I have a sony bravia 40 inch screen that i got as a display model for about 1,200 a few months ago (before they did the exchange policy). I am returning it as it just doesnt seem to be the best qualilty and with a call to cosco manager, I can return it.
So I was interested when I saw that the sony bravia 40 inch was on sale at walmart on boxing day. I like the black gloss look as well it is cheaper and its NOT a display model. So I went up to a walmart worker to confirm the one I was looking at was the one that was going to be on sale.
She had the look of death given out to me as well as a mix of shock and she she sputtered out to me that how did i know about this. I said its in your boxing day flyer. And she said well its not out yet. I swear I thought she was going to turn postal on me. I just calmly said I was able to get it on a website and so I know that its on sale. She came clean and told me that it was but was pretty miffed about it. Turned out she was the Walmart manager. The person I was with thought she was pretty ignorant and said he wouldnt buy water from her if he was on fire.
I decided that I wanted to know if there was an exteneded warranty so after wandering around the store I went back by myself and got the warranty information. The same lady saw me and was REAL nice to me. Complete turn around. Weird. Supposivly its about 85.00 for a 3 year which I like.
Either way I will pay attention from now on to what I say because I dont want that reaction again. :(

Perhaps this should be in the Boxing Day 2008 Discussion forum NOT the deal forum?

Your experience with Walmart is not a hot deal, not even at 100% off.

Heh. You should have told them you know how much they make a year too, and how much less someone who will replace them would work for...
What is it about this season that brings out the worst in retail employees and management?

What is it about this season that brings out the worst in retail employees and management?
Because they are so ridiculously busy and most likely have to work long hours...
It's not an excuse to be rude, but is natural that people aren't peppy when they are busy and stressed out.

I suppose those people are pissy the other 11 months of the year too.
I used to work Boxing Day at Best Buy. It was fun. Stressful, maybe. Tiring, yes, but a hoot to be involved in.
Cranky retail employees are in the wrong career industry. Maybe septic tank service would be more up their alley...

OP: Should have said that you have ESP!
Funny experience even if it was a coincidence that you were talking to the manager.

Even better: Tell them you are a member of the Walton family and are doing random spot checks of your family investments!

Whatever. She confirmed that it was going to be on sale, even though she didn't have to, if the flyer isn't supposed to be made public until later.

No offense, but you sound like a problem customer. You bought a 40" Sony Bravia with a pretty fair discount. Now, months later, you are returning it with the excuse that it isn't "best quality".
Except you instantly go out and try to buy the identical 40" Sony Bravia. Obviously the quality is good enough for you, or you wouldn't be buying the same TV again.
Let's face it, you're abusing Costco's return policy for your own betterment... and providing a false excuse for a return.
You've had plenty of time to assess the quality, and if it wasn't good enough you should have returned it long ago.
You then tell a story about someone giving you the look of death in one moment, and being nice to you the next. It seems implausible, and the fact you are still alive means you were probably exaggerating the look of death claim too.
All it probably was that is that staff were likely told not to reveal much about the sales in advance of the flyer drop date, and she was surprised to hear you had the info early. She may have been wondering if one of her people was leaking info.
What burns me is that people who abuse return policies cause retailers to over react and then give the honest customers a harder time with our legitimate returns.
Don't take this in a bad way, but I kind of hope you don't get it on the Walmart Boxing Day deal and that you just end up keeping your first Bravia TV.

Heck, last year, I took printouts of the Walmart Flyer on RFD, and just asked the lady "do you have these things?" She looks at me and says "uh, yea over there"
They figure its better to just acknowledge stuff then to repute it :)

You owned the OP.
I was kinda thinking the same about the "look of death" thing because I wouldnt be surprised. Of all the walmarts in the country, the least that can happen is someone tells his friend about some of the deals. NOT SURPRISING AT ALL.
Also like someone said, the flyers were delivereed to some people's doors so the info was public.
Or the manager is dumb or the OP is lying.

It's more likely that the manager is dumb. Always assume other people are dumb until proven otherwise.

The dude may have meant physical quality as opposed to picture quality. Mind you, it shouldn't take months to figure that out.

Not sure about Wal-mart, but Zellers merchandise managers start at around $32k salary IIRC. That isn't even the assistant manager. The issue is that they have huge responsibility for sales, and have to work long hours without overtime pay. I'd often see the managers there from 8am until 6 or 7pm, sometimes even till close. And they are always running around like a chicken with their head cut off and no time to breathe.

This story is quite common, never tell a manger...heck don't tell any employee in a store you "found their flyer early online".
Remember that poor guy who got kicked out of an RCSS by the mananger because he had "early knowledge" of sales from this board? Telling an employee that you "found it online" isn't "cool" to the person, if they are high up enough on the ladder (manager for example) they will just get PISSED off at you.
Golden rule about finding out things early, keep your trap shut like politicians do to keep out of trouble. If someone grills you, just say you got the flyer in your mailbox...it happens sometimes that flyers arrive early.

Ummm...I hope this did not actually happen. If a manager tried to do that to me, I would LMAO and just continue shopping. If he touches me in any way, I'll press charges. I mean, the guy didn't even do anything wrong. How could the manager kick him out of the store?

I believe they would call security and have you escorted off the premises. It is private property.
Your recourse would be to complain to the manager's superior. And here's a hint: you are not their superior.

Private property. They are perfectly within their rights to ask you to leave for whatever reason e.g.…I don’t know…decreasing their real estate value with your presence. I'm not sure if they can or cannot physically expel you from their property but the cops that are being called can certainly do it…
EDIT: Damn my fat fingers for typing so slow...was beaten to it.

Heh I was at Best Buy last night and asked a guy if a certain tv was one that was on sale on boxing day and he replied that they don't know what the boxing day deals are going to be. That surprised me and I told him it's posted on their website and he still didn't know that it was even posted.
