I know SLR cameras are not allowed to some sporting events. I'm planning to go to an NHL game in January. Anyone know if they are allowed or not?

Yes
but they told me I can't bring anything over 75mm in
so first game I had to check my D40 DSLR with 18-135mm
second game I can go in with my D40 and 18-55mm lense
Raptors has no such restriction as far as I know?

I used my Orion bag with semi hidden bottom to smuggle in a 70-300.

The security guards are all confused, but the 75mm rule seems to apply to both raptors and leafs.
They have yet to rifle through my bag looking at all my lenses, but I usually carry a smaller 30 1.4 or 17-55 on the body. Smuggle an 85 1.8 in the bottom of bag or in pocket. If any security of pro photogs see a larger lens on the body, they will come and ask you check it.
That's why I like the 85...pretty small and I can still put a TC on it...
But after going so much, it's just not worth bringing it all down unless I'm by the sidelines with a MEDIA tag....

Nope, only applies to the Leafs. There is no focal length limit on the Raptors. If a security guard calls you out on it, say if you'd like, feel free to call your higher above, and confirm, because that only applies to the Leafs.

That is 100% correct with the Raptor's.
I brought in a 300mm F4 IS on my 50D without a word.
I emailed the security last year and printed out their response. They basically say "As long as you do not interfere with other spectators".
I bring the copy of the email with me just in case.
I got harrassed last year for 5 minutes until I pulled the sheet out.
Blue Jays follow that rule also.
The "lordly" leafs impose tigher restriction to take photos of all their all-stars.

Anyone know what the regulations are for Canuck games?

It's usually NHL policy throughout the league that the lens either can't have a focal length longer than 75mm, or the physical length of the camera with lens can't be longer than 15 cm. Its not that they're worried about you selling the photos. Its simply because of the people you're around, and distracting them.
Your best bet is to just call customer service and ask for specifics.

I used a 70-200mm without incident at the Canucks game last night.
I brought in my Crumpler 5MDH and they didn't even look twice at it. Must've thought it was my European ManBag.
I was very aware of blocking the view of those beside me when the action was in the far-end, near-side corner, so I tried to be polite.

got tickets to the raptors game this wednesday, lower bowl.
nervous about bringing my 70-200 if they are going to let me in or not. Plus not sure if there is any point, at F/4 probably won't be enough light (shooting with a 40D)

actually you'd be surprised how good the lighting is at the acc... i remember a year ago (when I still had my beginner gear), I brought my D40 with a 55-200mm 4-5.6 (way s***ier than your 40D + 70-200mm) sitting in the lower bowl and got decent results...wont get fast action but can still get pretty good shots of players if they are moving slow enough =p (well decent for me at the time when I was still a complete SLR noob =p )

cool, thanks for the pic!
i see you had to shoot that beast at 1600iso at f5.6. My 70-200mm jumps to 5.6 with the 1.4x on. Damn i now this really makes me want to sell the f/4 and get the 2.8

I've taken my D50 with an 18-200vr to a jays game last year at the Rogers centre and they seem to be cool with it. I even got it into Yankee stadium last spring but barely, the security lady looked at it for a bit and I got nervous but I was let in so it was all good.
The 70-300 isn't much longer then the 18-200 right? If it was the 70-200 2.8 then that might be another story. Actually a funny thing I saw at Yankee stadium was this skinny guy who had an unusually large belly for his body type and he sat near my section. I kept looking in his direction and realized he had a fake rubber gut strapped to his stomach which has a hidden compartment for beer. Something like that would be great for sneaking in longer lenses, so you would bring a DSLR and have a stubby lens like a 50mm prime on it when you walk in and then switch lenses when you get to your seat.

Naw, no problem. Been to Jays games with my 70-200 F2.8L IS. Cop who searched my bag at the ticket gate even marveled at what the lens could possibly capture and told me to get some good shots!

Its about 2" longer when not extended. I'll likely bring my Orion bag again. To date, no one has recognized there is a bottom section with a camera.

Got in no problem last night :D Showed security the 40D with the 10-20mm attached so no problems
I had to shoot at 1600ISO at F/4.5 to maintain at least 600-800/sec shutter speeds, and that was underexposing by 1/3 of a stop. I haven't had a chance to go through them all yet (got home late last night and had to be up early this morning) but I've already seen a bunch I'm pretty happy with.
Will post up some pics later tonight.

Curious ... if you're shooting a 10-20, you're not capturing action. Why worry about pushing it anywhere past 1/250th?

haha bingo. had the 70-200mm and the 1.4xtc in the bottom of the bag. I love my new lowepro 300AW. It looks like the bottom of the bag is completely empty when you take the camera out, but behind the flaps you could have 3+ lens in there!

Adjust your white balance. ;) 3700K should give you the proper WB.

hmmm...even though the WB seems to be more correct on the right side... i still prefer the warm colours of the left side photos ... or maybe its just cuz im viewing it on my **** notebook screen, in which case, i cud be completely wrong... il haf to review it again on my 22-inch monitor when i get back to Toronto later tonite =p

ya I did play with the wb a little bit, but the colours seemed a little too washed out, why i stuck with a little warmer colours. Might fix it later, someone e-mailed me and wants to use one on their website

That is so gay - limits on focal length of lenses at games? What for? Afraid of dropping it onto someone's head if is larger than 75mm?
Have a look at European soccer - the biggest game in the world - and you will see anyone with anything they want there. You want to take a picture, you go ahead and take your pictures. There is NO limit BS...
I really don't get it - what is the reasoning? Why at 75mm and not a 105mm?
What gives?
adblink182
Jan 20th, 2009, 11:13 AM
well 75mm because they had to pick a number i guess. Also because they probably don't want people trying to take pictures and selling them? I have no idea I'm just taking guesses here. I hardly doubt its about safety.

I agree completely, the white balance in those second shots may be more 'correct' but it feels lifeless. Also the whites in the background are too blue. Think you went a little too far there.
