships with other universities, "bilateral partners". Look into them; you pay your own school's tuition even if you're going to study halfway around the world. Often you need recommendation letters, statement of purposes... etc. So get chummy with your profs right away!

I'm going to apply for a semester abroad next year. ;)

I know people who did it and they liked it overall.
Depends on where you end up going, how easy you can adapt but most of all, how open minded you are.
I looked into it and was wanting to do it but in the end the cost of what the EU asked for was waay more then I could justify. I would've done it had been lucky enough to have rich folks who could help me out, but it wasn't the case. In any case I'll have to travel as much as I can and learn and experience things that way.

If you have the $$$ I would say go for it.
