Help a former Westerner out.

it seems that old dutch tried to launch here, but couldn't with the big boys already well established in the market... they dropped their prices significantly to keep old dutch outta supermarkets so they were here for a short time but pulled out.. :(

i love old dutch chips too.. they rock! but ever since i moved to Toronto, i haven't had any -_-

Well they sell Old Dutch chips in the new flavour line called Rave near my house at a Hasty Market in the Junction (Dundas West and High Park avenue)

They are the only 1.79 for a large bag of chips

flavours they sell:
salt & pepper
bbq
buffalo wings
roast turkey
and a couple others...

I'm another ex-westerner who has looked for these for years. Every now and then I find them at a small convenience store, but never for long and never reliably.

I think they still have a small foothold in Toronto but not as much as they should.

Maybe someone wants to contact the company and ask for a list of local outlets...

Old Dutch was a real eye opener for my kids when we started going to the cabin in northwestern Ontario and getting them, now I have to bring them back whenever I travel out there!

Its a Safeway thing and they wont let them come out east!

I emailed them a couple of days ago and this is what they wrote:

March 2, 2004

Dear xxxxx,

Thank you for your letter and interest in sampling our product.

Due to the high cost and time-consuming process to ship our products outside our distribution area, Old Dutch has made the executive decision to stop this service.

At the present, we are looking into better and cheaper ways for our national consumers to also enjoy our product.

Again thank you for your interest in Old Dutch Foods.

Yours Truly,

Old Dutch Foods Ltd.

Ok I love those chips too and I found them.

First place (where I used to live):
A video store on Lakeshore right beside Mimico. I think it is called "1000 videos." I could be wrong on the name but the sign is all red text on a white background.

Second place (Just found this one three weeks ago)
Lakeshore and Erin Mills. I can't remember the store but it is east of Erin Mills in the same little strip mall as the Pizza Nova.

Not sure if any of these locations are good for you but those are the only ones I know about.

ps. I take a bag of chips with me to work almost everyday for lunch :)

OK I suddenly had a craving for chips (induced no doubt) so I wandered up to the Hasty Market @ 3076 Dundas street west (1 block west of High Park Avenue) Low and behold they had at least 6 different flavours of the original Old Dutch chips and another 5 of the new rave line.

Go get em tiger!

well, bought old dutch at the hasty market and tried them for first time. tried some of the bbq and then sour cream & onion. bbq has too much seasoning. sour cream & onion are pretty good. i don't see much difference between old dutch and lays or humpty dumpty. maybe old dutch is a bit less greasy. don't think i'll go out of my way to get them again.

Yeah those Rave BBQ chips are very flavourful but not great. My favourites are the salt & pepper and Cheddar jalepeno. I'm going to try the regular Old Dutch brand next time I'm there.

I think these chips are slightly healthier than the Lays and Humpties according to my "Ice cream and chocolate is good for you diet" but they are still complex carb filled potato chips. Bah! pass me a Sleaman Clear

No old dutch? Here in Calgary, Old dutch has just as big of a market share as does Frito-Lays.

You guys are really missing out on the Dutch Crunch Mesquite BBQ chips, those are the best there is IMHO

Don't quote me on this, but I remember reading that when they tried to launch in Ontario, Humpty Dumpty was buying them up and dumping them.

Just a useless tidbit I remember reading somewhere that finally came in handy. :)

You can order them online:

http://olddutchfoods.ca/indexC.cfm

They charge $15 for a box with up to 5 different flavours (3 boxes, 2 bags), plus another $15 for shipping.

I don't miss them that much for $6 a bag/box.

There used to be a website for expat Winnipegers that compiled a list of where you could find them in Toronto. This is a link to that list, but it is probably at least a couple of years old, so YMMV:

I know they have them at King's Market, King and Shaw. The Sour Cream and Onion ones are deadly. So much salt or MSG. But soooooooo good.

I am pretty sure I have seen them in local grocery stores (Dominion, loblaws, etc) in the last few months... I will keep an eye out next time I am there.

I remember having Humpty Dumpty's S&V when I lived briefly in Ont. years ago - best S&V chips ever! So much flavour! Which is the more popular company in the east - Lays or Humpty Dumpty?

And does anyone know where to buy HD chips in Calgary, if such a thing is possible?

I was just wondering if the flavour bacon still exists or even existed?

For some unknown reason I feel like I almost imagined this flavour, and if it did exist, does it still or has it been discontinued, and if discontinued, approx. when?

We don't even have Thunder Crunch out here anymore :( Well, it's definitely rare to find, I love the hot wings flavour!!! And oh man, Old Dutch ketchup is the best. BLAH. I find they are so much better than Lays. The Lays just don't compare :)

I was back home in Winnipeg this past weekend visiting the parents and munched on a bag of Old Dutch salt 'n vinegar. Just like I remembered them as a kid. They aren't greasy at all like Lay's.

On another note, I saw Hostess brand chips in a store in TO last week. I thought that Frito Lay's had eliminated this brand after buying them out a few years back, but I guess they are making a comeback with this "Canadian" brand (that is owned by a US company).

And oh man, Old Dutch ketchup is the best. They stopped making the boxed ones ages ago and switched to the bags.
Whatchoo talkin' bout, Willis?! You can get boxes of ketchup flavour at Safeway, IGA, Save-On, and those are just the stores I know from recent memory.

Lays makes smoky bacon chips. which are AWESOME and my absolute favorite chips ever!

my next favouritenext is the Old Dutch onion and garlic, yum yum

and yeah, old dutch still come in the boxes with two separate bags. although the bags INSIDE arent clear any more, they are silver

Are the bags still next to impossible to open by hand without ripping them to shreds or relying on a pair of scissors?

no, they actually open easy now, the same as regular bag of chips where you just pull the seam apart

oh man, i remember those awful bags though. you couldnt even rip them open with your teeth without destroying the bag in the process

okay, i was just at Safeway, and saw that they had old dutch 'Crispy Bacon' chips! so you're not imagining things! although i have NEVER seen them before by old dutch. they came in the bag only, no box

they were on sale at 3 for $4 or $1.34 each (wicked deal) so i picked up a bag. gotta see how they compare to Lays smoky bacon chips

You can get Old dutch chips in a number of small convenience stores in Brampton. There's a place on the west side of Kennedy north of Queen in the Coffee Time strip mall and another in the plaza on the southwest corner of Rutherford and Queen beside the Plat It Again Sports store that carry them. Other places around town too.

I recall seeing some Old Dutch chips at The Canadian Superstores in Toronto. There are two locations, one is at Dufferin and Steeles (southwest corner) and the other is at Don Mills and Eglinton (Northeast corner) near The Science Centre.
