I would recommend the Sansa Clip at Future Shop for $39. It's small, but it feels solid. It's probably the best sounding micro MP3 player (at least when teamed with a good set of headphones.) I have one myself and it's served me well at the gym, on runs, etc.

Do a search on HeadFi.org and read the endless praise on this player.
