View Full Version : Elect [Merged] Amazon.co.uk: Planet Earth Blu-Ray 5-Disc BBC Edition - $48 CAD shipped
Firestorm

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Planet-Earth-Complete-BBC-Blu-ray/dp/B000SKNIWE/
This is the BBC version and has 5 discs. Region-Free. It adds to cart for less than listed price due to reduction of VAT I believe. After shipping it's about $48 Canadian. This may be lower depending on the exchange rate.
The Discovery Channel one has a different narrator, less content, and is at a lower resolution.
The BBC version found in US and Canada has 4 discs instead of 5. I'm not entirely sure why. Hopefully someone can shed some light on that.
Will not arrive before Christmas under the cheapest shipping.
If there's an RFD Link for amazon.co.uk, please edit my post with it.
Frequently Asked Questons
Q: Will this play on my BluRay Player?
A: Yes. It is region-free.
Q: What is different in this version?
A: It is the same as the BBC version in Canada and the US, but includes an additional disc on Snow Leapords and Desert Lions. It is of lower quality, but hey, it's an extra and it still costs less. Unlike the Discovery Channel US edition, it is narrated by the original narrator and does not cut off 10 minutes of each episode to make room for commercials.
Q: Is it 1080p?
A: Yes. The box says 1080i, but video is 1080p. The only things that are 1080i are the opening logos, menu, and 5th disc. Discs 1 - 4 are all 1080p.
Q: Is there a customs fee?
A: Yes an no. YMMV. Many of us have had no charges. Many of us have. If you do get a charge, it will be around $12 keeping it cheaper than anywhere in Canada anyway.
Q: Does Amazon.co.uk price protect?
A: No. If you bought this at the old price, your SOL like me. You still got a great deal.

Quite hot. I was looking for this for my parents since they just got a blu ray player. Ordered. Maybe it'll get here for Xmas, although unlikely.
The extra disc contains 2 short films also narrated by David Attenborough. One of them is on Snow Leopards. I don't think they're anything amazing.
Thanks OP.

I imagine it should be fine... I played my UK copy of Wanted in my PS3 60GB over the weekend and it worked just fine. :)

Dec 16th, 2008, 06:10 PM
Regarding PAL/NTSC, I believe those formats don't apply to blu-ray. 1080/24p is all you need to know regarding the video format. You do need to worry about region, but most blu-rays are region-free at this point.
I'm no expert, so confirmation of this would be nice.
Thanks OP!

Hmm on product description, it says region free, so should be able to play on NA blu ray players, im not sure about pal or ntsc issues though, anyone know anything about this??
For standard DVD players there were players that were able to be made region free however didn't have the ability to convert pal to ntsc (so the only discs from other regions that could be watched were R2 Ntsc Japanese discs).
Not saying that'll translate to blu-ray but it's something that's come up in the past for ordering standard dvds

If it's Canada Post, they charge a $5 flat handling fee plus applicable duties and taxes so this killer deal could become just an average or bad deal when all the bills come in.

Can I know where you've read that amazon.co.uk necessarily will use UPS for international orders ?
From what I can read there :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=3330451#International
they make a difference between "Air Mail" (the default shipping option when ordering) and UPS/DHL/other private shipping services.
Plus the prices listed there:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=11072991
look nothing like what UPS would charge for international shipping.
Moreover, I bought quite a few times from amazon.fr and I've never had a package shipped with UPS.
So I think I'll take that chance ;)

Go for the dvd with the dude - it's a better overall release. The babe who does the other one just narrates so there's not even any chance of checking out side boob.

Amazon.co.uk have some incredibly cheap deals on DVDs if you can play Region 2 & know someone over there.
E.g. Whole series of West wing (7seasons) for 48pounds - about C$90 CDN -- its C$200+tax here (and that's a good price as individual seasons are C$60 each).
A season of The Shield is 10 pounds - about C$18-19 - about $40+tax here.
I have family there & pick stuff up when I'm over.
Something to think about if your planning a vacation over there.

Great deal, thanks OP! Just ordered.
BTW I think the reason the price goes down from 25 pounds to 22 before shipping is because in the UK VAT (sales tax) is embedded in the price of most goods and services (unlike here). The VAT is deducted out once they know goods are shipping outside UK.
UK VAT adds up to around 15% I think, so the numbers sound about right.

