I was stumbling around the web looking for hosting deals when I came upon mention of Netfirms hosting

I also did a whole bunch of reading on them and whatever complaints they received in the past have been fixed (such as a new control panel) amongst other things readers have commented on. So far so good with my account.

***Its $20 USD, but that works out to about under $24 CAD***

I have been with Netfirms for a couple years now and can vouch for their improvements.

As a side note, this deal isn't new (infact it is always on-going). Last year it was $10, this year its $20.

Every year I just sign up a new account, get my 2 free domains and transfer my configuration over (versus paying the $10/month for the year after)

Old news... There are previous posts on this here in RFD... But, hey, it's always good to get a refresher post.

Oh yes, I believe the $10 a year deal is still alive (2 domains, hosting, etc, etc)

It show as $10, but when you click through it is $20.

So I want to keep my two domains from this deal last year. What is the easiest way to do this? I can't renew them online, since you can only renew your plan online (which is $120+, something that I wouldn't pay). Renewing the plan online does renew your domains though. If I create a new account, I am assuming that I can transfer my current domains to it and then renew them there, correct? Or is there a way for me to renew my current domains at godaddy or somewhere else and just transfer to wherever I end up with hosting? I just want to make sure that I don't end up losing my domains since they are up in a few weeks.

The $10 deal doesn't work. It does show $10 if you click on the link, but it becomes $20 afterwards. The MAC code doesn't work. $20 USD is the cheapest that I can find. Again, I'm hoping someone will post a better deal. Thx!

if you create a new netfirms acct they will likely charge you to transfer the domains to another account. im pretty sure about that but you might need to read the fine print on it.

you could however transfer them to another provider but you will likely charge you as well. depending on the company it will usually cost you $10-20 for the transfer plus a domain renewal.

If you need to transfer get the transfer code from you provider as you will need to enter it with your new provider when you do the transfer. also remember to change the dns servers on your old provider to the new provider's dns servers so you domain doesn't go down for a week as the transfers usually take 7-10 days.

hope this helps.

I just wanted to thank OP for the post. We had purchased 1 yr hosting for ~ $125 last year at 25% off. They refused to give us a discount on renewal ... I decided to take a look at RFD before renewing at full price ... I was able to create a new account and transfer for $30!! They just lost 95 bucks on not doing an auto-renewal with discount!!!

ddechene,

How do you do this ?
I am with them for 2 years and after the 1st year, had to fork out the full $120 per year charge as I was afraid of loosing the website that I built.

My second year is going to expire this month and would love to do what you did.

Netfirms, is slow and unreliable. I've been with them for 2 years, I'm pretty unsatisfied, but too lazy to find another hosting.

I did the same thing. I signed up a new account, got the two free domain names, and transferred my two domains from last year over. I still have to renew my domains from last year, but they are $10 each, and I think that netfirms has some coupons floating around for domain renewal.

My only question was whether or not you have to call to take off the automatic renewal from the old webhosting deal. I don't think so, since those domains are under a new webhosting plan.

I took advantage of this $20 deal a few weeks ago (too bad I missed the $10 deal) and now have a very simple drupal website hosted with them that I am currently developing. I am generally happy with them so far, but I have to say that it is indeed slow to load my page. Not unbearably slow ... but noticably slow for sure. It's fine for development ... but once the site goes live I will probably need something better ... especially if I get any kind of viewership going. With a good viewership, I could definitely see the site timing out or slowing to a crawl on a regular basis if not all the time. I wish a got the awesome deal that dreamhost was offering early this year ... I hear they are a bit better / faster.

In the end though, I think if you want to have a high traffic site with excellent response and load times ... you will need to pay significantly more than this. This deal has its purpose ... but buyer beware :)

Did you guys have to pay GST on your orders paid in USD using Canadian credit card? (I bought $20 hosting special with one .ca and one .com domain).

Ive been pretty happy with these guys for a year now, just renewed. Quick to respond to tickets, pretty darn cheap, they even renewed me using the discount I got for my first year. The domain name is free, EVERY YEAR.

If you're lazy and decide to simply renew with Netfirms without setting up another $20 account, you could use code: "coolsavings" to receive 25% off. There's also some other codes for business accounts: biz09....

i'm curious what everyone uses their domain for.

i was going to set up a photo album at one point but then i just ended up posting my pics on facebook and linking from facebook. so now i just pay money every year to keep my domain but i have no website and can't think of what to do with my domain.

Domain names are fun. For business, I have quite a few for use as nameservers and therefore with basically no content on. For personal use, I have one dedicated to my dog. Of course, these are just the tip of an iceberg.
