View Full Version : What is..."clubbing"?

Unlike self-proclaimed experts, I do not know much about clubbing, other than a few clubs here and there.
So, when someone goes clubbing, what exactly do they do? I imagine you go to the door, pay the cover fee (sometimes they pay you..lol Picadilly?) and then...?
What type of clubs are they? What if you listen to a bit of techno every now and then, but are more of a hip-hop fan?
Is there a dress-code? When I go out, I usually wear dark jeans, a thin sweater with a dress shirt below, with either Pumas or AF1's. I hear you can't wear running shoes or jeans, you must wear dress shoes and dress pants :| Isn't that business-casual??
What time does they start and end? I think most start earliest 10pm, and can go on well into the morning, like 3-4AM?
Is it weird to go alone? Is there anything good on the radar? I want to go to one probably January onwards, cause I'm going to be in the downtown core Thursday nights as well from now on.

And I don't dance either, I can attempt to do the crip-walk, but I only do it when I shoot in someone's mug.

u pretty got it down. if u aren't shy bout going alone then its all good.. but things happen though, so its good to have a friend. u should go get a buzz or get drunk at the bar asap, and then dance close to chicks. and wear dress shoes.

I think what OP meant was that some clubs have a dress code - which is true. In other words, no jeans/running shoes.

There are lots of different clubs. Hip-hop clubs, techno clubs, top-40's clubs, etc.
Some have dresscode (no jeans or running shoes), but not all.
Most open around 9pm, but usually it is dead until 11pm-midnight. Then it picks up. A lot of clubs increase cover after a certain time (usually midnight) to try to encourage people to come earlier. In Ottawa anyway, not sure about elsewhere, they aren't allowed to serve alcohol after 2am, so most bars close at around 3am. There are some after-hours clubs which don't serve alcohol (usually cater to the ravers who are still trippin on E, so they don't need booze anyway) and they can be open until 7am or a bit later, but those are the exception rather than the rule.
Usually when you go to a club, you go to drink, hang out with friends, dance, or pick up. Generally speaking.

In Ottawa anyway....
Honestly speaking, there are no 'real' clubs in Ottawa. Only bars with small dance floors. Go to clubs in Toronto - night and day in comparison. =)

True. I have only been to one club in Toronto (circa), but Montreal's club scene is good too I hear. Nothing in Ottawa comes even close to Circa. Not even close.

You dress up more than you would going to the mall (standard guy's clubbing uniform is a striped button shirt, dark pants, and semi-dressy shoes), drink, socialize, and dance. Clubs may have theme nights and/or specialize in a certain genre of music and the really big ones will have different types of music on different floors but that's about it!