Don't know if this holds true still, but the last time I bought from Amazon UK, they shipped it by British Post Air Mail. So it should be similar if you were to use Canada Post to ship to the UK.
Country Post Offices are suppose to have agreements in place when sending / receiving int'l post letters/packages.
I doubt UPS would be involved. I hope it's British Air Mail, as it's nice to see their stamps of the queen ;) Just like our stamps :cheesygri

The production is mastered in 25p from various framerates (details on bbcresources.com); the PAL DVD is in 50i (equivalent to 25p) and each episode runs for 48 minutes compared to 50 minutes on Blu-ray. So the runtime is in keeping with a 25p to 24p slowdown on Blu-ray. The 1080i v. 1080p feud has been blown out of all proportions: not everything if anything at all was shot in 1080p and cameras used a few years ago were mostly 720p. Note it says on the back some shots are in standard definition only. There are artefacts in some scenes. People who find Blu-ray to be softer than HD broadcast have incorrect set-up somewhere in the video signal chain: it is not the fault of the Blu-ray.
The Narration and Sound Track
Sir David only narrates in the background; occasionally his voice is a shade too soft compared to the music. The script is very well written, full of interesting statistics and entirely appropriate without being verbose. The music when present adds to the serenity of the magnificent scenery or the drama of hunting scenes.
The Substituted Extras (1080i)
Regrettably this release does not have the original DVD extras: the "Making of" featurettes and the 'Planet Earth - The Future' feature and people felt let down. The message on the state of the planet is of course important and the studio underestimated the viewer's sentiment. But the extras included here, Dessert Lions and Snow Leopards from the BBC's Natural World in HD are interesting programmes in their own right and more amenable to repeated viewing. The biologist who tagged collars on the snow leopards died recently so that makes it even more valuable to watch. But it would be better to give us the original extras and have Natural World on a separate release.

I must be the only moron on the planet who has very little knowledge about this documentary. Oh, I have heard about it, and given that it is a BBC production, I have no doubt it's excellent. I just feel like a ****** for ordering one when I don't even know for sure what I am ordering!! Thanks OP for allowing me to spend another 50 bucks on something I don't need!!!
I believe people buy this mostly for reference material. This is what you play to show off your TV to your friends and boast about it. I could be wrong and many people actually care enough about the documentary to pay for it. But my hunch is that people are more in it for the eye candy.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Planet-Earth-Complete-BBC-Blu-ray/dp/B000SKNIWE/
This is the BBC version and has 5 discs. Region-Free. It adds to cart for less than listed price due to reduction of VAT I believe. After shipping it's about $48 Canadian.
Thanks OP. Ordered.

ok i got it yesterday shipping was fast
here are the FACTS
BBC UK ver is 5 BLU RAYS
4 discs are PE and the last disc is called "the natural world" it talks about desert lions and snow leopards. its like an add on ep
on the back of the box it says 1080i BUT the only thing that's 1080i is the BBC logo when you put in the disc and the menu screen the show is in FULL 1080p.

Wouldn't this version, with all the extra series/discs and content be a better bang for the buck? Blue Planet is a decent series, but I can't comment on the rest as I've never seen them. No indication of whether it's Weaver or Attenborough though. I MUST have the Attenborough version!

If so, I bought the DVD set last year from Costco... and would be willing to sell it for $20 plus shipping (shipping is around $10 in Canada I think)

From what I read earlier in the thread, disc 5 (which is essentially a bonus disc) is 1080i, while the rest of the UK set is 1080p.
1080i is definitely better than DVD quality.

Must be me, but when I tried one of the first 4 discs from the 5 disc version I thought the quality was a bit lower.
Why do they have to label the UK version 1080i? Is disc 5 the only one dubbed in SD-DVD?
I was wondering if the US version of 1080p is superior to the UK version of 1080i in video quality

thanks gtruck...I've been googling around for a bit on this question. Lots of people in Europe concerned about region free for them in that area but generally my experience has been that less people are interested in the ability to play discs from the UK in NA. I recently got a PS3 so I am not quite caught up on Blu Rays.
I haven't found anyone cleary stating that their PS3 in NA plays PAL region free Blu Rays. My PS3 won't play a PAL region free DVD.

