Often, a municipality will have a complaint line you can call if a neighbour hasn't shoveled after xx hours. The city will send a crew to clean the walk, and a bill to your neighbour.

THE best Christmas present Canada Post letter carrier Les Daniels could get this year is for residents to shovel and salt their walkways.
"I wouldn't mind a Cadillac, but that would be out of the question," said Daniels when asked about his Christmas wish list. "The best thing is to move the mailbox down so we don't have to go up the stairs, or salt the stairs."

Daniels needed shoulder surgery after slipping on ice four years ago.

In Winnipeg, 65 letter carriers were injured last year after slipping on unshovelled walkways. That resulted in 1,030 days lost from work. Manitoba Hydro Utility Services employees also lost 188 days of work last winter as a result of slip, trip and fall injuries.

To help prevent more injuries, Canada Post teamed up with local businesses for a contest called Clear the Way and Win.

"The goal of the program is to prevent injuries, especially in a climate like ours," said Kathi Neal, Canada Post spokeswoman. "We have an awful lot of snow here. Clearing your driveways and pathways to mail boxes, you can save people from the heartbreaking injuries happening."

Daniels was off work for six weeks recovering from the surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, he said.

"It had just snowed the night before and I went up on one side of the steps and went down the other side," Daniels said. "There was ice under there and I didn't see the ice. I stepped and went flying."

Newspaper distributors also have a hard time during the winter months. Dean Lytle, director of audience develop for the Free Press, addressed the dangers of newspaper distributors Thursday during a press conference launching the contest.

"We have 1,400 newspaper distributors that deliver 365 days a year, almost 1 million footsteps on your doorstep every year," Lytle said. "Let's make sure we take care of those 1 million footsteps."

The contest runs six weeks, with a $200 Home Depot gift certificate given away each week. The grand prize will be given away in week six -- a nine horsepower snowblower.

To win, a pledge form must be signed by homeowners, promising to keep their pathways clear of ice and snow. If they win, they have to prove they followed through on that promise.

Ballots can be found at www.winnipegfreepress.com, in the newspaper and at Home Depot locations.

Letter mail should be obsolete soon anyways, all I ever get is bills and junk mail. As for the bills you can get rid of paper ones through epost now, and the junk mail, who needs it!

This isn't really an issue in my neighborhood seeing everyone has to pick up their own mail from a central mailbox hub.

While it would be nice to clear the sidewalks off at 7am in the morning for those who need them but unfortunately it can't be done for some. That is why you have 24hrs from the end of a snow fall to remove it.

Me personally I'm not going to take my one year old outside at 7am so I can shovel, neither will I leave him in the house alone while I do it. I'll shovel it when I can get to it, not really a priority compared to the care of my child, sorry.

I am quite sure it is in the postal union contract that they *DO NOT* have to deliver mail to you if your walkway is not shoveled.

I know in at least one instance my mailman did not deliver my mail because I hadn't shoveled yet when he arrived (was a real downpour). I don't blame him at all, and I wasn't upset, I doubt he was too upset either, he just didn't deliver it.

IMO letter carries should just exercise these rights and not do the delivery to these people. I don't see why anyone needs to make a big deal about it - don't shovel, don't get your mail, finally shovel, get it tomorrow. It is not that big a deal, either for the carrier or the home owner. if you want your mail in a timely fashion, then shovel your walk, simple as that.

Just remember that you posted this self-centered opinion if you ever need an emergency service at your home. Just remember that it may take a paramedic an extra 5 or 10 minutes to get into your home because he has to shovel his way in before he can get to your 1 year old and administer care. Hope you still feel the way you do in this post if the worst happens in your home. Just forget about the other folks in this world that have no choice but to walk or have mobility issues. Forget the elderly who may fall and break a hip on your sidewalk and now have to move into a nursing home. Forget about the poor, young mom who just wants to take her child to the park to play in the snow... Yep just forget them all and concentrate on your own little self-absorbed world and we will all be better off...

Easy there, Marx.

Striking isnt the answer, but I wouldnt expect a letter carrier to put themselves in harms way.
To be honest, I'm always surprised when we get mail during bad weather. I dont think they should be out at all. Just about anything can wait a day or so.
Similarly, dont expect people to be out shovelling within an hr of a snow storm either. Anything within say 18 hrs seems fair to me.

Sheesh, everyones so uptight around here. People need to take a breather and relax more

Buy a house without a sidewalk. :)

All kidding aside, shoveling when the snow is fresh is much easier than when its been trampled or laying around for a day. I'm one of the weird ones that enjoy shoveling at 6am when the 'hood is nice and quiet.

Then I rip the cord and run the obnoxious engine of my snow blower to give the neighbors a friendly warning that it has snowed overnight, get your a$$ out of bed!!!

Good advice for lazy folks.

I also definitely agree that snow should be shovelled as soon after its fallen as you can manage. Its so much easier. When I'm expecting big snowfalls, i normally make a couple of trips so that its easier to shovel all the snow.

Ahh...to live in a condo again...(where snow shovelling and lawn moving is a common item that we pay someone else to do).

Wery well put... I go agree with you 100%... I have few houses on my street that never shovel till the sidewalk become pure ice!! I walk my dog at 5AM everyday and it's not the safest thing in the world to walk on the road till you bypass those sidewalks... Last year I started putting de-icer on these houses sidewalk early in the evening. I remember one dude coming out asking what I'm doing! the answer was "de-icing your sidewalk since you poor and cant afford salt!".

Stupid Mississauga, they don't have by-laws to force homeowners to shovel thier sidewalks! And our useless consulter Mrs. Pat pretty much said “sorry nothing we can do”,

EDMONTON, Alberta, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- An Edmonton man returning to Canada was
arrested at the airport for failing to shovel his sidewalk while he was gone,
the Globe and Mail reported.
Zafir Rashid was informed of the warrant for his arrest by Canada Customs
officers at Calgary International Airport when he arrived Tuesday.
"I thought they were joking," Rashid said. He was placed in a detention cell to
wait for Calgary police to pick him up, and told the newspaper he convinced
customs he didn't merit handcuffs or a strip search.
Because he had been out of the country for three months, he was unaware of the
warning mailed to his home, saying he had 48 hours to remove all snow and ice
from his sidewalk. He also hadn't seen the citation mailed to him, meaning an
arrest warrant was generated.
Rashid spent all day Wednesday sorting out the legal mess, and paid the $85
fine.

In our neighborhood most would probably be livid about a snowblower at 5am. 7 is fair game around here generally depending on what shift everyone is on. We all know each other and each other's shift's and respect those shifts. Heck I am sure some of my neighbors would be livid is hubby shovelled or snowblowed according to his schedule, he's up and out the door at 2am. ;) Would he ever consider doing that, no way in hell because we have respect for each other's shifts. My beef is people who don't shovel or snow blow at all! It's ignorant IMO to not consider people that really need to walk on public sidewalks. But then again those types of folks are the very first to scream blue murder when an ambulance, police, fire truck can't get down their street (due to not being plowed due to parked cars) and EMS, etc. can't get to their door because they aren't shovelled out.

So long as you shovel within the 24 hour period, then that's quite a reasonable expectation IMO.

In fact, our town gives itself 24 hours to clean all roadways

Anyone who is whining and complaining that the shoveling has to be be done by 7 a.m. or so is simply being petty IMO.
