Sold out online for my postal code, but I saw this in store at the location near Taunton and Garden in Whitby. Not a bad deal for a 500gb external with 5 year warranty.

costco is selling the WD My Book 640 GB for 114.99.

Which is a better deal?

Not sure what the physical drive differences are but the WD is 1 year warranty versus 5 on the Seagate.

I haven't read many good things about the Seagates, and the warranty doesn't matter that much to me. I'd rather have a 1 year warranty on a drive that is less likely to fail than to get a new unit without my data.

I have a 500gb MyBook Home from Costco for the last year with no problems, and a 500gb MyBook World Edition heavily modded also with no issues.

$99 is a good price for a 500G external drive, however, based on my experience, I will stay away from Freeagent.

I actually returned my 250G Freeagent today for replacement. The drive was only functional for me for the first 1week or so but then can not be recognized by all 5 of my computer systems.

There are two things that I do not like about these drives:
1. The shell is plastic. One can imagine poor heat control when the drive is working.
2. Plug and play,no power switch. So the only way to stop the drive is to unplug the power from it or the power supply from outlet. Inconvenient, and potentially dangerous for the drive when it's running.

Mod.s feel free to modify as this is a deal forum other than a hardware forum.

I've been using Seagate drives for years and have had good luck with them, but as of late I keep hearing that their drives are having trouble. Thankfully WD seems to be pretty decent. http://**************/img/1856/y08m1110mhmd/2.gif

I got 3 500GB 7200.11 seagate last year and one already failed.

In order to get the warranty replacement, I have to pack it and send it back with track number.... And the worst thing is, you have send back FIRST to get the replacement.

I think I will go WD next time. Even that's 3yrs vs 5 yrs warranty.
