View Full Version : DIY Lightbox

I was inspired by a thread in another forum.
Materials:
-Cardboard box, cut some windows
-Parchment paper as light diffusers for windows and the top of the box
-2 lamps on the side, 1 lamp ontop
-Folders and Aluminum Foil as reflectors
-White poster board for the inside
-Tape
I might get a different light for the top because it doesn't seem to be bright enough. All these shots are handheld because my tripod doesn't go that low.
Anyone else wanna try?
Thoughts?

Yeah it might need more light in there like you mentioned. Do you have a strobe? You might want to try bouncing it off the top there and change your WB to tungsten along with adjusting the temperature in the RAW. You can also over expose to blow out the background (more white) and that sometimes work too. Here is my setup (posted in other section) and some pictures:

The reflective paper inside the box and top for bouncing. Reflective paper bounce cards for bouncing flash in certain directions. 250W Halogen to the right (more than enough power), 60W CFL shot to left, and Vivitar 285HV shot from hot shoe (or when triggers come; bounced to top or from umbrella).

With black drop and bounced lighting off a white card (@ 1/16 power).

No I don't have a strobe. My WB is custom. Just shot a plain white shot of the box without anything in it. WB looks okay to me. Does it look different on your monitor?
Think I'll just pick up a desk lamp tommorow. The light at the top is only a 15Watt Halogen

You shouldn't be using aperture priority for lighting setups like this. Notice how your exposure changed drastically depending on the object you were shooting. Switch to manual and meter off a grey card or until the background is white/blown out, not like the phone and ring shots.

Thanks, I'll try that next time. I'm thinking about putting something under the whole setup so I can raise it all higher so I can use my tripod. It's kind of a pain doing it handheld.

Many people also use glass under neath the object to give a reflection; I was hoping to try this out but couldn't find any glass.

All the picture frames in my house glass is larger than my crappy box ...

Thanks dude; P21S concours is the ****! Although I apply Supernatural Wax for the special occasion .

I also use a black background drop so I can't use anything that is solid white. I am just going to buy a cheap picture frame tomorrow.

very nice. I made/used something very similar and (through a family friend) actually took some shots for Revlon that they used.
my girlfriend gave me a sweet collapse one with different colours seamless backgrounds for xmas. My next project is to replace the $15 halogen work lights I bought from Home Depot. The damn things give off SO much heat, need to replace them with some cool lights.

I made my own earlier this week. Tried it out yesterday. Still could use a little more experimenting.