If it's Canada Post pick-up, the $10.12 is most likely for $5.00 Canada Post handling plus the GST and PST on the value declared by the seller.
All else who didn't have to pay were lucky and so it does appear to be karma for that person. :(

I borrowed this set from a friend when it first came out. My family and I watched those discs almost every night. I can't say I had any of the technical issues you're mentioning.
Regarding the sound, does your TV output 5.1? I notice when I play discs through my TV, I can barely hear the voice. I always end up running the sound through my 5.1 speakers, and then it's fine.
I'll admit - Planet Earth is a more family oriented series than any of the usual wildlife shows. Most of the other stuff I've picked up over the years usually focuses on "Watch this cheetah rip apart it's meal!" or "Watch carefully as the baboon mounts a male! No wonder their population is going DOWN!"
Thankfully, my family finds it both fascinating and entertaining. There's very few things we can watch that will get the whole family together like this series does.

I haven't yet received mine but I only ordered a few days ago...a couple of points.
Don't worry about the long estimated delivery dates....sending things from the UK to Canada is usually pretty fast. I have lot's of experience here.
Also, sending it to yourself as a gift makes no difference whether you get to pay duty or not. I found this out the hardway when my Dad in the UK sent me a DVD box set for my birthday via amazon and I was dinged with $20.00 in taxes etc. Had HE sent it himself no taxes or duty but simply having Amazon send it as a gift doesn't count.
Either way with or without duty this is still a very good deal.

Was a spontaneous purchase, as I was just watching the NTSC version on Discovery that night. I will probably gift them, or make friends with 1080P ppl.

Got it yesterday.
Got to agree with the poster that said the box was cheap. It is, and mine was slightly bent at the top, but not a big deal.
Looks great, the quality of the footage and the way they put everything together is great.
NO Customs fees either!

This is the 5 disc difference:
From amazon.co.uk reviews: "A warning: It seems that the BBC has been cheese-paring and, as a result, the disc 5 extra included with the blu-ray version of this excellent series, entitled 'Natural World', is not at all the same as the disc 5 extra included with the standard DVD version of the series. Let me explain: Disc 5 of the blu-ray version, entitled 'Natural World', contains two separate documentaries; one entitled 'Desert Lions', and the second entitled 'Snow Leopards'. These two middling documentaries, also narrated by David Attenborough, although certainly watchable, do seem rather like an add-on, almost to fill space. In my opinion, they fall well short of the outstanding viewing quality of the main series, as shown on the first four discs in this five-disc box set.
However, the disc 5 extra included with the standard DVD version of 'Planet Earth' is entitled 'The Future', and this contains three excellent documentaries. These three documentaries (namely; ' Saving Species'; 'Into The Wilderness' and 'Living Together') amount to one complete whole: namely, a cry for action to save the future, our future. This is about global warming, habitat destruction, poaching, pollution, global overpopulation - all the threats to those magnificent animals and habitats - and ultimately ourselves - that we have just seen in the main series. The use of film footage from the main series (and some new film clips) - supported by a superb commentary both from the film-makers themselves and experts, including David Attenborough and others - carries a real impact. To give one example, the polar bear and global warming. Blu-ray customers never get to see the full picture about how this magnificent animal faces an increasing struggle to survive as global warming destroys its habitat - because this disc 5 gem is included as part of 'The Future' documentaries on the disc 5 extra with the standard DVD boxset, but not with the disc 5 extra of the blu-ray DVD boxset. Yet, in my opinion, these 'The Future' documentaries are essential viewing. So it really is inexcusable that they have been excluded from the disc 5 extra included with the blu-ray version of the 'Planet Earth' series."

I read this in the reviews as well even before I put my order in.... but for $44... it still seems to be worth the buy.
Being a person that has never seen the dvd or the blu-ray boxsets... I won't really know what I'm missing.
Ignorance is bliss.

To me the 5th disc is irrelevant. I would only care to know if the first 4 discs are exactly the same as the 4discs box set we have here in North America. If it is, then it's good enough for me. 5th was just a bonus anyway.
It's irrelevant to compare to DVD version because dvd was never an option to consider when we have blu ray.

Remember it listed at 25, but went down to 22.15 upon adding to cart, er, "basket." Now it's 18.23 once you go to checkout. That's just 3.92 more. But yes, you should be able to email amazon and get refunded your 3.92 pounds if you ordered recently.
UPDATE: Just emailed Amazon using their online form, I will post again when I hear back from them.

Well that would stink.
Since they accept returns withing 30 days, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to not do price protection within that time.
For their shoppers in the UK, free shipping would make the return a no-brainer.
It works out to about $15 difference for me, so I hope I get it, but I'm not feeling to positive about it.

