I am currently with Telus, I am about to sign another contract and I really want a Touch Pro, main reasons are:
-wifi
-movie playback
-keyboard
-office documentation
-mods / hacks

that said, I do not want to pay the full data plan for smartphones. I need minimal or zero browsing and data transfers since I am in wifi area most of the time.

so my question is:
Is it possible to have the HTC Touch Pro under a budget contract ($30taxin)??

u dont need a data plan for a smart phone

you just probably have to pay the difference between the phone (no contract cost - the credit that telus gives u for the signing of the new three year contract)

Yes you can get it without the data plan, but your going to have to pay I think 100 or so dollars more on the phone.

that's great, thanks, then I will probably slurge and go for the touch Pro.. :)

thanks!

Another question now, is the unlimited data plan from telus really unlimited? Because I want to hook up my slingbox to the HTCTP

I would suggest you look into the HTC Pro's wifi capabilities first before you make a decision. I had your thinking too, thinking I wouldn't need the telus data plan because I would use my phone's wifi. My phone is probably 1-2 generations older than yours (HTC P4000) but my wifi capabilities franky suk. I could never keep a stable connection and there isn't as much free wifi out there as I would have thought.
I would hope/think that the HTC Pro's capabilities are better and perhaps you have more generous people in your area willing to let people leech their wifi.

I was forced into getting the data plan as a compromise with telus after dealing with them directly to get a customized plan. I'm glad I conceded to them this point because I use the data capabilities relentlessesly for google maps, and general web browsing when I'm out and bored. To make it better, they gave me an old plan (15 bux for unlimited). I don't use that much myself, maybe 100 megs a month, but its nice to know I have no limit.

However, you mention that you won't be using it that much. If it does turn out that you do use it more than you would have thought, try to see if you can get this old data plan they used to hand out. Hope this helps.

When I purchased my Blackberry last December I was told that all I need to to get Blackberry is sign up for a voice + data plan for a minimuim of one year. They told me after one year I can drop the data plan (which I'm never cause I have unlimited data for $15/month) and just keep the voice. True or not I'm not sure since every represenative says different things. Best thing to do is call up client care and talk to a representative.

If you have to get a data plan I suggest you get the cheapest data plan out there which would probably be something like IM and Email and bundle it up with an affordable voice plan.

i'm pretty sure you need to sign up for a plan that matches a min. price for the phone to be subsidized. ex. for rogers smartphones, min. $45 data & voice combined

if they do offer me $15/unlim for the htctp, i'll go for it... i'll ask them about it.
thanks!

I will probably ask for the 15/unlim. data, if i don't get it, i'll probably just use the phone as a phone + computer with wifi.

I don't mind buying the phone outright.

thanks for all the suggestions/comments so far.

Good luck getting the 15/unlimited data. That plan is 1 year old and they dont offer it anymore. They might give it to you if you ask, but personally I doubt it. I'm not trying to be rude or anything. Its just that my friend wasnt able to get it back in June, but what he was able to do was get the $45 data plan for $30. But it doesnt hurt to try. Good Luck.

I got it earlier this year, Feb or March. I was told it was a grandfathered plan, but they might have just been lying to make me think it was a good deal. I've since learned they were offering it out to people on a limited time basis sometime in the past year. I was in the process of renewing my contract so I had some leverage against them because I kept coming back to them with Bell offers.

If you have a good payment/contract history with them, all you have to do is suggest your looking at other companies. That'll put you in a good position and maximize your chances of getting this deal.
