The Samsung SH-S223F is in your price range, and looks decent: http://www.cdr-info.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=24562&PageId=26

I used to only buy LG burners. Since 2004 I've wound up buying about 6 of them in total.

3 still run ok, other 2 (both dual layer, same model GSA-H22N) started giving give off a ton of read errors and making coasters within 1 month of purchase. The oldest (and most expensive one) decided to stop burning any kind of rewritables and CDs at the two year point.

I switched to Pioneer burners only. Have 3 112-d's and a 212-d and never a single problem with any of them.

I got a Plextor PX-760A - once you go Plextor for optical drives, you never go back to a Pioneer, LG or Samsung ever again.

Yeah, shame Plextor stopped making their own drives.

If I were to buy a new drive today, I would probably get the Pioneer 216 and flash it with one of those firmwares that support Labelflash/DiscT@2.

BTW, Dolphin has said that nobody is really making quality writers anymore, so you can probably just buy whatever, and it wouldn't make much difference.

After doing some reading, do you mean you would be able to burn an image onto any disk, or would it have to be a lightscribe disk?

Over the last 15 years, I've had 1 sony, 1 acer, 3 pioneers, 1 nec, 2 liteons.

The last 2 are liteon, although the last is the liteon, it's noisy, we burn only at the slowest speed, think it's 4X at DL. My older liteon's lowest speed is 6X.

I never burn at the fastest speed, and always have vfy data checked in IMGburn.

The pioneers lasted about 2-4 years. I've never abused it, gave it 30 mins to cool down between burns, burned about 4-5 dvd+r's per month.

Think the average life of the burners are about 3-5 years. My first liteon has lasted 3 years so far. It's fairly quiet and tray when ejected has been very smooth compared to the newest, 2yr old, as it noisy and spits out the tray.

Bottomline, read the reviews, see which one has low read errors, and low burn data errors at your burn speed. No use in buying an expensive drive if you're not gonna burn at the fastest speed.

I like my liteon, I was sceptical at first, but after owning one, I'd recommend it. You can't go wrong with pioneer. NEC stopped making drives, as I've never seen new ones here after a few years. I can't say anything about LG as I never owned one.

Lightscribe and Labelflash are two different things, although similar. Labelflash does require special discs, but mostly exists outside of North America (eg. good luck find LF discs here). Personally, I prefer Labelflash, as it does not require some crappy "driver" software.

DiscT@2 is a sub-set of Labelflash, which was developed by Yamaha a long time ago. It burns patterns on the info side of the disc. Unfortunately, Yamaha are being pricks, and you can only use it with DVD Rs (you can only tattoo CD-Rs on Yamaha writer(s), all of which are no longer being made).

i'd never buy pioneer, i've had 2 111d's crap out on me. i know a lot of people love them, but it's the only burner ever to crap out on me.

Both my benq's developed sticky tray syndrome (where the tray won't open unless you press the button several times).

I had a Pioneer 111 a while back... it developed cache problems in a matter of months.

I replaced with a samsung 203b which was really good for about a year, then developed read problems.

A year isn't bad for me with a burner, so I replaced with a samsung 223Q which is working great (I burn way too much.. I don't seem to get much more than a year out of burners).

I'd say that if your burn alot of media your ususaly good to get a year out of a burner if your casualy burn a couple discs a month you should get 2 years out of it.

I have to say now that I have tried lightscribe its definatly left me with the idea that printed dvd media is the real way to go especialy price & availibilitywise. So far been basing that view on some memorex 16x matte print surface I got around x-mas from FS for $11.99 for a 15 pack. So far on my Canon i6700D it looks good, but definatly think the gloss would look sweet. :)

So look for the LG GH22NS30 sata drive, was impressed when I could burn 16x verbatim media at 24x on it :)

I gave up on DL years ago.
Here's no plausible reason why the media needs to be so damned expensive.
Prices should have tumbled years ago.

Pioneers are the bomb. I had one that was slot loaded but it chewed up one of my DVDs and I had to chuck it. Fool is me for putting a fractured media. It totally shredded it beyond this universe.

I'll still put in my nod for Pioneer because they're cool.

Another vote for LG or possibly Samsung.

Pioneers I had in the past, died before the LG drives.

I guess BenQ is out of the market now but my 1620 is still going strong (IDE) after many years and tons of DVDs. I have a 1640 but it isn't nearly as good (noisy seek which is annoying).

I would buy samsung for sata, only because it is usually a bit cheaper than the other brands and is getting decent reviews. -sg