Actually the price difference is about $7 dollars. You're comparing the VAT included current price with the VAT excluded old price.

20.95 is the price before the VAT is removed. The 22.15 you paid was based on a 25 pound pre VAT price.
VAT is removed after checkout. You would have been billed 18 pounds + shipping.

Not sure how you guys are getting $38 Cdn. When I ordered at £22.15, there was a £3.08 shipping fee for me. Total came to £25.23 or about $46 Cdn. So now that it is £20.97, you should still add the £3.08 to get £24.05. Doesn't that translate to around $43-$44 Cdn?

Wow, super hot price for the High-Def true British BBC version.
I already own the BBC DVD box set, as it was a lot cheaper last year than Blu-Ray and I wanted to see the diaries and the future disc.
I'm exited to see the documentary again in HD, I am absolutely going to order at this price. *Boom, pulled the trigger, hope I don't get charged duty*
I do have a question about the audio quality and encoding though. Does it use Dolby Digital 5.1 (or the newer Dolby HD/True HD stuff), or is it just digital 2 channel?
I had an issue with the Galapagos Blu-Ray, it's audio was encoded in 2 channel digital, and I had to change my PS3 from bitstream to PCM output in order to hear audio with my 5.1 system. Very odd, and the only Blu-Ray disc I've encountered that was like that. All my other blu-rays have great sound using bitstream, and my Z5500 detects it as DD5.1 or DTS. I'm hoping the Planet Earth has good 5.1 audio. It would be very disappointing to have worse sound than the DVDs. I've just searched the reviews on Amazon.co.uk, seems that the audio is DD5.1, should work ok.
Let me know for those who already have it. Thanks.

HAHA, they did raise the price. Wow I'm happy I made my impulse purchase lastnight at 1:30am. I already got the email this morning that my order has been dispatched.
I paid a total of 21 pounds, should be about $38 cad.

Damn, now I regret I didn't order last night. :(
New total (after 2.5% Visa conversion fees) is about CAD 45.
Update: Looks like price at BB has gone down $10 (now $79.99; price still at $89.99 at FS). It's obviously not a good deal but hopefully both FS and BB would realize at some point they are giving their businesses away to foreign competitors with their out-of-date, inflated prices on demanding items.

I got mine in the mail yesterday as well, 1.5 weeks ahead of the estimated date, and no duties!
I had to pay duties the last time I ordered from Amazon UK, so I'm 1 for 2.
Now why would you waste your money on something that's absolutely useless to you? If you have more disposable income to dispose, I'll PM you my bank account #.
hahah the funny thing is i cannot afford a ps3 now.. but i figured,-i am definitely getting one (partially for the blu-ray player).. it's just a matter of when (sometime in the next few months). i also figured that i will definitely be getting the planet earth series in hi-def so why not get it now when it's 50% off, to save money down the road.

well by that logic, amazon.ca is also losing customers to a foreign competitor, no?
the british site must just be trying to clear their stock or something like that..

What is so good about Planet Earth?
All it cost for your answer is approx. 40 loonies (providing you already have a BD player).
If after you finished the whole series and found that there's absolutely nothing amazing about this documentary, not a single scene, 40 of us in here will give you each a loonie back.
Wait! I am kidding, I am just speaking for myself. It is a good and informed piece of documentary to watch.

Lots of people on here had to pay customs fees. Some paid as much as $12 so yours isn't so bad. Like most things Canada Post does it is very hit or miss. At least you can take solace in the fact that you still ended up with a great deal compared to buying it here.

Couldn't resist. I was eyeing this for a while but the US version.
Saw it so much more expensive for the US version (4 disc) at so many places such as FutureShop / BestBuy or gawd knows HMV and Amazon.ca/com which I believe would be the US rather than UK version. 5 sweet discs.
Hope I don't get dinged with duties but it seems vast majority of people aren't here. I sent it as a gift so harder for customs people LOL Suspect it will just arrive in my mailbox in a week.
25.23 GBP = 44.2331 CAD
Ordered on Jan 7th, arrived today. That was fast, like 3 days in transit unless they count weekends! Straight to the mailbox so no customs/duties/taxes.
First time ordered from Amazon UK, but I believe have ordered from COM and definitely .CA. Wonder if that matters as far as volume of stuff ordered? I had it marked as a gift rather than merchandise or commercial if that matters too as far as not getting tagged.
What's the "2" in a box with the word "Entertain" below it mean on the back and also on the side? Is this the region as I thought this was supposed be region free? Or is this some sort of volume number of a collection?
Based on the number on the side saying BBCBD0001 I would surmise this is the BBC's first BD disc, so perhaps volume # doesn't correlate.
This is definitely region free, right?
Would like to know about other UK deals that are region free if possible. That Batman+Darknight collection looks pretty sweet but I have both movies now.

