I recently bought a DSLR for a cousin (40th birthday) and I would like to give a book or some educational material alongside it. He has been raving about photography for years but because of some health issues and expenditure on those issues was not able to purchase a DSLR for himself.

I do know that he wants to learn and is motivated, so what book or other material should accompany his new XS?

Look into these, they are highly recommended, I've ordered both from amazon.ca.

Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Vol 1 and 2
Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure

Two of the better books out there.

Also, another option is videos. They're sometimes more appealing to some.

if this is his first DSLR, maybe one of those books or video explaining in detail that specific model you bought

If he has got the basics like exposure covered, I suggest Light: Science and Magic by Paul Fuqua.

To cover the basics, just google the internet. ;)

I picked up both of these books as well. If you really want to get into the hobby there's also "Photography" (author's last name is London). It's more like a text book in size, presentation, and content. Very thorough, though it doesn't necessarily focus on digital photography.

You could also consider those books focused on the dSLR model you gave. There are a series of books for the Canon, Nikon, and Sony line-up.
