View Full Version : Elect Today's RETAIL HDMI cable finds...

For those of you that don't know Maxi pretty much = RCSS. Seems they're the same company or owned by the same company.
So I was in Maxi today looking for HDMI to DVI cables (yeah I know don't hold my breath). At first I saw typical HDMI cable prices from $20 and up to $40 or $50. Walked a little more over in the aisle and I found more HDMI cables but with the following much better prices (all gold plated cables):
C2 Tech brand HDMI v1.3 for PS3 6ft $10
Audiovox brand 6ft $10
Century Concept Digital 10ft with both tags of $15 and $20 (try take advantage of the barcode scanning policy ;) )
RCA 6ft I think was $18
The 2 best looking cables are the C2 Tech and the Century Concept Digital. They both have really sleek looking, solid construction. Very smooth stylish finish on the ends.
Jan 8th:
Zellers in Atwater/Plaza Alexis-Nihon in Mtl, QC has the following HDMI cables.
Chateau brand 3ft HDMI $7
Chateau brand 12ft HDMI $13 <<= I think that's a hot price
Philips 12ft HDMI v1.3a $45

Some decent finds for retail, but I highly recommend monoprice.com - I bought a DVI->HDMI cable there recently and I'm very happy with it.

I've never had a problem ordering from monoprice. Shipping is affordable too.
Lots of choices for cables, those two are just the most popular hot deals. You can get any type of HDMI cable you could ever want from these guys.
That said, if you need a cable immediately, the OP deals are pretty good for retail 6ft cables @ $10. That's a really good price in a store.

to both of you we all know monoprice and online shops are cheaper. This posting is to help those that need cables immediately and can't wait for shipping or don't want to wait for shipping.

It might look cheaper, but 4.74 + 3.95(shipping) = $8.68 USD x exchange rate is well over 10 bux.
I'd say its a pretty good deal for retail, especially for the convenience.

+1 I wouldn't pay more than $5 for a 3ft cable, it hardly reaches anywhere so it's less versatile. Meant for really closely placed devices.
He didn't have RETAIL in the thread title before. Not threadcrapping, just talking about monoprice for those who are still unaware of the usual insane markup of retail cables.
yeah I realized after all the monoprice promoting that I'd need to add retail for them to understand lol. I wasn't necessarily posting about the cheapest possible price but the cheapest I've found, and hopefully others too, in retail walk-in stores.
I was tempted to pick up one myself but I only need an HDMI to DVI right now and it's not urgent so I didn't. Plus I'm getting a $5 one from NCIX.

The C2 Tech brand cables look very similar to that picture. I wonder if C2 Tech and Century Concept Digital are just rebranded Monsters? Then again I bet Monsters are simply rebranded from some other brand anyway.
Still as another user said $28 is not worth 3ft. You get a pass for Monsters if it was a 6ft cable.
I wish someone could find pics of the ones I posted because I can't find any at all

My cousin had a HDMI>DVI (with a DVI>HDMI adapter) as a spare which he gave to me when I got my PS3, and I only need a regular HDMI (although I suppose I could play PS3 on the 22" computer monitor in my room if I ever needed to). Jack sprat, could eat no fat...

Wow.. that is not right. I'ver ordered from mono 4 times now and everytime it takes between 7 - 10 days. I wonder if CP is having some problems (shock!) because we've been waiting for an international package (not from mono) that was shipped via air for about as long as you've been waiting.
Anyways, if you can be patient then you can't beat mono. But I also understand how it is when you buy a new electronic gadget. :) That's why I always order like 4 HDMI cables at a time.

For those set on purchasing Monster cables, if you're in the GTA:
3ft Monster HDMI cable for $19.95 (http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=017797&cid=CA.383.359)
4ft Monster HDMI cable for $29.95 (http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=020751&cid=CA.383.359)
There seems to be lots of stock on the 3 footer, not so much on the 4 foot. Not available online either.
Oh, and +1 for monoprice. I use a combination of those and C2 from RCSS (when I need one NOW)

Be very careful with those hot priced storage cards from online especially if sold out of China. There's a sticky up already about counterfeit storage/memory cards. Example symptoms of counterfeit units; they don't fit smoothly into the slot. They get stuck or require trimming a fraction of a milimeter to fit smoothly. Easy data loss/corruption, typos anywhere, fractional lifespan if any at all.
The HDMI topic never ends, we all are ripped by those criminal retailers...
Not me because personally I'd never spend $50 on a popular data cable. It just seemed so wrong to me right from the start.