If you like documentaries and animals, you won't find better than this. Some of the shots they get are remarkable especially when they slow them down.
You can watch it with your kids. It's all about animals and nature. They don't show the animal kills in too much length or detail. Several quick shots of animals mating but it's not animal porn if that's what you're afraid of.

There are cheap DVD players here in Canada that can be easily "hacked" using the remote control to make them play any region standard DVDs . e.g. I bought a Diamond DVD player from Walmart which I easliy hacked and use to play my UK DVDs.
It tends to be the cheap ones that can be converted - companies with a vested interest in the movie industry usually cannot e.g. Sony.
I'm not aware of any hackable Blu-ray dvd players.

Here is a hack posted by an owner of a Samsung BDP-1500 (not me I'm thinking of getting one) which is a popular model and a subject of a current popular thread.
....................................
Region code hack posted by khkim, November 03 2008:
I coundn't hack my DVD for 3 months and I almost gave up.
Now I did it today. I used the same script that 'Silver Surfers' posted for DVD-HD860. (Thanks again!)
My region code is 1 & version starts with '040808.02...'. My remote is 000613J.
You don't need special code for your current region ('2-9-3-3-4' stuffs). It never worked for me. Samsung probably have changed the firmware and it seems easier for region hack!!!
1. OFF/ON your DVD
2. Open the tray
3. Press 'INFO', you'll see version code
4. Press '9' repeatedly untill you see '9' overlapped with the version code
5. OFF/ON and enjoy!
I didn't expect it would work so I pressed '9' like crazy and I recognized '9' already appeared. I don't know how many times I pressed (maybe 10 times?). It doesn't matter because I would never try it again. If you find exactly how many times it requires, just let me know.

To be nice to you too, I will tell you that some Blu-Ray have region code...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Region_codes
Took the following from Wikopedia. Looks like it may be possible to work out which Blu-Ray DVDs on Amazon.co.uk are region free.
Region codes
Regions for Blu-ray standard
A: East Asia (except Mainland China and Mongolia), Southeast Asia, the Americas and their dependencies.
B: Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Russia), Oceania and their dependencies.
C: Central Asia, East Asia (Mainland China and Mongolia only), South Asia, central Eurasia and their dependencies.
Blu-ray Discs may be encoded with a region code, intended to restrict the area of the world in which they can be played, similar in principle to the DVD region codes, although the used geographical regions differ. Blu-ray Disc players sold in a certain region may only play discs encoded for that region. This is primarily used for market segmentation, or price discrimination, but it also allows motion picture studios to control the various aspects of a release (including content and release date) according to the region. Discs may also be produced without region coding, so they can be played on all devices. The countries of the major Blu-ray manufacturers (Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, etc.) are in the same region as the Americas. As of late 2008, almost 70% of all released discs were region-free.[51]
Major studios have different region coding policies. Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios have released all of their titles region free.[52][53] Sony Pictures and Warner Bros have released most of their titles region free, but titles released by Warner's New Line division were, initially, region-coded but subsequently have been released without being locked. Titles released by other labels on behalf of New Line are still subject to some region locking.[54][55] Lionsgate and Walt Disney Pictures have released a mix of titles that were region free and region coded.[56][57] 20th Century Fox has released all but three of their titles region coded.[58]
In the Blu-ray region coding system, the United States is placed in region A while regions B and C are used for countries which can experience localization delays before U.S. titles are officially released. The opposite, though, is sometimes true and a few new titles such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Running Scared were released in certain European countries before the U.S. release.[59] In response to the DVD region system, multi-region and region-free DVD players became dominant in certain markets; certain Blu-ray player models have been modified to allow for playback of Blu-ray and DVD discs with any region code

I picked The Dark Knight Blu-Ray with my Planet Earth order...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001CEE1WG
I ordered it mainly because of the Blu-Ray cover which I haven't seen one like that in Canada....
It's Region 2 and it plays no problem on my NTSC Sony PS3 no probs...
I was kind of worried it would not play but it does!

