My phone just died and I need a new one. Last time I bought a phone wqas 3 years ago, where a 2.0 megapixel camera ran you $500. I see technology has quite improved, but I have no clue what phone does what or what 3g is. This is basically what i want to do
-Make calls
-send/Recieve txt msg
-Browse the internet (not off a cell phone network, but a wireless AP I can set up and browse everything for free and quickly)
-Play videos I load onto it (perferably with todays lattest codecs if such technology exsists)
-AS small as possible
Everything else is not nessesary, like games, camera, etc etc.
So what are my options here? Im assumin certain models of blackberries or something? I have no intention of getting any sort of data plan, whatever those are. I just want to keep my current plan.
OH Im on rogers BTW. Would be willing to sign a 3-year contract for a good price too.

Go with the Nokia E7-2 or the Blackberry Bold 9000.

You've listed browsing without a dataplan but with wireless. THat may be somewhat difficult. There isn't as much free wifi out there (at least in Vancouver).
What carrier are you with? Telus and Bell have some fairly competitive data plan rates.
From your list, sounds like the HTC touch diamond would do the trick for you. It has the opera internet browser loaded on it and it has video capabilities. One drawback is that HTC uses the windows mobile os. I have it on my current phone too. I can bear with it, but personally, when I get a new phone in 1.5-2 years, I'm going to go with another phone with another operating system. I find the windows system on cell phones to be somewhat sluggish.

thanks guys. I narrowed it down to basically the 4 phones mentioned here
- Iphone
- Blackberry bold
- nokia E71 (couldnt find anything about e72?)
- HTC Dimond.
As for the wifi, My plan was to set up an access point at work, where im at for 8.5 hours a day. Basically I would be able to browse the web at all times this way. Other then that, I wouldnt be to concerned with web browsing so no need to get the data plan.
I went to bestbuy and saw 3 of the 4 phones above (still havent seent he bold). Unfortunetly only the iphone worked, the other phones were fake. Im liking the iphone but its a little bigger then the others from what i saw. I realize its thinner but its still bigger, and I dont want another wallet sized device in my pocket.
I need more advice/ do more research to help in choosing between these 4.

The Bold is a little larger than the iphone, isn't as good for browsing the web because you have less screen(although I think it's a higher resolution), but imo is far superior for texting considering it has real keys.
The problem is finding a smaller phone. You might be better getting a Pearl 8120. It has wifi a pseudo qwerty keyboard, very good battery life and the smallest form factor. The phone is a little old now so you should be able to buy a used one at a good price or get one on contact for $149 without a data plan(I think).
Also the blackberry pearl flip has wifi, or so I read on the internets.
As far as I understand Safari(only on the iPhone) is the best browser out there at the moment. Opera can be loaded on pretty much everything else and does a fairly decent job(I've never had a issue with it).

Ended up getting a Pearl 8120. I couldnt upgrade my phone because im on a corporate plan and no longer work for the company and rogers was asking for my employee #. the 8120 seemed to be the only affordable phone flat out. All the rest were 2x the price. I like the phone. Very sleek and small.
Now If I can just figure out how to disable data on this thing so I can use the wifi.

Personally in terms of browsing I prefer the Nokia E71 over the Iphone. I find too many times with the Iphone touch screen it doesn't always respond how you want it to. For example trying to zoom in to a specific part of the website it doesn't always do it. I like the browsing thats done within Opera Mini, but in terms of video playback the Iphone is superior.

this was taken from another site
On the current Pearl OS, you can control access to data by going to Options/Network and setting the Data Services to On or OFF. Don't know if this will help you are not, but the Option is there. I also believe it in in the latest OS for the 8700, but can't verify that.
not sure if that's for the newest OS but it should say data connection off on your phone when you do it.
Also as a backup you might want to call Rogers and have them put a block on all data for your phone on their end.