I picked up a combo package of 10' HDMI cable + USB A to Mini-USB cable for $9.94, marked down from $19.99 or so from RCSS in Ottawa. Remember this is 10', not the standard 6'. The package is marked for PS but HDMI and USB are standards so it does not matter. The HDMI is certified for 1.3a. The SKU from the bill says 71171980900 and it matches the UPC.

Here is a web report/video done by the CBC on the value of high price/low priced cables. It was previously posted by a RF'er but I thought this re-post may provide some valuable info to those looking for cables.
http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/2008/02/20/packing_the_deal/
(I have purchased from monoporice and love the quality and have not been charged any duties/additional fees by keeping under the $25 limit recommended by some other members)

I have the same question too, so if someone could reply in the thread or PM me as well, that would be great.
Thanks!
Pretty sure you don't need anything special for the Rogers HD PVR. I think most HDMI cables sold are at least version 1.2, which should be enough.
For Blu-Rays, if you want to decode the hi def audio using your receiver, you'll need at least 1.3. But, those are almost just as cheap as 1.2 (as evidenced in this thread) and will likely get cheaper.

There is no difference betweena 1.2 and a 1.3 cable, other than the 1.3 cable has been "1.3 certified". 99% of the time a 1.2 cable will do 1.3 content just fine.

For anyone who is living in GTA or in the York Region (just north of GTA). Philips Canada's head office has an employee store, which now is OPEN to public. They have many different kinds of A/V cable on sale there, and the best deal is on their HDMI cables.
24K gold plated HDMI cables, 6" or 12": $4.99
HDMI to DVI, 12": $4.99
Optical audio cable, 12": $4.99
Component cables, 12": $2.99
And a lot more. All Philips brand, those one used to sale for over $30 in Costco.
Their store hour is Mon-Fri: 3pm to 7pm, Sat: 9am to 1pm
They are located at the South-East corner of Hwy 404 and Major Mackenzie Drive.
Address:
281 Hillmount Road
Markham, Ontario L6C 2S3
I am not sure how long they will remain open to the public, they started that since a few weeks before Christmas and they were opened just to their employees before. Last Friday (Jan 9, 09) I went, they were still opened to the public and they still handing out flyer telling people they are opened to the public. Go help them cleaning up their warehouse.
BTW, I don't work there and I only found out they are having a good deal on HDMI cables. So I may not have enough knowledge to answer some of your questions.

I went there after work today (Jan 12th) and can confirm everything was there. The HDMI cables are 1.3a. The guy told me they would be getting 6 foot hdmi soon, so I figured I'd wait for those because 12 feet is too much clutter for me.
The cables are in those indestructible blister packs, so that should be a good sign that the cables are new.

Then you're just plain stupid:

But Monster cables are made with the super magical copper with all sorts of poorly defined and loosely used scientific terms thrown in. Everyone who pays $200 for a cable will tell you that they see and hear the difference. If they couldn't tell the difference, they would be stupid, wouldn't they? It's just trickery that they can't prove their sense of difference in a controlled manner.
It's similar with speaker wire. Only the gauge matters and even then it generally only matters in generally extreme lengths. The Amazing Randy posted a reward for a recognized audiophile to pass his test of high end audio speaker wire versus normal wire. He never had to pay the reward. Another Internet user tested high end audio cables versus power cord from the local hardware store. No one could tell the difference.
It's a shame really that stores like FS and BB prey on people who don't know better. They have become the home of $200 HDMI cables, $100 memory cards, and $50 camera cases, but they want you to trust them and buy the warranty?
Paying for convenience is one thing but I often hear the floor people spread misinformation to customers. I wonder how intentional it is. Surely someone in these organizations knows better?

for those who don't know anything about monster cables,
Splice them up or unscrew the head of a s-video cable. You'll see they're just regular cables with plastic casing that monster paid. The head is also monster labelled.
Moving on to HDMI cables.....you get the point.
I've had monster s-video, optical cables before. No diff, I didn't pay full price on them a few years ago. Spent $20 on them
Prices have really come down on cables.
I bought a few HDMI cables, 6ft by belkin for $10 each from sig's. I didn't wanna wait for monoprices and the fact that our loonie took a dive that may not return to par.
No matter what sales pitch some dude gives you, there's no diff as long as the cable quality are equal. Read the fine print on the cable, ie cable gauge, awg xxx.
That's tell you the thickness of the cable. Make sure your cables are shielded to prevent interference.

