My friend went to his local Sears and found an Open box Toshiba 42RV530U 42" 1080P HDTV listed for $999.99 but the sales person offered him 35% off but will be final sales...ie no return/exchange.

He asked me what do I think? All I knew is the 42RV530U was replaced by a newer model 42RV535U earlier this year. The sales person told him it was a return unit but I think it may be a display unit, the sales person will set it up for him to test, he is going back after work today so anyone can offer any idea what he should look for when testing the unit and if $650 is a good price for this TV? 1. Check the mfg date at the back of the panel (to have an idea how old).

2. Look for excessive signs of dust behind the top part of the vent grilles which MAY mean it's a store display...$300's more like it if so. Imagine 24/7 at torch mode.

3. 1-2yr warranty starting from day of purchase.

4. Have it plugged in and turned on or 1 wk full refund term.

THEN it's a good buy otherwise why would your friend buy someone else garbage/reject?

Look for dead / stuck pixels!... and any signs of burn in if it's a display model.