The uk version of band of brothers is region free, for a list of disks and if they are region free or not check Here (http://www.blurayregioncodes.com/index.php?region=b) just select the region at the top and look on the list, UK titles are region B ;)

According to the above most Warner Brothers discs are actually region free - I guess this standardizes production. Interesting the box says region 2 though.

Are you sure your laptop can even play Blu-Ray discs? AFAIK there aren'y very many Blu-Ray equipped laptops to be begin with, and by the way you worded your question, it doesn't sound like you checked your format before ordering...

All DVD discs have region codes that prevent you watching a DVD from outside your region. In our case, North America is region 1, while UK/Europe region 2.
Now you probably won't be able to watch the DVD on your standalone, unless you know it's hackable. I won't get into that, but Google it and who knows what comes up.
So your only solution is to watch the DVD on your laptop using VLC which ignores region lockout codes.

As far as I know, many DVD players are hackable. After hacking, your DVD player will be region free. Most of the time is just pressing a series of buttons on your remote. Google up your DVD model number or get more info from videohelp.com

Yeah, don't blame amazon for your mistake. You should have clarified whether the DVD's were region-free. ppl here only said the BR was region-free not the DVD's.
Answering your question: Yes you are screwed. However you could probably try maybe selling it on ebay to someone that can play it. You might lose some money since you opened it, but it's still better than using em as coasters.
Or use one of the solutions above :P

Do you know what Google is? It is your best friend. Try typing in those 3 letters and see what results you get.
I don't mean to pick on you, but the moment you do not know something, your first instinct reaction should be to Google it. We live in an information rich generation, and you need to learn the ability to search and filter out for information you require. Inability to do this is unacceptable in this day and age.

what is VLC?
VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html) is a media player for the PC which will play just about any media you try to open with it.
If you play a DVD with it, it will ignore the region coding on the dvd (unlike unhacked DVD players).
In general, many users highly prefer it to Windows Media Player as well.

Hello yakkers,
It is not Amazon's place to warn people from other countries, about region coding. Imagine for a moment, how many orders Amazon.co.uk receive from Countries, other than the UK and it would involve a lot of wasted man power to do, what you suggested.
Your post is also OT as this thread is about the Blu-ray version.
As other people have mentioned, Google is your best friend.

Yes - there are many hackable SD DVD players, usually the cheapest ones as there is no money in the budget to build regional versions. Apparently some are even multi-region out of the box. I bought a Diamond player from Walmart about 2 years ago for $20 which I use to play the DVDs I brought with me to Canada when I moved here from the UK.
Laptops (or rather the DVD player software in them ) usually alow you to change the region a few times and then "stick" on say the fifth change so be careful you don't inadvertantly make it a region 2 player.

I'm picking up this Blue Ray.
I noticed while browsing the site that they have the PS3 HDMI cable for £2.95.Worth adding to the cart if you're picking this up.
I also see Little Big Planet for £17.99. Will this play in North America? If so, I'm grabbing it too for that price.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-LittleBigPlanet-PS3/dp/B0019CGTXK/ref=pd_sim_vg_h__6
Update: I tried to buy it and they won't ship the game to Canada. Let me know if anyone has better luck.

LBP works fine on North America PS3s. I know, because my friend just got his UK copy last week and we played it on his PS3.
However, the save data has to match the same disc region. IE: We played my NA copy of LBP and saved data on his PS3. But his UK LBP wouldn't load my NA LBP save data. Get it?

All I gotta say is wow! I just watched the first episode "Pole to pole" and it is breath taking. When my mom comes over to visit next time I gotta say this is what HD is all about.
The slow motion photography is amazing. The shark grabing the seal in mid air (oops sorry spoiler LOL!)
The narrator is awesome too and I imagine way better than Sigourney could do.
I gotta say wow one more time. Wow!
This was the best $46-48 I've spent in a long time. That was 45 minutes and there are 2 more episodes on this disc and 4 more discs.
I have to agree, finally received mine yesterday, no duties (yay), and watched Pole to Pole with amazement.... and David is a terrific Narrator.
I noticed while browsing the site that they have the PS3 HDMI cable for £2.95.Worth adding to the cart if you're picking this up.
You can get those cables right now for less than $10 at RCSS... they are the SONY branded ones, as well, you can get the 2 pack of HDMI and USB cable if you can find it for $9.94 as well, and the Optical Audio cable, for $4.94

Amazon UK can not calculate shipping or adjust the VAT until it knows where you are. Link shows 24.98. In my cart it is 21.72 + 3.08 = $24.80 shipped. At todays exchange this is under $44 cdn. I believe this has all been covered several times in this thread.
Except for a few hours around January 8/9 the price has remained the same as op.

