This is last year's model. This year's model is actually the 65U and has a slower response time. The only issues I've heard with this set are some banding issues. Google to find out more.
The 64U has a faster response time (4ms) vs the 65U (6ms) but I don't know what else is different. I believe they increased the response time so there's more differences between the 65U and 85U, which does have a 4ms response time still (unlike last year's 84U).

You'd be better of going with the Samsung LN46A500 or LN46A530 with are better TV's and about $100 more on boxing day

i have this tv in the 42" version, i bought it last year because it was the best gaming LCD out there.
i believe its actually 2 ms and its color accuracy was better than almost all others when i bought it also.
the specs of this LCD are better than most out there right now. and the whole 120 hertz thing.. pfft.. i remember there being a lot of debate about that. dont think its even a noticable difference.

Could be had on sale for $1099 thru the fall months, and for $999 or less with haggling or F&F sales.
The 64U series have issues with banding, same with the 62U and some previous models. My sister in law was seriously considering this model for her husband for xmas, but after looking at other models and then finally seeing the banding issues on the displays when looking up close, we dropped all Sharps from the running.
The 85U are a great tv, but I would consider a Toshiba, Samsung or Sony far sooner than dropping the extra bills on the mid/high end Sharp.
There will probably be stock of this tv under $800/$900 open box in the month or two after boxing day, as people return them when they see the banding issues, and the prices of newer models drop to the $1000 bracket.

Some day peeps will ,do more homework than 2 yrs ago and know the units (64 series) ,no longer have those issues. It's a good deal for the price .You can always pay more for newer models ,it depends on what your looking for .

your english is much more confusing than me!
64U and 65U are almost the same thing, updated version means something changed very slightly, and there is no 82u in market either, you have no idea about sharp aquos line
you said 64U is last year model, that is not truth,it is 06 year model, and release in year later 2005
i made mistakes,85U is released this year and was thought as 08 version, new generation instead of the role in canadian market of 64U(or 65U)
82U is no such thing now ,82U series is just series name!
i made myself more understandable now?you mistook all ideas about sharp product line

(Here is what this post would look like if the OP wasn't ignorant and illegible. It actually has some good information, so I've cleaned it up)
First, I apologize for my poor grammatical skills, and improper use of exclamation marks.
The 64U and 65U versions are very similar. The updated version means "something" has been changed slightly.
There is no 82U version on the market.
You've also said that the 64U is is last year's model. This statement is untrue. The 64U is actually an 06 model, released in late 2005.
I made a mistake, however. The 85U was released this year. It is the new version of the 64/65U. As I mentioned above, the 82U does not exist.
I hope that I have clarified my earlier post. Have a Merry Christmas, and a great holiday season.

Sorry, but the 46" 64U we saw at several Future Shop locations, Best Buy, and even Visions ALL had banding issues, some more than others. This was as little as 2 weeks ago.
Once you see it, it's annoying as hell. Kind of like a big rock chip right in your field of view on a windsheld. Once you see it, it's always in the way and noticeable. Shouldn't be the case with A BRAND NEW PRODUCT.

If you take a look at the spec sheet for the 64U and 65U series, you will find the following (BIG) differences:
64U:
Response time: 4ms
Panel type: 10bit TFT
65U:
Response time: 6ms
Panel type: 8bit TFT
So the 65U actually a downgrade...

It's one of the hotter TV deals from FS.
On display, it looked pretty good
For $1000, you can't go wrong and shouldn't expect it to be perfect either.

Hey thanks for your opinions I appreciate it!
Besides the Sharp LC46D64U Aquos 1080p 46 what other LCD's are on par with the price?
Maybe it would be worth going 42inch with better quality picture? Though I did have my hopes on a 46inch.

Two years ago 62U (predecessor of 64 and only slightly worse) was THE best LCD TV for any price (even better than XBR) as long as you didn't have banding. I paid $3150 and that was a negotiated deal price. And look at it now... There's no reason a person would not like this TV provided the price is right (and again, no banding is seen). There are certainly considerably better TVs today - I've seen some 750 or 850 Samsungs recently and was blown away but they were $2500 and up.

Beyond the obvious looking at the TV in the store I actually have the Sharp 46D64U and have no banding what so ever. I paid $1199 on Nov 20, got price protection a week later to $1099 and talked to the manager at my local FS yesterday and got price protection down to the $999 price.
Once you calibrate this TV (try AVS forum for calibration tips) you will love it.
