I may be incorrect, if so, please correct me. However, I'm fairly sure this is the differences between the models of each company. It's not meant to be used to compare between companies, but within in the same company.
Personally: If 720p, go with the Samsung A450. Everyone only seems to have the Sony L on sale and the Samsung A450 blows that out of the water according to every review I've read.
If 1080p, go with the Sony V or Samsung 5 minimum. I have heard of gaming lag issues with the Samsung TVs. You have to set it to Game Mode on the Samsungs which turns off all the processing and is not tweakable. The Sonys allow you to tweak game mode a bit.
I believe it goes:
1080p: Sony Z = Samsung 6 > Sony W > Samsung 5 >= Sony V >> Sony S
720p: Samsung 4 > Sony M > Samsung 3 >> Sony L
Sony
L series
Sizes: 32, 37
720p
- Basic stripped down model
M series
Sizes: 19, 26, 32, 37, 40
720p
- Adds Bravia Engine 2
S series
Sizes: 40, 46, 52
1080p
- Removes Bravia Engine 2 (equivalent of L but 1080p I guess)
V series
Sizes: 40, 42, 46, 52
1080p
- Adds Bravia Engine 2
- Adds XMB interface
W series
Sizes: 40, 46, 52
1080p
- Adds 120 Hz + V features
- Slightly better contrast?
Z series
Sizes: 40, 46, and I think 52?
1080p
- Adds 10-bit panel I believe and networking crap + W features
- Slightly higher contrast?
There's also the XBR series but I don't think there are Boxing Day sales on any of them.
Samsung
3 series
Hell if I know.
4 series
Sizes: 19, 22, 26, 32, 37, 40
720p
5 series
Sizes: 32, 37, 40, 46, 52
1080p
- 530 is carried by all retailers but Future Shop which carries the 550
- 550 has USB inputs and slightly higher contrast than 530
- 500 is a Boxing Day exclusive you probably won't see again (no price protection) and strips out some inputs + slightly lower contrast
6 series
Sizes: 32?, 40, 46, 52
1080p
- 650 uses "ultra clear panel" which isn't as anti-glare but much clearer than usual LCD panels
- 120 Hz
- Better contrast
7 series
Sizes: same as 6 series I believe?
1080p
- exclusive to Future Shop
- same picture quality as 6 series but includes networking features
There's also an 8 and I think 9 series coming which I don't know enough about and don't see this Boxing Day.
