Do you need a fast reader? Unless you absolutely need to dump cards as fast as possible, I would save my money and wait the extra time it takes.

Maybe it's the card that's slow? There are more expensive cards like the Lexar Pro 133X SDHC which should be much faster.

if its the same Kingston 16gb that was on sale at FS... that is only a Class 4 card so I'm pretty sure getting a faster reader will not help.

trust me.. it is my stupid USB 2.0 reader problem.. it takes 20 minutes to write 2 GB data to class 4 SDHC card (way slower than 4M/sec rate!).
again, what reader you got?

I have a Sandisk ImageMate 5 in 1 Reader that was purchased from Canadacomputers. It writes to the Kingston 16GB at an average rate of 9.5Mb/s that was purchased from FS.

One the same line anyone have any recommendation for an internal reader that will do SDHC? Preferably not too expensive! The ngear go onsale for cheap at NCIX but they don't do HC. And the ones onsale right now shipping kills the deal.

The last two are fast based on the reviews though I don't have any of the two.

Get an ATP all in one.
Transcend makes a decent one.
If you can afford that Lexar, do it.

I see them go on special locally for $34.99 at London Drugs every once and a while, maybe just keep your eyes open for a sale...
I got mine free when I purchased a Lexar UDMA CF card a while back...

The Infonec one looks exactly like mine. It reads and writes to SDHC cards, here is the model number if it helps:
Model Numner: SDDR-99 V4

I have this: http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=016770&cid=990.434
It's pretty quick. Only quirk is that CF cards go in upside down.

I don't mean to sound rude here... but what is wrong with using the usb cable to directly transfer the photos from the camera to the computer?
I usually find the speeds for that are more than adequate.

Its a bit of a hassle, but works. I don't see why dumping cards in 0.01 seconds is important. Whats another 5 minutes? Unless your a pro and are filling up 8GB cards in 3 minutes, the extra speed is wasted cash. Save it for a lens.

I headed out to Henry's this morning and won a $25 GC woohoo! (as part of their first 100 customer GC give away). I ended up buying the ATP Pro Max all in one as they didn't have any of the Lexar readers in-stock. I like the compact shape and built-in usb dongle.
(Also picked up a Lowepro Rezo 140AW. edit: they also price matched Vistek with ZERO fuss. FS/BB should take notes on how to do business!)

I never said $50 was a lot of money, I simply said there are better things you can sped it on. For example, $50 is another 20GB of memory, a much better option IMO. More on the go storage or faster card dumping.

$50 is what I just paid for lunch this afternoon...what's your point?

That $50 is better off going to more memory. As I said above, more on the go storage is better than faster dumping time, IMO.

Patients. LOL
I never really timed it but I have the Kingston and pretty happy with it. I'm using Panasonic 4GB SDHC (similar to Lexar's Professional) and Kingston 8GB Class4 microSD.

Our opinions differ and that's fine. I prefer to be able to access my images quickly. It also helps when I am in the field and need to show a client an image on my laptop. It doesn't make a huge difference unless you are using UDMA cards with the UDMA reader anyway...
Cheers.

oh come on now you're just being argumentative. $50 is a lot of money for the average person and spending it wisely should be the mantra here.

For those making money from their photography, time does matter. The difference in speed spread over 16GB of transfer on a slow reader vs a fast reader can be rather surprising...

I have one of these it reads my 30 mb/s CF cards very quickly.
It matches or beats the Firewire Sandisk reader in a handful of tests.
Its small, incase you want to use it on the go.
For the fastest reader you can't be it for the price.

I could not find any recent USB reader reviews in Anandtech or Tomshardware. I think it is long overdue, but the more reputable review sites are not much into card readers. This is one for Kingston 19-in-1 that I found:

The Sandisk sounds like a good combo (compact flash, SD, xD, USB2.0, and SDHC compatible) -- where can you get one in Canada (or for that matter, metro vancouver region)? I've been looking around the net and all i can see are US sources.
