View Full Version : Canon A570 IS Question

I'll look this up in the manual when I can find it, but until then I hope there is a quick answer (which I haven't been able to find online). What is the purpose for being able to detach the little ring around the lens on the A570? From what I can tell, you can't detach the lens, so it can't be for adding a separate lens, could it?
As I said I don't have my manual right now...I need to search through a few boxes for that. Thanks!

As with previous A series cameras the ring around the base of the lens can be removed to allow the attachment of wide or tele converters.

Thank-you - trust me I have read through a lot of reviews and none of them seemed to mention anything about the removable ring.
As a relatively uninformed camera user (as far as different lenses are concerned), when it says "wide or tele converters", it's not talking about different lenses, correct? Just an attachment that will enhance the existing lens?

Yes, its just an add on. You need an adapter that attaches to the lens and then you put the wide or tele on that.
I am guessing you found that the ring comes off with a push of the little button on the bottom right.
Some have it some dont, so if there is no button, then the camera will not support the add ons.
EDIT: ok, bottom left on yours! my two cameras have it on the right, weird.

Yeah, I always knew about the button/removable ring but it's something I sort of skimmed over when I first got the camera - I was just happy with the upgrade from the previous Powershot I had (I forget the model number, but it it is pretty limited in what it can do) ;)
But even though I can't get a full-on new lens, just extending the camera's range is definitely something that will keep me happier later on down the road before looking at a new camera :)
Thanks!

I too have been looking into getting the tele converter for my Canon A650, and I have read many places that its best to go with Canon as the cheaper lenses dont turn out a good quality photo.
Just something to think about.

Good to know. I haven't even started researching lenses because, as this thread is evidence, I didn't know whether I was looking for a new lens itself or an attachment. I figure I could try my luck with ebay anyway to save some money, if I find something suitable in stores.

Just did a quick search, this seems to be a decent price - http://www.adorama.com/ICATCDC52A.html?sid=1229463911251337
I would bet that even Future Shop/Best Buy offer a better price than that.

I found that the detached ring is most useful for attaching filters. You can buy an adapter from dealextreme.com and attach a polarizing filter on it.

I won't suggest you buying a tele converter. It is better to upgrade to a 10X zoom or more camera such as Canon SX100 IS or SX10 IS and sell the A570 IS. Image quality will be much better.

I dont agree. I have looked at pictures taken with the tele converter and they look great.
The SX100 does not have the greatest grip and the SX10 is too big. The A series is a great sized camera and has a good grip for taking pictures.

How? Because 10X is bigger than 4X? Please explain.

Correct me if I'm wrong. There is a 2-stop loss in exposure in a 2X tele converter and 1-stop loss in exposure in a 1.4X tele converter, so basically one can only use a 2X tele converter without using a tripod in a sunny day if keeping ISO under 200. But not every day is sunny and I don't think many people like to carry a tripod all the time. Moreover the image quality from a tele converter is nowhere near to that from a Canon zoom lens.
Canon SX100 IS is less than $200 now and why spend close to $100 to buy a tele converter and an adapter.

Oh, didn't see you were talking about the teleconverter...

I've bought a couple of used lenses off ebay and never had any problems. Just make sure to check feedback and read the auction description carefully.
