In the past 3 years, I've picked up cameras, dvd burners, blank dvds, laptops, Mp3 players, surround sound, etc.
There hasn't been one flyer that has been "Wow".
Maybe the dire economy has made me more of a cynic!

Same here. I usually buy stuff, but this year none of the prices are appealing to me, I'm specifically looking for a quality 50" + plasma/LCD, so far I'm not impressed.

Nothing's appealing this boxing day. To be honest, some of the deals that get posted here on RFD all year long are better than the boxing day specials(actaully they are not specials).

Same here. Nothing has really jumped out at me that makes me want to buy. I may skip the boxing day thing and enjoy the snowy outdoors instead.
Last year there were $199 computers (AMD X2), $399 (?) notebooks, DSLR Cameras, external hard drives, TV/Movie DVDs, and even the ill-fated $199 HD-DVD player.

so disappointing, maybe it's a sign of the poor economic times.
In the US they know how to have a sale, black friday was crazy there.
Walmart had a 50 inch samsung plasma for $800, 720p but still a good price.

I was talking to a coworker early today and commenting how crappy the deals really are, and I'm usually an optomist.
Typical Canadian Retailer mentality. Hype up deals, and then dissappoint.
Yes we will see the idiots lined up at 3am...for some it's a cult passing...which I understand...but for others, it's being suckered in by the moronic media.

+1 i have to agree, when some items are on sale they seem to be even cheaper than on boxing day and i think i saw the emachines laptop on the fs flyer, i could have swore i saw it at the same regular price as the boxing day price.

I think this is the RFD effect on us... we're so used to finding great deals here that boxing day deals aren't at all special anymore.
I often hear my co-workers talk about certain sales they see now and then in stores, etc.. and they think it's amazing. I just laugh silently, knowing that with the help of RFD, there are better deals to be had... and if they are nice ppl, I often tell them the deal sucks and should check RFD before making any purchases :D

FS has the Pioneer Kuro 5020 on for $2499 that a pretty med hot deal
But as usual it has the 40 accross canada Limitation making it sold out in 5 secs at 8pm when the race to space begins!
Should be 400 accross Canada NOT 40! I would buy that but its gonna be frutile and after last years BS with FS who wants to go threw that again, not getting my money and I am sleepin in and spending time with family.

I think it was about 8 years ago I swore I would never head out to a retailer on Boxing ay and never have. Nothing is worse the wait, the parking, the people and the crappy sales.
Boxing Day for me is basically a day to sleep in and an extension of Christmas Day :)

Especially with the big box stores, worst deals ever, even smaller stores have better deals, what a let down this year. Probably get a better deal next week or in the new year when they go on sale.

I was already feeling that I dont "need" anything but I was so excited that the prices are gonna go down so much this season and I would "want" to buy something LOL. But it didnt happen.
The feeling of prices going down created the need to buy a TV. I still have a hard time deciding if im buying something or not. If yes, will I line up or not. Like you I guess im going to wait for next year. Thats another option right there.

Prices have dropped so much on televisions in the past six months that it's hard to drop any lower.
A 65" TV was over $15k a couple years ago. Now the entry is $2500.

The so-called "deals" this year are TERRIBLE.
There were better deals LAST F'KING YEAR for gods sake.
I wouldn't mind a 1TB external drive, but they're MORE EXPENSIVE this year than they were last year.
I think the Canadian retailers are a cynical bunch of rip off artists so used to lying to the public they think they can tell us ANYTHING and we'll simply line up to take it.
There is no such thing as an honest "retail price" nowadays. The supposed "retail price" is more like a Sears price, so inflated as to be insulting, and only there so when you have a "sale" you can sell your products for the ACTUAL retail price.
There should be laws to prevent this, but there never will be, it will take people NOT being suckered in to stop this practice.
Wal-Mart is the second worst offender in this regard next to Sears, btw.
I for one am not going out to buy a single thing this Boxing Day, and its not going to bother me at all because I have yet to see a single "deal" that isn't of the Sears variety...bunch of cynical thieves...
I buy Blu-Ray's and wouldn't mind another player, but I've noticed that overall, the prices of players have steadily INCREASED over the last 6 weeks or so. It is by design, for sure. All retailers are using a version of the Sears/Wal-Mart pricing strategy, and its all meant to manipulate you into actually paying more for all of your items.

peace,
There is a thread around here somewhere for sam's club or ?? that has it listed for $1598.00. That's an awesome deal considering it's about $1000.00 off the going price. I even think the link showed the regular price at $2498.00 but I could be wrong......
I know this will sound like blasphemy to be posting this on RFD but the retailers are crapping their pants as well. I haven't hit any malls this year but I'm told their dead.
No matter what retailers still have to turn a profit so bitching about not enough deals, well, maybe we should all take a step back and say "better to hedge our bets and not buy like a bunch of maniacs and get a bunch of stuff that we don't really need"? (a perfect reason is that guy who was killed at walmart on black friday)......

+1. I'm quite disappointed in the deals so far. Retailers seem to be using the Boxing Day thing merely to dump old unsold stock on uneducated consumers.

That's a different model. 5010 is on sale for $1,600. It has some issues (buzz noise).

Thats the odd thing about this year, retailers (mall or big box) would rather hold on to their inventory and "protect their margins" this year than have real sales.
To me it seems more rational to take the money and run while there is foot traffic in the stores and people willing to spend (even though they probably shouldn't be). Try getting that traffic and money back into your store again in late January/February.
It looks more like there will just be price increases in the future, especially if retailers start shutting down en masse like they are expected to.
I must agree the deals are not that great this year. I guess no one like to do business at a loss? The major retailers are probably in their "wait and see" mode. If Boxing Days/Week sales are not good there may be better deals in Jan/Feb before they have to do their inventories. On the other hand you may not want to see what you wish for: if they started cutting prices and the economy goes into a depression it will take years to recover (or not at all - just look at Japan).
Not to mention things like LCD TVs, etc. have already had their priced lowered quite a lot during the year so they probably can't go lower unless the stores put them on clearance. The margins on most low to mid end consumer electronics are pretty thin.

Actually we are lucky, since some of the prices are cheaper than even US stores. Take the insignia blu ray for 99 bucks. Its 199 at bestbuy.com plus 20% exchange rate.
Canadian retailers are going to be raising prices higher to reflect a weaker dollar which is why things could have been cheaper last year. For me, if its cheaper than what American stores have it for, than its a deal.