Currently interested in this deal. However, is there any truth to the UK edition being 1080i and the North America being 1080p?
The four main discs are 1080p and the fifth disc is 1080i (perhaps an upconversion from SD).
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_Earth_(TV_series))
2 entertain, which publishes and distributes BBC programming on DVD, produced four-disc high-definition versions of Planet Earth on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD in the US. The boxed sets were released on 24 April 2007, just after the series ended its run on the Discovery Channel.[8] Both the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions feature high-definition transfers (in 1080p resolution, although these releases are labelled as 1080i on the back cover of the packing)[citation needed] of the original UK broadcast, as narrated by David Attenborough — even though the US Discovery Channel broadcast featured Sigourney Weaver as its narrator. The Blu-ray set contains four single-layer BD-25 discs,[9] while the HD DVD set uses four dual-layer HD DVD-30 discs.[10] Except for a small amount of extremely hard-to-obtain footage,[11] the series was originally filmed entirely in high definition.[12] However, the high-definition releases omit the extra disc of bonus features that is present on the standard-definition boxed set.[13] The Blu-ray region B boxed set and HD DVD boxed set (as sold in countries such as the UK and New Zealand [14]) includes a fifth disc containing two episodes from the BBC Natural World series, "Desert Lions" and "Snow Leopard: Beyond the Myth". It is not known exactly why the standard definition and high-definition versions have this differing content but given that the Natural World content is in 1080i it is hypothesised that the Planet Earth Diaries and Planet Earth: The Future were filmed in standard definition only, and that there was an intention to avoid standard definition material where possible in the Blu-ray release.

$24.80 pounds, after $3.08, shipping was the total. It said "VAT $0.00" at the checkout, I though VAT would give some sort of discount, or what?

VAT = Value Added Tax.
Unlike North America, a lot of European countries display prices with the sales tax (VAT) INCLUDED.
Therefore, since your shipping address is on this side of the pond, they have removed the VAT....

In my experience, customs is random on low cost items such as this. Probably less than 10% of the times for items costing less than $75 there is a small fee as some have reported. But don't quote me on that.
That is when an item is shipped by government postal services.

It wasnt worth the hassle for me, but then again im not a penny pincher so paying a bit more for convenience is ok with me.
In this case it's $50 pincher...

That's funny, I didn't hear about a tax hike...then again, you would think a 79% increase in taxes would cause some sort of stir...:|
edit: Oh, and what a poor excuse for an RFDer, spending 60% more on something...for shame, mr. kat...I guess having that low 5% tax didn't save you money this time after all! hahh!

LOL yea exactly. Assuming $45CAD after conversion, and him paying $79.99+tax, he effectively paid a 77.78% RFD impatient tax :O
With its proximity to 79%, I think Albertans are the one who wants a 79% tax hike XD

For those wondering about randomness of duties, customs, etc... A while back, I had an item come from the US, through Ebay, and the envelope was empty, Customs, after I asked about it, said it was that way when they got it, but I asked why they chose that envelope, was told by a Customs inspector in the Windsor sorting facility, that it is completely random. I am sure that some packages catch their eye, but for others, it is random. As far as marking it as a gift, remember, this does not work when shipped from a BUSINESS. Even though you can send an item as a gift, I think it may be packaged differently and the invoice will go to you, not the recipient, it is SENT as a gift package, but CUSTOMS still treats it as incoming goods, subject to the Regulations of that Country, might be different if the sister lives in the US, or Europe etc...

I've been curious about this documentary for a while. I found this thread (can't recall how, probably Google, but I shoulda really just checked here first... heh) and decided to give it a go.
here's how it shows up on my credit card:
2009-01-22 AMAZON EU AMAZON.CO.UK AMT 24.80 POUND STERLING $44.72
No duties.
It arrived yesterday, 2009-01-27. Haven't watched it yet (was busy getting my Platinum Trophy in Fallout 3!), but I was impressed by the view on the box. :)
Thanks OP for this awesome deal. Had I bought it locally, it'd be about $89.99 + 13% tax, so I saved over $56!
Amazon.ca is selling it for $79.99 ($69.99 using MAPNEWNCSAVE), though, so I technically only saved $34. Still, that's enough to make it worth it, especially with that bonus disc and David's narration.

