Last night, my PSU (Power Up 800watter) suddenly decides to spin, god knows how many times faster. 5x I'm guessing? It's so loud, it's giving me a head ache.
I'm guessing the built in thermo is busted inside causing it to think it's over heating.
So it's under 6 months old and has 3 year warranty.
Here's the rant. I don't have backup PSU and of course, it's gonna take them god knows how long to get it repaired. So I'm screwed anyway.
This PSU has two fans. I'm gonna crack it open and disconnect one of the fans and go from there, thus voiding warranty.

why not just get a new psu, preferably a name brand one.

Try blasting some air duster through it first - may just be dusty inside.

I think this Power Up cost me over $100. I can't even find another 800watter for this price nowadays, even for no names.
Yeah, I'll open up and check for dust and stuff before disconnecting fan.
Or rewire 12v fan(s) to somewhere else. Plus, I refuse to spend another $100 on a PSU, espcially with no job security! :-(
Warranty on PSU is useless unless people have spares or spare good computer. lol

Most warranties become void if you open the PSU. Just spray air in and vacuum at the same time. If that doesn't work, just go out and buy a cheap PSU to use while you wait for your replacement (and then use as a backup after), or get a good PSU and use the RMA as your backup.

Yeah, I would rather get another PSU and disconnect those 100 video cards you've got installed for awhile until you get the 800W one back.

My conclusion is that the thermo sensor is messed up.
I actually only have 1 8800GT. So buying a cheap PSU wouldn't really matter but I said screw it anyway. I opened the PSU to inspect it, breaking the warranty seal. There's nothing I could do except disconnect fan and tap power from another 12v plug. Everything is now normal again with the help of a 30ohm resistor.
But I messed up. I put the PSU back in the wrong way - screw holes don't align anymore. In order to take out PSU, CPU heat sink needs to be removed. To fasten CPU heat sink back on, I need to use both hands and the MB needs to come out of the case too.
I'll make things right in the summer and hook up the second PSU fan and give computer a good dust cleaning too.
I refuse to fork out $$$ for backup PSU while RMA'ing original PSU. IN this case, I'm a typical RFD'er. LOL