Got a question. OP was mentioning HDMI to DVI which happens to be what I'm looking for. Is it better / cheaper to get a HDMI to DVI cable, or just an adaptor?
Doesn't matter, there's tons of combos that can work out good or bad financially. See in summer there was a 6ft HDMI male to DVI male. Perfect for HD players to PC monitors. It was $12 reg. $20/$25 on ncix. I didn't buy it. Now I bought an HDMI male to DVI female also 6ft from NCIX for $5/$6 reg. $12/$15. I forgot back in summer that my LCD came with a DVI male male. So that $6 ncix HDMI male to DVI female can connect together with my DVI male male and I'll get the same display result connecting these 2 cables vs HDMI male to DVI male cable.
Another option is I found/ordered an HDMI to DVI adaptor (not the long cord) from DealExtreme for $3/$4. It's a 24+5 or 24+4 adaptor. Meaning it handles both Analog and Digital and I think supports Dual Link but not sure how DL works with an adaptor like this.
You just have to plan out what you want to do and watch what you spend on the pieces. I think a single cable is easier and more portable/reusable but if you already have an expensive really long cable then just an adaptor would be better use of money.

You have no idea how "smart" and "pushy" those sales in FS could be. I worked there for a few months before, lucky not a sales, just a repair techie, and I had witnessed many sales tricks there. One sales managed to sale a customer both Bell and Roger High-speed internet packages with her new purchase of a computer. The customer had no clue about internet hook up, so the sales took advantage and told her she would need both packages to get the maximum speed connection. So, after that instance, I have no doubt about those big-fat liars' abilities on selling overprice junks to clueless customers.

You got that right. I worked at a Future Shop a couple years ago, and the nonsense some of these guys would spit out to sell their wares was disgusting. Lying about laptop repairs, the benefits of higher-priced cables, and basically implanting in your head that you are buying a crappy product, so you need the warranty on it. I love technology, and I would love to work in technology, but never again at a Future Shop.

What you quoted was the version differences of the HDMI standard. That does not mean that the manufacturing of a cable is any different. There "may" be no differences in tolerances involved for certification (of the cable), so unless there are different pins and additional wires, I "think" BRUNES statement is probably right.
Where the standard comes in to play is, does your TV/BluRay/<other device> with HDMI provide HDMI 1.2 or 1.3a features.

Not knowing of the philips store , this seemed like a good deal.
(I also picked up some 1gig usb flash sticks for $2.00 but I think they are gone).
Anyway, there were quite a few in a display near the electronics section. Since I had just purchased one of the zellers ones for my new philips dvd player, I no longer needed em.

By the way, anybody tried the HDMI cables with a bluray player to a receiver capable of decoding lossless audio yet? I'm interested to know if they are really version 1.3 as the employees calim, coz the packaging and the cable itself makes no mention what version it is.

I had a phillips hdmi cable that I bought from sam's when I got the 46" lcd tv SL model for 999, the seemed fine, no diff, i returned the cables cuz it wasn't worth the $30.
I'm happy with my 9.99 belkins from sig's.

Thanks to the member who posts the Philips store deal. I manage to pick up a bunch of 6 ft HDMI cables for $5 each. Even cheaper than buying online. I did not buy any 12 ft since it is too long for me and it is not packaged (6 ft version is in Philips retail packaging)
Great deal. I was there this morning and picked up a HDMI cable and optical cable. Both for $5. They have a whole bunch of other cables too for cheap; component, s-video, audio, etc. Plus they sell other Philips products too; divx player for $25, TVs, monitors etc. Thanks OP for this posting.

In a previous thread, people were commenting on $20 being the magic number for custom's duties/taxes.
Monoprice filled out my paper work accurately, and printed my total (but it was only $19 US). So could be hit or miss if you get charged at customs or not.
Not sure where the product is made, may not have to pay duties.

Hi all,
I'm new, but I have read that people are quite happy with monoprice for cables, etc.
Check out this site: www.onlybestrated.com
Great prices, and if you live in the GTA there is a pick-up location in Brampton/Malton border. (Avoid shipping costs)
I bought a wall-mount there (in a monoprice package) for $100, which would cost about 250-300 elsewhere. Also picked up HDMI and Toslink cables cheap, and a power surge thing.
Worth a look...I have it bookmarked!

According CBC's "Marketplace" testing.
The most expensive model they found in-store was a Monster cable costing upwards of $250. They tested that against a generic one online for just $12, including shipping. There is no difference in quality.

People dont normally stock up on HDMI cables. Who knows when they will buy a new TV or HDMI compatible unit next.
They dont ship within 24 hours and arrive the next day. Unless you ship with Worldwide express which is $30+ for shipping alone which will kill the deal.

