Upload burn on multiple DVDs for archival purposes. I only keep it on the memory card if I'm too lazy to delete them after getting it off ASAP.

Always download to main PC after a shoot, from main PC it goes into my external backup. If its a wedding, goes into my mobile drive viewer right away after each segments of a wedding day.
Why would you want to keep it on your camera? I only know of point and shoot users who do that... then they spend like 30 minutes going through photos deleting photos to make space for shooting wherever it is they are.

DEFINITELY not. Very bad idea. Flash memory can easily fail, plus wouldn't make much sense to look at your pictures on a tiny screen (compared to a monitor) and keep having to buy more and more flash memory.
Shoot for the day, put it on the harddrive when i'm done, and backup the new images every month or so to a dvd. Thats my process. Was hoping to get a 1TB EXT to use between leaving it on my computer and burning dvds, but missed on the (VERY few) decent deals on boxing day :(

I always transfer all pictures to PC right after I get home. Then put a second copy on external hdd plus archving to dvd every few shoots. It may seems redundant but storage are cheap these days. So at the next shoot I always start with a blank card.
I really don't understand why anyone would want to keep pictures on the memory card for so long; it takes up space and by keep viewing it on the camera the battery runs out much quicker. Not to mention flash memory card can die on you any time.

Most of my relatives are doing that now. SD or CF cards are dirt cheap ($10 for 4gb SD is pretty common now). The hassle of figuring out how to archive stuff on the computer is too much.
If they want to see the pics on a computer screen, then they just use a card reader.

CF cards are not nearly as cheap as SD cards, not even close.
archiving on just memory cards is asking for trouble imo

I transfer all them to iPhoto and depending on the Picture, I will back it up.
Do you need to Format the Card?

To prevent card corruption, yes.

That is asking for trouble. SD cards are no where as reliable as CDs, DVDs, or HDDs. Having one copy on flash media is the worst way to store pictures.

casual photographers tend to love keeping pics on their card.
I got my uncle a Canon SD850 + 2GB card last year. he hasn't transferred anything to PC yet, so I secretly take his card and make sure I copy everything onto PC as backup every once in a while. Card already went corrupt once and required a reformat, so yeah, SD media isn't exactly the best way of storing media.
As for myself. I transfer to PC and format after every use. I think it's good practice.
