So we are in this goofed up situation with Rogers where even though our contract is expired as of 6 months ago they refuse to give my wife a new phone with a 3 year renewal, even though if she was a "new customer" we could get this.

So - what defines a new customer? Can we cancel and just sign up again the next day as a "new customer"? Has anyone ever done this? I really don't think she would care much if her phone number changed.

i'm pretty sure a "new customer" is someone who is not in their system. so, if you cancel and sign up again the next day, rogers probably still has a record of your account in their system.

Yes you sure can.

Mind you...I'm sure I've spoken to you about several solutions many a time in past...why do you insist on going about this quite honestly the WORST way possible? It's just more grief that you could possibly ever want., plus you'd lose your number.

pm once and for all.:|

I would phone retentions. They will give you a new phone for free. If not tell them to suck a di({ and threaten to leave to telus. Try this atleast 3 to 5 times. Once your fed up, or get a good deal stop. If you dont get a good deal, sign with telus or bell.

any phone deals you see are for new contracts, not so much new customers. You COULD port your number to a new account and get the promo pricing on whatever you wanted, but rogers doesn't like that.

Or you could call retentions, and probably get promo pricing anyways. If you haven't done an upgrade in 2 years or so (can't remember the exact date) you should automatically get any phone on rogers pricing (rogers store's 3 year contract price) regardless of how much revenue you've had.

what phone were you trying to upgrade? some phones require data plans to get the lower price, like blackberries, n95, any winmo phone, most of the 3g phones require a vision plan to get the lower pricing.

brunes is a smart cookie. I doubt he/she's not yet explored the retention route...I think there's something more to the whole scenario...either that or they're just plagued with bad luck. It really makes no sense...but heck..whadduIknow.
Wish you Luck!

it is my understanding that rogers considers people to be new customers if they have stopped receiving service from them for 90 days.

Retentions has been a dead end for us because we are on pretty much the lowest Rogers tier possible. This is because for the past two years we have had a RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP plan. We have caller ID / Name display / voicemail / who called/ 200 anytime minutes / evenings + weekends at 6 PM / CANADA WIDE MY5, all for $21 / month plus $6.95 SAF, minus 15% bundle discount. Comes out to < $28 taxes and E911 fee included.

Anyway, that plan has been great, but because we have hardly been paying any money to Rogers for our whole contract, we are on the crappiest HUP tier possible, and they simply will not negotiate with us much. There are a couple of phones we can get for $0, but the Perl is not one of them, not unless we commit to a data plan, which we do not want or need (the main reason my wife wants the Perl is because it has GPS, she does not care about emal or web at all and will not use them).

I think what may end up happing is just buying off eBay again, which is what I have done twice over the past two years. It boggles my mind that Rogers feels justified asking for $350 for the Pearl when I can buy a brand new unlocked one off eBay for < $150. I just don't get how they justify it.

You do realize you cannot use the gps WITHOUT a data plan...or subscribing to telnav. :|

Let me know what your price is to buy it from ebay. I'm sure I can beat it., plus be your knight in shining armour.

edit: btw, the prices of retail are based on the licensing costs of being an authorized dealer-who is able to provide warranty, refund and the other various services that the cost premium trickles down to. The $150> purchases you are referring to are NOT BNIB Rogers warranteed units, and if so...tell me where because I'd like to pick up a few myself. They are probably LNIB/MINT no warranty units from south of the border. Factor in shipping+C&D, THEN give me a total cost. $150 while I hope you're correct in saying 'final cost'....is hardly just that.

Of course there's a percentage in the price premium for plain old profit margins :). Undoubtedly hehe. This is a for-profit organization after all ;).