I can go downtown and get a 12ft cable for $13 I'm sure monoprice can't send it to me that fast for that cheap. Also when my adaptor arrived I had found out that moment that I ordered the wrong thing online (got an adaptor instead of a cable) and it was that moment I found out I needed something way longer than 6ft for my needs. Right now NCIX has 15ft for $15 and shipping is free if I toss it on my existing order although that has nothing to do with retail.
You're still forgetting about emergencies though (cable breaks, someone lends you a device on short notice, you received a device as a gift, etc).
Also in my case not having a credit card I pay with paypal. Takes 8 business days for paypal to clear sending a payment then I have to wait transit time for the cable to arrive. WAY simpler to pick up a cheap cable in store and get to use it the same month lol. Still if I find I'm able to wait the 2-3wks before needing to use the cable I will order from monoprice.

To all you monoprice promoters  ok a 15ft HDMI cable at monoprice is $5+ and shipping is $5+ making it $11.66USD. NCIX has 15ft cables for $16CAD for the past 2 weeks now. So yeah I could save a few dollars (what like $3CAD  ) with monoprice but with NCIX I get a higher quality (or at least a nicer looking) cable and 50pts for leaving a review. If I find more items to order off monoprice then I'll get their cable but at the moment NCIX has my preference. Too bad there's no cheap 15ft on DealExtreme.

Hello Deal Seekers,
Sayal Electronics sell surplus HDMI cables at a reasonable price. 6' @ 11 to $15, for Certified HDMI 1.3b standard, which is good for 10gb Bandwidth.
They have many boxes full of different kinds, just make sure that you get the better ones that are 1.3b or 1.3a at the minimum certification.
Return policy is not the best, 7 days for unopened stock. Staff is NOT too helpful, they behave as if you they don't understand what you want. Check there website for store locations.

" = inch
' = feet
12" = 12 inches
12' = 12 feet
I'm sure everyone knows what you mean but you should keep it in mind for notational accuracy. You wouldn't want to order a cable that shows 12" expecting a 12ft cable to arrive only to find it's 12 inches aka 1ft ;)

Good deal for my purposes, since both my parents and in-laws need a TOSLink digital hookup for their HTIB units, and one also needs another HDMI cable. I was thinking about ordering the three cables from MonoPrice, but this deal is much better.

Stupid question time:
If I'm not sure I need a 3 ft or 6 ft, I'm better off just paying $1 more for the 6' then I can just wrap up the unused portions easily if I have leftover?

Those PS3 HDMI cables are pretty bad. I have one and had many problems. Changed with one from Walmart and all problems gone

I've never had a problem with any of them, even at 1080p - though I do keep them on 720p/1080i sources just to make sure (they are only certified for 1080i), and use higher-quality cables for 1080p links.
The deal here is that you *also* get an optical TOSlink cable (which I needed - RCSS sells these for $14.99 a shot - overpriced I know...) along with the HDMI cable, and at the time of purchase, there was no tax at RCSS.

Sure, but as 6' is overkill you might want to check out the 4' and 5' HDMI cables at Monoprice - I bought 6 (3 of each) and replaced the old 6' ones and now I have a lot more space in the back of my TVs.

Maybe but if all you need is a working HDMI cable you better get something else. My HDMI cable have mechanical problems, the connector is loose and it keeps disconnecting.

Factory Direct has a coupon currently: 2 3ft HDMI cables for $9.99. Not super hot, but the cheapy ones at MP, with shipping, come to about the same price. Picked up 2 yesterday in London, thickness is pretty nice... right length for me, to run to the autoswitch.

For those in or near the Mississauga area, I posted this (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9091424#post9091424) in another thread there back in July.
"I went to Angel Electronics at 1515 Matheson Blvd. E. in Mississauga today and they had hdmi cable in 5 ft. and 6 ft. lengths, both for the same price at $4.99. Many thanks to User Name for mentioning this store back in May in the "HDMI 6ft Philips $4.99 - Markham ON" thread."

Sure, and one of my cables from Monoprice was dead-on-arrival, so you can get a lemon anywhere. Be very careful quoting overall reliability from a sample size of ONE.

hi,
How much is shipping to Canada, and which company they're using. I had very bad experience with UPS recently, some other store shipped through regular UPS, and brokerage fee came almost 60% of my bill.
I swear, never again with UPS, of course if there is choice. Not sure which shipping company Monoprice is using.

Any order with a total value of under $20 is not subject to UPS's anal brokerage and taxes.
Monoprice lets you select USPS anyways.