I almost bought this from FS couple of weeks ago. I would have paid $100 including 12% taxes here in BC. But once I saw this tread went for it and ordered on 21-Jan and received on 26-Jan. First time I ordered anything from outside North America, but this must be the fastest delivery ever. Playing great on my PS3. Credit card charged me CA$44. No extra duties/taxes. So I saved $56 + saved time going to the store. Also heard there is an extra disk in this UK version. Thanks RFD. Are there any other differences in this set compared to Canadian version ?

I remember reading someone confirming somewhere in the thread that the actual main feature is 1080p. Menus and the last disc (i think) was 1080i.
And yes, our version here says 1080i as well, but you only get 4 discs.

These BR discs look amazing. I love that they use the entire screen (unlike my other Blue Rays, which don't, unless I stretch the picture).
There must be something wrong with your setup then. If you are talking about black bars, this will occur on all films with aspect rations > 1.78:1 (on a widescreen TV). With 1.85:1 you don't see it either because of the overscan on your TV, but 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 will show black bars which is the way the film was intended to be seen.

No, I don't.
It's straightforward. The aspect ratio of Planet Earth is 1.78:1. 16/9 = 1.78 to 1. It fills the entire screen naturally. The aspect ratio of my other Blue Rays is primarily 2.4:1. Therefore, you have black bars. I like the 1.78 on Planet Earth because it uses my entire screen. It looks good.

I'm displaying at 1080px24hz, should that be 60hz? I'm a noob at this stuff, since I wasn't the one who bought the screen (never researched it).24hz is what you want. Not all TVs can do 24hz.
hz refers to how many times a second the TV is refreshing. 24hz = 24 times a second. 60 hz = 60 times a second. 120 hz = 120 times a second.
You'd think more is better, but movies are filmed at 24 frames a second. So if the TV refreshes 24 times a second and there are 24 frames a second, you get 1 new frame every time the screen refreshes. Even exposure to each frame.
With 60 refreshes for 24 frames, you don't get an even number. As a result, one frame is shown for 3/60 of a second while the next is shown for 2/60. This alternates between the two so you get 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2... instead of 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1... This causes a more jittery motion, especially in slow pans.
TV shows are filmed at 30 fps though (more specifically 29.97 I believe) so your tv will be in 60hz for that stuff.

Contact your local post office? They should normally leave a delivery notice card and leave it to pickup, but since these package are not marked against "safe drop", they do it because of lazyness?

I notice even if packages say "do not safe drop", they just leave it in the mailbox anyways. Amazon packages always just show up in the mailbox without them knocking or leaving a notice. It just get delivered with the regular mail.

Royal mail is still handled by CanadaPost, so if the parcel fit in the mailbox and is not too heavy, the postman on duty can pick it up? else it gets delivered by truck

There are picture quality issues with this BBC version. I am not 100% certain that the US discovery version is better, but I think it might. Most of this series is breath taking, but some is just awful - like vhs awful. This is definitely the actual source material as some of it is filmed in SD. Look at "Fresh Water".... at the beginning there is alot of grain on rock faces and even a strobe type of flickering effect. This occurs on both the BD and HDDVD versions.

If the source is SD, which it has been established that some of it is, the Discovery version will not be any better.

You're right, the only diff is the narrator and the BBC has some extra footage. Still it should be known that both versions have some serious video noise in some scenes. I would be embaressed to showcase some of it for friends.

I could be way off here, but is there a correlation between having to pick up your copy from the post office after receiving a delivery card and getting hit by taxes? Has anyone here that had to pick it up spared? Still contemplating whether I should pick this up or not, knowing that I have to pick up all packages from the post office which sucks for me.

You get hit at the border/sorting center, not at your local post office, which only do COD if needed (collect on delivery)

The answers to both questions are, it depends.
I'll assume you know about the thread from last time since you know other people already have it. Details about the duties are there. Basically nothing or $5 + tax.
For shipping, you can try to check out, should tell you how much shipping costs before you actually commit to buying it.

Two problems:
1. They are currently out of stock

The Amazon.UK set includes 5 discs... bonus disc called Natural World, Desert Lions and Snow Leopards.
